Look, lets be straight up, earthquakes are no joke, and yes global
warming did in all likelihood play a major role in the quake. How?,
simple, once massive glaciers melt, and their weight is no longer
restraining the Earths crust, the Earths ability to shift (quake) or
the amount of a shift, will be greater than with the restraining
weight of the glacier on the crust. Or are you supposed to keep
chicken pot pie crust on ice, before baking the pie? It's one of the
two. I know it..............I think

Surely it *could* have contributed. The weight of the extra co2 must have
had *some* effect, either it caused the quake to happen earlier or later. I
would presume extra atmospheric weight would make it earlier. In this case
perhaps in the nano-second range!

No.... what it is is the increase of water pressure on the ocean
floors because of the sea level rise that Hairy Dope has been
chattering about. As the ocean is rising, there is increased pressure
of water on the ocean floor over fault zones, This squeezes more water
into the fault cracks which acts like a lubricant, making it easier
for the faults to give way and suddenly move, causing eathquakes.
So yes, man-made Global Warming is the cause.
( I made this up because I'm sure some AGW Alarmist will think of it
as well...... AGW causes everything bad in the world. ;) )

A few years back there was a Kook on this forum who claimed that GW's
cooling of the stratosphere would reduce the Earth's angular momentum,
changing the speed of the Earth's rotation, and, therefore, cause
earthquakes. He hasn't been around lately.

Maybe the removal of oil and natural gas reserves off the coast of the
US has destabilized the crust around Christchurch and the rest of the
ring of fire.
