After spending billions on research, the last billion was spent to build one plant that
doesn't work.

Starting from a prediction of capturing 100% of the carbon from a power company
smokestack, it turned out after billions of dollars of research and construction that it
only removed a net of 4% and at that had to be powered by it's own natural gas plant *and*
the captured CO2 was used to extract more oil from the ground. One could say that clean
coal technology actually creates *more* CO2.

Why is coal dying?

Then the price of oil collapsed and clean coal was abandoned. But wait! Then fracking
came along and began producing enormous amounts of methane which, as a by product of oil
drilling, was a cheap and plentiful alternative to coal.
