Does a citizen of Mauritius with a long term British working visa need
any extra travel documents (e.g. another visa) to visit Gibraltar by
air from the UK for a few days?

Are normal British visas valid for Gibraltar?

Direct your question to tou...@gibraltar.gi who should be able to help -
this is after all a govt. dept.

If you go to
http://www.gibraltar.gov.gi/tourism/general_information.htm you will see
that visitors from Mauritius normally do require a visa, though of course
whether they do in the circumstances you describe is another matter
altogether, arriving in Gib from within the EU. Best be sure.

That page doesn't answer the question at all though. It doesn't say
whether British visas are valid for Gibraltar. It just lists which
countries' nationals require visas for Gibraltar, which is not very
helpful. Where in the UK would one go to apply for a visa for
Gibraltar? It doesn't even say that.

Well to enter Gibraltar, if you are on the list you need a BRITISH
visa, because its a British territory.

If you look at the UK Government notice for visitors they lump
the UK and Gibraltar together because as EU members they
are the same.

Requirments should you wish to reside and work here are of
course different, but as a visitor its exactly the same as the UK.

However, if you are converned, contact the FCO and make
them so some work for a change.

As I was reading the news on the FCO site http://www.fco.gov.uk

I queried it about Mauritius and it said to me:

"You asked if a national of Mauritius would
require a visa to visit the United Kingdom.

YES - based upon the information provided,
prior entry clearance will be required in this
case. The following forms should be
completed to form the application: IM2A -
to be completed by all applicants; IM2E - if
the applicant has been refused entry
clearance or leave to enter the UK before;
IM2F - if additional space is required to
complete form IM2A. The following
information leaflets explain the procedure in
more detail: INF2 - information for visitors;
INF6 - information for sponsors of visitors.

People applying from Mauritius should
make their application to the British
mission in Port Louis . If you have any
further questions, please contact Port
Louis directly."

So if I were you I'd ask them about Gibraltar just to be sure
as although we think we know we are not the experts.

Incidentally I talked to some guys from your country when they started
up the newsgroup alt.mauritius as they had similar problems to us,
wonder how its going.

But the FCO site doesn't mention Gibraltar and whether a current valid
British visa would suffice for entry to Gibraltar from the UK. I sent
an e-mail to tou...@gibraltar.gi and asked them, but they just
referred me to the Royal Gibraltar Police. This is the kind of
information a tourist board should be able to answer, especially since
they publish visa requirements on their web site, but omit to mention
whether existing British visas are valid for Gibraltar. It also
doesn't say where you need to go to apply for a visa for entry to
Gibraltar. The answer is probably "the British Embassy", but what if
one is in London?

Mauritius is not my country. I'm British, but my girlfriend is from
Mauritius. I do read alt.mauritius though, and it does have a lot in
common with alt.gibraltar.
