I plan in the second May week one short vacation to the Costa del Sol and
would like in this week also visit Gibraltar. Now I want to know whether I
may drive a car, rented, in Spain to Gibraltar, or whether it is better, to
leave the car in Spain and to enter Gibraltar as pedestrian, as this is
recommended in numerous travel guides. For tips I am very grateful.

My advice would be to leave your car in an underground car park in
La Linea and walk across. A car is not an advantage as you will
have difficulty parking it, and the roads are very narrow and
congested and obviously unfamiliar to you.

Walk around and if you want to see up the rock, take the taxi 'rock
tour' Theres some relevent info on my website at

Also worth mentioning that Spanish beggars sometimes try and sell
'tickets' to visit Gibraltar to motorists and tourists, have nothing
to do with them, and if they bother you complain to the Spanish
Police.

I would recommend that you walk across having left the car on the Spanish
side as you may find it difficult to drive through Gib's over crowded and
narrow streets. Plus, you may still have to contend with a substantial wait
to get across the frontier by car which you wouldn't if you walked.

Once across take the infamous ROCK Tours on a local taxi or use the public
transport just a few metres from the frontier which takes you to the town
centre for 60p return (no 9 bus) or the no 3 which takes you all the way to
the other end of Gibraltar (Europa Point) - or get off at the Cable car for
a cable car ride to the top of the rock and visit to the apes.

Well I always fly from Paris to Malaga and then rent a car - Spanish
plates - and drive into Gib. Despite all the noise and propaganda if you
leave / arrive early in the morning or late in the evening delays are
minimal and with the new accord likely to be even less of a problem. A car
is in fact very handy in Gibraltar as the taxis are expensive and the
drivers mad / rude for the most part and for sure never there when you want
them. The place may look tiny on the map but in reality walking everywhere
is no fun at all - which is why the Janitos all have cars! A car is also
handy for carrying your tax free shopping. The old town has steep and narrow
streets but parking is no worse than in Paris LOL and easier than in London
as there is no parking Gestapo. You can tell Gib local cars as they are
permanently parked (except for occasional trips to Spain) and plants grow
around the wheels .... most of the peninsula is in fact pretty well
uninhabited and has unforgettable views of the harbour and Africa but it is
impossible to get there without a car or taxi (meter ticking over ...) There
are several car parks in the town and with a bit of patience getting a space
is no worse than other European cities and a darn sight easier than say
Oxford, Bristol or Salisbury ... Around the Main Street tourist area though
a car is no help and can detract one's enjoyment of the various pubs <g>.
There is a dearth of decent restaurants on the Rock - generally the cuisine
is a cross between British pub grub curry take away and the NAAFI but there
are a few that even denizens of Paris enjoy. Hope they remain a secret.

Gibraltarese driving is shall we say enthusiastic by British standards but
does not in any way approach the anarchic and homicidal tendencies prelevant
on the Costas. I have heard that the road from Malaga to Gib has a poor
accident record and that is easy to believe. However don't rent a big car as
it will be too difficult to drive in Gib - a Fiat Punto or Golf is OK.
Theoretically they drive on the right but in practice most of the time there
is only room for one car anyway.

There is a real problem with petty crime on the Spanish side and IMHO
leaving a car over there with valuables on board is not that great an idea.
If you have newish stuff of value such as watches, cameras, notebook
computers carry receipts as Spanish customs can get difficult sometimes.
Also obviously do not carry large amounts of cash. Make sure not to have any
Gib pounds when you leave as they cannot be negotiated outside of the Rock.
UK pounds are accepted everywhere.

For which you will need a spanish accommodation address. If you say Gib
the chances are they will not hire to you.

CAUTION. You will not be insured in your spanish hire car once you cross
the Frontier!

Oh yes there is! The wheel clamps have been gone for a few years now but
ignore the "Cleaning times" notices at your peril. You will be ticketed.

Been a good few years since you last visited, Howard?

Agreed, watch out for suicidal scooters!

> There is a real problem with petty crime on the Spanish side

But a night out in the "Square" in La Linea can still be good fun and very
entertaining, but agreed, not for the faint hearted. Also the best Chinese
Restaurants by far are the two just over the frontier into Spain.

Enjoy your trip and have a pint in the Star Bar for me.

As a non Gib resident I have never been asked for a Spanish accomodation
address when renting a car in Spain. Just credit card and EU driving
licence. Insurance specifically covers Gib. No it is not years since I have
been there I did not say you could not eat well just that the better places
are few in number and - understandably - keep a low profile. Those around
Main Street are mediocre and the pubs just the same as in Liverpool ditto
their grub. I would hardly count a parking ticket as very heavy - a few
minutes over the time limit in London and the risk of a clamp / tow away is
very real. Paris parking is just total anarchy and penalties arbitrary.

I really really wish that you could fly from Gib to say Paris. As it is
flying via London costs the earth and is not much quicker than fly / drive
but maybe safer. I cannot understand how UK Gov permit this state of affairs
to continue esp as BA has pulled Iberia's chestnuts out of the fire. Surely
the obvious thing is just put pressure on via the summer charter flights -
there are lots of ways. Sure the German tourists would be pleased but it is
the mighty £ these days ... a subtle restriction on flights would soon have
the hoteliers yelling. Thompson's? Hasn't the UK air tours industry sold out
to Deutchland anyway?

I'll be vacationing in Gibraltar for a few days in June. Could anyone
please help with answers to the following questions:

I would like to travel by train. How close (Spain or Portugal) does
train service come to Gibraltar?

Could someone give me the name (and ballpark price) of several nice
one or two star hotels in Gibraltar?

Thanks.

John
