My advice would be to leave your car in an underground car park in
La Linea and walk across. A car is not an advantage as you will
have difficulty parking it, and the roads are very narrow and
congested and obviously unfamiliar to you.
Walk around and if you want to see up the rock, take the taxi 'rock
tour' Theres some relevent info on my website at
Also worth mentioning that Spanish beggars sometimes try and sell
'tickets' to visit Gibraltar to motorists and tourists, have nothing
to do with them, and if they bother you complain to the Spanish
Police.

Once across take the infamous ROCK Tours on a local taxi or use the public
transport just a few metres from the frontier which takes you to the town
centre for 60p return (no 9 bus) or the no 3 which takes you all the way to
the other end of Gibraltar (Europa Point) - or get off at the Cable car for
a cable car ride to the top of the rock and visit to the apes.

Gibraltarese driving is shall we say enthusiastic by British standards but
does not in any way approach the anarchic and homicidal tendencies prelevant
on the Costas. I have heard that the road from Malaga to Gib has a poor
accident record and that is easy to believe. However don't rent a big car as
it will be too difficult to drive in Gib - a Fiat Punto or Golf is OK.
Theoretically they drive on the right but in practice most of the time there
is only room for one car anyway.
There is a real problem with petty crime on the Spanish side and IMHO
leaving a car over there with valuables on board is not that great an idea.
If you have newish stuff of value such as watches, cameras, notebook
computers carry receipts as Spanish customs can get difficult sometimes.
Also obviously do not carry large amounts of cash. Make sure not to have any
Gib pounds when you leave as they cannot be negotiated outside of the Rock.
UK pounds are accepted everywhere.

For which you will need a spanish accommodation address. If you say Gib
the chances are they will not hire to you.
CAUTION. You will not be insured in your spanish hire car once you cross
the Frontier!

Oh yes there is! The wheel clamps have been gone for a few years now but
ignore the "Cleaning times" notices at your peril. You will be ticketed.

Been a good few years since you last visited, Howard?

Agreed, watch out for suicidal scooters!

But a night out in the "Square" in La Linea can still be good fun and very
entertaining, but agreed, not for the faint hearted. Also the best Chinese
Restaurants by far are the two just over the frontier into Spain.
Enjoy your trip and have a pint in the Star Bar for me.

I really really wish that you could fly from Gib to say Paris. As it is
flying via London costs the earth and is not much quicker than fly / drive
but maybe safer. I cannot understand how UK Gov permit this state of affairs
to continue esp as BA has pulled Iberia's chestnuts out of the fire. Surely
the obvious thing is just put pressure on via the summer charter flights -
there are lots of ways. Sure the German tourists would be pleased but it is
the mighty £ these days ... a subtle restriction on flights would soon have
the hoteliers yelling. Thompson's? Hasn't the UK air tours industry sold out
to Deutchland anyway?

I would like to travel by train. How close (Spain or Portugal) does
train service come to Gibraltar?
Could someone give me the name (and ballpark price) of several nice
one or two star hotels in Gibraltar?
Thanks.
