From ABC 3/2/06 I read:

"A warship of the British Navy with 80 cannons was apparently
transporting, 10 tons of gold and 100 of silver to bribe the Duke
of Savoy to break an agreement with the French in the War of the
Great Alliance (1689-1997), conflict that involved England, the Holy
Germanic Empire, the United Provinces and Spain with the Gallic
monarch Luis XIV."

Surely there must be some mistake ...

Well it could well be this pre-Sp-War-of-Succession that might (IMHO) at
last galvanise the UK into action re Gib's waters. At the moment Gib's
waters extend to a 3m limit, whereas it is within rights to claim 12m
(nautical, that is).

The wreck of the +supposed+ Suffolk is currently in international water
(outside 3m from Gib) but would be within 12m from Gib's shore.

While Sp's objections over Gib have largely been hurting no-one but Gib,
they have barely ever provoked anything but a feeble response from the UK.
Now that Sp objects to this exploration she would not be hurting Gib at all,
but might severly hurt the UK, and where it hurts the UK most - in the
wallet, for the UK stands to gain substantial treasure from this find.
Therefore the reaction from the UK could be bigger than anything Sp has ever
previously encountered. It is a long long time since Sp ever had to contend
with the full might of a swipe from any nation of any size, let alone the
comparative might of the UK compared to Sp's puny punch.

Mind you the price of gold will increase with the uncertainty in the
middle east, and Gordon Brown sold off the UK gold reserves cheap
so this one is going to be good.

Has Sp claimed its gold reserves back from the Soviet Republics yet? I mean,
they sent it there under duress after all!
