It's one of Gibraltar's special industries, we are one of the world
leaders in the supply of specially configured vechicles for the UN
(United Nations) and other agencies and NGOs (Non governmental
oranisations), Oxfam, etc.
The two main gibraltar companies are:
Capurro Overseas Project Sales
www.cops.gi
and
Toyota Gibraltar Stock Holdings
www.toyota-gib.com
The vechicle are configured either as tough landrovers (with rasied
exhausts for going through rivers etc), or they are converted into
anything from ambulances to portable cinemas (for public information
films in the middle of nowhere).
You quite often see them being driven (sometimes already with UN or
other aid agency markings) to the border with termpoary licence plates,
from they they might take the ferry from Algeciras to morocco. The
might also be loaded on to a ship. In responce to the tsunami, I recall
reading in the cronicle about how the local drivers volunteered to
drive them to germany immediatly, so they could make an early airlift.
It really is a niche market, and thouse white jeeps you see in gib do
end up in some far flung places around the world.
