These days the computers know all about it and do things automatically
and the cycle of daylight has changed over the last few weeks so our
bodies perhaps expect it. I find I'm getting up half an hour earlier
in anticipation this week.
So next week it will be summertime or UTC+2 in Gibraltar, CEST la Vie.
Otherwise the news is that the first round of the trilateral process
talks (Cordoba/2) will be held in Gibraltar. In the past Spanish
Officials were hesitant at coming to the Rock for talks, but now they
can fly in on Iberia and their mobile telephones work its been built
so they will come. The worst think they have to fear is friendly hugs
from the Chief Minister or maybe its the Prime Minister.
The secret location is ... known to the VOGG who may be around quietly
monitoring and cheering. No sovereignty talks please, we ARE British.
Attempts to organise a protest about the event by 'the usual suspects'
seem to have fallen on deaf ears, although locally its surprising that
nobody wants to protest about the sun rising or the change in sea
levels due to the tide.
The talks are said to include 'the environment' where some complain
that Gibraltar makes money from Bunkering, and its a dirty dangerous
business that threatens the Bay of Whatever and should all be done
by the Port of Algeciras - which has a worse record on accidents.
Verdemar complain that Gibraltar is a dangerous polluter of the
entire area, but turn a blind eye to the refinery and chemical
plant in San Roque.
But whatever is on the agenda talks are generally better than throwing
rocks and unlike North Korea, we have no nuclear reactors to bargain
with, except those of visiting submarines. In the news last week,
however was our old friend HMS Tiresome, which had a small onboard
explosion requiring emergency surfacing and the loss of two lives.
There is industrial unrest in the ship repair yard, where Cammel Laird
(who went bust in the UK some time ago) refuse to talk to the unions
and are reported to be emplyoying casual labour from Rumania resident
in Spain. In an advertisment in the 'Chronicle' to explain their
position they said they only employ 16 Gibraltarians. Looking at the
large area occupied one wonders if better use could be made of the
area - because their present working practices cause large amounts of
airbourne contamination when they paint ships there.
Otherwise the Opposition critisise Government and the Government
critisise the opposition and the other parties say everyone has it
wrong. The new housing developments go up and 'fly Gibraltar'
seems to emulate the Dodo.
VOX is still in print, and weekly denounces Caruana as the antichrist
and reports all his projects are doomed, whether its true is another
matter.
The New People now have an online edition and there is yet another
online local 'NewsPortal' launched which looks snazzy but has no
content. Google knows all.
But next week its Easter and soon there will be summer hours when
you can't do anything involving Government offices in the afternoon
and peoples thoughts turn to the beach and their summer holiday.
One of these mornings
Youre bound to rise up singing
Then youll spread your wings
And take to the sky
But til that morning
Nothings going to harm you no
With daddy and mama standing by
Things on the Rock of Gibraltar are much as one might expect, solid
steady and quite boring. More of the same !

Was the namer of HMS Tiresome a reader of Iain M. Banks books about the
Cultute and its naming of vessels? :)

Certainly not red and orange.
THAT was never an option. No, just red and white. Oh and a little black for
the outline of the bricks in the castle, and perhaps a bit of gold for the
braid holding the key, though some prefer it black. Though this might be
historically correct, the whole thing stands out better with a bit of gold
braid though.

see ! told you !!!!
Not like Glasgow where it all happens ...
"HOSPITAL bosses have come under fire after hiring "smoke police" to
enforce a total fag ban."
I would have said its discrimination on the grounds of sexual
orientation, but its actually on the grounds of Glasgow's Princess
Royal Maternity Hospital.
I blame my old dear for smoking when she had me ..81 and still
smoking...very bad for your health .......
Then you should have given your duty free allowance to
your poor old mother not try and sell it.
How did your venture as a tobacconist go?
PS: Regret unable to send a speedboat to replenish
your stocks at this time.
