Hurrah!

What though is tyhis I read that the Sp want to use Gib airport as if it
were "any airport in Spain"? The news for them is, Gib airport is NOT in
Spain. How about they fly to Gib (and with open arms I would add) as they
would any airport anywhere else OTHER THAN in Spain - 'cos that's exactly
where Gib airport is.

Absolutely nothing whatsoever, other than they are both happening in Gib and
require new builds. At least I was on-group, if off-topic - but since when
has that become unusual on Usenet?

So, what views on that carried by Panorama re Sp intentions around the
airport use?

Well that's my reaction - but the appeasing plonkers on the FCO will
probabaly think it's a good idea to let them have what they want, given the
history of their dealings with Spain as regards Gib.

Have you heard the latest re. a ship trying to enter Spain? From today's
Panorama;
----------------------------------------------
Spain refuses to recognise Gibraltar flag
The Spanish government has refused to recognise the Gibraltar flag flown on
an oil tanker. The tanker had been chartered by the US Navy, but the Spanish
authorities denied it access to Rota. This matter has come to light
following a report circulated on Monday by PrensaLatina.org website, which
claims that the ship was turned back last February.

The chartered tanker is the 'Aegean Tulip' and was navigating under the
Gibraltar flag and not the flag of the USA which, said the report, violates
Spanish regulations about not allow ships which call at Gibraltar to
continue to a Spanish port.Much less can a Gibraltar-flagged ship be allowed
into a Spanish military base, it is reported.

MOD ARGUMENT
Such an argument would be extraordinary, said Gibraltar sources, given that
the MOD has said that Spanish companies etc cannot be stopped from gaining
access to military services in Gibraltar, yet the Spanish can impede that
Gibraltar ships call at a Spanish military port!

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Aegean Bunkering told GBC yesterday that the
company owned the oil tanker in question and that, on a first trip on 20
January, all the relevant documentation was accepted and clearance given by
the Cadiz port authorities. However, with the ship already anchored nearby,
diplomatic clearance was denied at the last minute by the military
authorities in Rota. The Aegean spokesman also pointed out that since Spain
relaxed its maritime ban last year, its vessels have sailed to Spanish ports
without problem.

NOT GRANTED
Aegean Bunkering has taken up the issue with the maritime administrator
locally who, in turn, has referred it to the Foreign Office, said the GBC
report. A second projected trip to Rota in March was not proceeded with
because diplomatic clearance was again not granted. The company says no
official reason was given.

---------------------------------------------------

What I find REALLY curious is that the Gib flag is really a rectangular
border around the arms of the City of Gibraltar as granted by a Spanish
queen (Isabella) in 1501/2. This queen is held in very high regard by the Sp
today, and it is HER symbol to Gib at a time when it was under Sp rule that
they are refusing to recognise!!

All this of course at a time of "co-operation" by Spain in matters regarding
Gib. Of course Gibraltarians have long understood that the Spanish of
co-operation is a process by which Spain gets all she wants, no questions
asked.

You are mistaken. Behind my vehement words lies an unflappable persona whose
skin is so thick (almost pachyderm-like) I am frankly quite imperceptive.

You mistake unequivocal statements with upset.
