Taking a lead of DC's previous posting on Callejon del Perejil, which I was
not aware of. Here is another interesting street name for those with an
interest in names of a bygone era. So, who knows where 'La Calle Vicario' is
situated in Gib?

That is one of those I don't need to look up as a great aunt of mine lived
there. To give it its full unofficial name, Calle Vicario el Viejo. George's
Lane.

Tito comes up to his usual standard to remind us that the unofficial name
comes from the vicarage of the priest to the church of St Mary the Crowned
(later Cathedral of the same name) which was situated there. According to
Msgr (now Bishop) Caruana the name dates from the Great Siege of 1790, and
in particualr to Fr. Messa who lived there. His successor lived elsewhere,
and nowadays the clergy based at the Cathedral live on-site.

From whence itderives te name George's Lane is unclear. It is supposed - but
there is no evidence - that it was named after Prince George of Hesse who
commanded the Dutch forces who with the Marines took Gib in 1704. Apparently
he took up residence there.

Not all the clergy live on-site. The Bishop lives in Bishop's House and I
believe one or two live in an ex-MOD property behind in Cannon Lane.

And here's a bit of interesting stuff. Some may or may not recall Fr
Montegriffo? He died many years ago. He had a special and rather unique
status. He lived with his family in a flat in Main Street opposite the
'Hammer'. From what I recall being told, his priestly studies had been paid
for by his family and so he was not subject to the usual rules and
disciplines. I've been trying to recall the 'technical' term for this, but
it will not come to my mind.

I'm sure the 'canon lawyer' in our group will enlighten us in a flash!

I'm no 'canon lawyer', if anything a 'loose canon' Jim agrees with me. I
thought a priest would belong to an Order, consequently he would be bound by
the Order's edict. You might be able to enlighten me on this one.

I see, so it must be a matter of choice, then. I have, however, deduced from
discussions with our friends of the cloth, that they do seem to have a
preference for this or that Order. Only natural, I'd say. I am still at a
loss for the word you are searching for with regards to seminary studies.
