The subject of the old hospital brings up a thought. Castle Street, which is
a curious name for a place which has no road at all, is just steps. Also
known as "Comedy Street" in direct translation, equally inappropriate.

For those who might not immediately recognise the location, the bottom of
the steps are directly across the road from the top of Bell Lane, whose
bottom is almost directly opposite the post office on Main St. If you go up
these steps, at what looks like the top when you were at the bottom (!?),
you are at a junction. If you go right, you find yourself by the old St
Bernard's Hospital.

Since the traffic reorganisation along Engineer Lane and Governor's Parade
some years ago, there is nowhere as much traffic in this area as there was
before. Certainly while the old St Bernard's Hospital was in use, a case
could have been made for turning these steps into a one-way road (which
direction doesn't matter) which would have improved ambulance access to te
hospital.

Is anyone of the opinion that these steps should be turned into a road, or
should they, heritage-style, be preserved in aspic as they are?
