When I gave each and every mortal soul a name, and whispered into each
ear how to name their prodigy thereafter, the list of names became so
long and cumbersome that I allowed the list to be abbreviated with
contractioned spellings. Among these contractioned spellings, I
permitted the name of Jonathon to be abbreviated, pet-shortened,
mis-pronounced, misspelled, or otherwise generally mangled by
ever-blockheaded illiterate whom I created from day one. Jonathon was
the one and only original I sanctioned from day one. John is merely
a corruption short name itself .. but, I permitted it. You see, John
with that funny 'h' in it was put there by my servant King James' crew
who assembled the letters and writings of my laws just a few days ago
.... er, well .. you probably would think in terms of 13th century after
death of my Son. Anyhoo ... Jno. is the proper abbreviation for
Jonathon, as is John, as is Jon, as is Juan, as is Ian, as is Ivan, as
is .... oh, well, you get the drift.

Can you now drop the subject since you have your Master's word now?

In article <31CBE2...@lex.infi.net> Edward C. Shaw,
-----------------------------------------------------------
"John" and "Jonathan" are two separate and distinct Biblical Hebrew
names. They are NOT variations of one another. John is the English
spelling of "Johanan" meaning "Jehovah is gracious." Jonathan means
"whom Jehovah gave" ("nathan" means gift).

And, oh, by the way, "Jno." is (correctly) the abbreviation for
John (but, of course, people are free to use or abuse the English
language as they see fit). The real question for this news group
when you see the abbreviation "Jno" is, "what was the person's real
name?" The answer is probably "John." Of course, if someone named
Jonathan was called "Jon", the record keeper may have abbreviated
that "Jno."
