I do genealogy research and use a genealogy program that allows me to
build "Timelines", a timeline is an historical events in hronological
order. Timelines can also help one plan their research. For instance,
a timeline of the formation of counties in the state where a person
lived can suggest where one should look for census records. Timeline
can focus on art, music, literature, transportation, inventions,
clothing styles, wars, politics, famous people, religion, etc.

I am trying to build a timeline for all the states in the USA which
had state censuses and federal censuses. I need the date the census
was formed, the date it was to start and the date it was to be
completed by.

This timeline will enable a researcher to understand why his great
grandparents were not listed on a census for a particular due to the
dates of the census undertaking. For instance, the great
grandparents might not have arrived in the area in time to be a part
of the census, might have moved from the area before the census was
taken.

Here is an example of the Federal Census I have been working on:

carried out.

03 Mar 1839 Congress approved the Federal Census to be
carried out.

01 Dec 1840 Federal Census count ended on this date for
the censuses of 1840.
23 May 1850 Congress approved the Federal Census to be
carried out. Congress also set the start
date for the 1870 and the 1880 Federal
Census on this date.
01 Jun 1850 Federal Census count started this day. The
number of counties and other state
subdivisions reported was 1,623.
01 Dec 1850 Federal Census count ended on this date for
the censuses of 1850.
01 Jun 1860 Federal Census count started this day. The
number of counties and other state
subdivisions reported was 2,080. The count
for this census includes 1 each for
Colorado and South Dakota (Dakota
Territory), which were reported as single
units in this census rather than by
counties.
01 Jun 1870 Federal Census count started this day. The
number of counties and other state
subdivisions reported was 2,295.
03 Mar 1879 Congress approved the Federal Census to be
carried out.
01 Jun 1880 Federal Census count started this day. The

subdivisions reported was 2,570.

damaged by fire on 10 Jan., 1921,
practically all schedules not the destroyed
