Hello all,
This is my first post to the group, but I've been following the last
couple hundred messages or so. I am trying to find information on a Henry
Hoskins in County Cork, Ireland, in about 1591. We have the town/village as
Aghadown, but I seem to be unable to find it with that spelling... the
closest I can find is Aughadown... The information I have is some that I
"inherited" from my father and my aunt, it was done twenty years or so ago.
I am relatively new to this Internet genealogy, but have checked out a
number of links mentioned previously in this group for Cork. The
information I have says that William Hoskins (to whom I can trace relatively
reliably...) is the son of Henry Hoskins, Gent., and Anne Winthrop both of
Ireland. He was probably born about 1614, Co. Cork, Ireland. The
Winthrops are pretty well documented. I have seen numerous indications that
Henry Hoskins was born in "Aghadown" about 1591, but I have also seen
indications that he was born about 1590 in Hancock, England... I had always
thought that "Hoskins" seemed more an English name than an Irish name, but I
really know nothing of it's origin. Could someone please give me a little
information about Hancock, England - where it is, size, perhaps churches
there at that time, or steer me to some place where I could find this? I
have been unsuccessful to this point in finding much information online,
perhaps it is that I lack the patience to try more than five or six
times/approaches for a given site...??? I can often find many
lists/descriptions of what is offered at any given site, just can't find the
information!!! The information I do have was supposedly taken from the list
of sources following, but, again, I have been unable to verify it... Also,
for me, traveling (as to Ireland) is out of the question, so I have been
attempting to find information on the Internet.
Thanks in advance for any information! I have very much enjoyed the
informative discussions that I found in the previous messages! I hope to
check out more of the links when I have the time. I apologize if you see
this message elsewhere, but I am posting to a couple of other groups, as
well.

Hi Mike
There is no place called Hancock now in the UK.
There are several streets called Hancock but no towns or villages.
Please let me know if I can be of help in providing names or addresses or
geographical information about current UK residents.

Hi Mike,

Aghadown (spelt as this) is in County Cork, in the Civil Parish of
Aghadown, Barony of West Carbery, Poor Law Union (nearest Work House) of
Skibberean.

The Village is on the road between Skibberean and Ballydehob, near
Hollyhill, at the head of one of the inlets to Roaringwater Bay

You might think of subscribing to the Shamrock Mailing List or the
Soc.Gene Ireland News Group.

There is also a county Cork Mailing List.

Best wishes,
