Dear Group,

I am trying to get information on the above family (ancestors) who
migrated from Scotland to Livonia.

I have Andrew Barcley de Tolly (1578-1636) whose son Peter Barclay de
Tolli arrived in Rostock, Livonia in 1621. He founded a military dynasty
and I suspect one of the family was General M. B. Barclay de Tolly who was
a central figure in the Battle of Borodino in 1812 against Napolčon.

Any help gratefully received!

In Scotland the family name was simply Barclay (rather than Barclay de
Tolly) and the estate name was Towie (now Towie-Barclay to distinguish
it from several other Aberdeenshire Towies). The castle still exists
about 4 miles south of Turriff. I'm not directly interested in the
Barclays of Towie except as neighbours of the Dempsters of
Auchterless, so this genealogy is a little scrappy as its based on
material gathered for other purposes which just happens to mention the
Barclays.

The early part is largely based on a list of the owners of Towie
Barclay reported to the Banff Field Club in 1887 and quoted in
Temple's Thanage of Fermartyn. I would not vouch for it 100%,
particularly in the earlier stages but it may be a useful start. It
would be worth looking to see if Andrew can be shown to be one of the
younger sons of Walter & Elizabeth Hay, or a son of one of those
younger sons.

Walter Barclay fl 1165

Sir Walter Barclay fl 1210

Patrick Barclay fl 1296

Sir Walter Barclay fl 1305x29, Sheriff of Banff 1305

Hugh Barclay of Gask fl 1323

William Barclay of Towie fl 1388

Walter Barclay of Towie fl 1457

John Barclay of Towie fl 1480

Patrick Barclay of Towie = Janet Ogilvy

Walter Barclay of Towie fl 1490x1512, he had ward of the lands of the
late Walter Dempster of Auchterless in 1506. Walter Dempster was
married to an Elizabeth Barclay (possibly Walter B's sister) and
Walter D's heir was a minor - probably born c 1500.

One Missing generation (at least)

Walter Barclay of Towie = Elizabeth Hay (possibly of Delgaty). He was
killed in 1589 by Meldrum of Moncoffer at Edinburgh and was- succeeded
by his eldest son (of 4, plus 2 daughters)

Sir Patrick Barclay of Towie - served heir to Towie 6th March 1587 =
Hon. Anne Drummond, daughter of Lord Drummond. He died 1624 and his
tomb remains in the ruins of Old St Congan's Church, Turriff. He was
succeded by his (?) grandson. In 1620 there is a Patrick Barclay,
younger of Towie named as son and heir of Sir Patrick, and in 1633
William Barclay, tutor of Towie is mentioned. The fact that there was
a tutor in 1633 suggests that the heir was not of age - tutor is the
Scots term of the time for a guardian. Sir Patrick was succeeded by .

Walter Barclay of Towie, Comissioner to the General Assembly 1638,
fought at the "Trot of Turriff" 1639 = Hon. Jane Elphinstone, daughter
of 3rd Lord Elphinstone. He died 1643 leaving issue Patrick, Eliza and
Ann and was succeeded by his son

Patrick Barclay of Towie, served heir to Towie 1643, died 1668,
succeeded by his son

Walter Barclay of Towie dsp before 1684 = Elizabeth Fraser , succeeded
by his sister

Elizabeth Barclay of Towie d before 1702 = John Gordon of Rothiemay
(who assumed the name Barclay). Succeeded by her son

Patrick Gordon-Barclay of Rothiemay & Towie, mentally deficient,
estate passed to his sister 1711

Elizabeth Barclay of Towie ?died before 1713? = Sir Alexander Innes of
Coxton 1st Bt (who took the surname Barclay). He inherited the estate
from his first wife and it was inherited by his younger daughter by
his second marriage. She and her husband, Hon. Charles
Maitland-Barclay sold Towie in 1753
