I need to know if this is a Jewish surname. The family claims it is not?
I am having difficulty researching this line from Minnesota. If they are
jewish then I am doing all my looking in the wrong places!

Goldberg is typically a Jewish name, but anywhere along the line there could
have been intermarriage and the family is now not Jewish. There's no name
that is absolutely, positively Jewish and not possibly anything else.

There are two groups of Jewish people the Ashkenazi which came from
Europe places like Germany, and the second group were the Sephardi which
came from Spain and Portugual (spelling not good sorry). I am doing a
study on the Jewish people of the East End of London and would be
certain to say that "Goldberg" came from the first mentioned. If you
want more details e-mail me. Unless someone out there knows different!

There are Jewish Goldbergs and there are German Goldbergs.
Some may, for political/social reasons not admit being Jewish.
I have personally known several Jewish Goldbergs.

Alternatively, there are a lot of ---bergs in Sweden...have known a
number of them, some of whom have lived in predominantly Jewish towns and
have dealt with a great deal of confusion, including getting targeted
for a lot of Jewish oriented mailing lists...
(you can just hear the direct mail people's minds...ends in berg, lives
in Skokie, IL...GOTTA be Jewish!)

Goldberg is a German name meaning gold hill. Many Jewish families took
this name in the 18th century, when thery were alowed to buy names. Early
on in Germany, Jews were not alowed to have surnames. Many other names
like Rosen (Roses) Kesselberg (copper hill) and so on were common in all
the relgious groups of Germany. So, your Goldbergs might have been
protestants or Catholics. The exclusively "Jewish" names in Germany are
few. One example is Shapiro. Good Luck!

Goldberg was also a name used in Hallingdal, Norway. There was a Bjørn
Goldberg who was probably born ca. late 1400's. His son was Bjørn
Bjørnson Olsgard who died about 1624.
