Once removed means a generation removed. You and a first cousin share
grandparents, and one parent each are siblings. Your children and your
1st cousin's children are 2nd cousins, sharing great-grandparents. But
you are 1st cousin-once-removed to your 1st cousin's children. Parallel
lines are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, whatever, sharing a generation (regardless of
age), drop down a line or lines, and you get once, twice, three, etc
times removed. I have 1st cousins who are old enough to be my parents,
but I still share a generation with them. They mother was the oldest of
6, my mother was the youngest, putting a large age gap in the 1st
cousins. Hope this makes sense.
It means that the two individuals are of unequal generations. First
cousins are the same generation and hence equal. The relationship of
one cousin to the children of the second individual would be a "removal"
of one generation, hence, once-removed; to the grandchildren of that
same second individual would be another "removal" of two-generations, or
twice-removed for that same first individual. :) Clear as mud? Hope
it helps.

If your Mother or Father has a first cousin thier relationship to you is
first cousin once removed. Their childrens relationship to you is second
cousin.
