Would like to trace President Ulysses S. Grant's descendants down to
Lorenzo Grant. Began with Matthew Grant in May 1635, landed in the town of
Dorchester, MA (from Scotland) and moved from there to what is now
Windsor, CT. His oldest son was Samuel Grant. In 5th generation from
Matthew Grant - Noah Grant and Solomon Grant. The latter 2 were officers
in the English army and in 1756 in the war against the French both were
killed, leaving families. General Grant's grandfather at that time, also
named Noah Grant was 9 years old. Later, he served in the Revolutionary
War, in the American Continental Army. He married during the war and had
2 children. At the close of the war, his wife died. He then moved to
Westmorland Co., PA. By his 1st wife he had 2 sons, the oldest named
Solomon; the youngest named Peter Grant. Then Capt. Noah Grant married his
2nd wife, a Miss Kelly, and in 1799 emigrated to Ohio and settled where
the town of Deerfield now stands. By 2nd wife he had 3 children, the
oldest named Jesse R. Grant, who was the father of U.S. Grant. After, came
Simpson Grant and Datus Grant. General Grant's grandfather was also the
grandfather of Orlin Grant, my great grandfather. His name was Noah
Grant. Orlin Grant, Martin Grant, Palmer Gran, Levi Grant, Quincey
Grant, Ratie Grant, Asher Grant, Convers Grant; also 3 daughters: Electy
Grant married a man named Cooley. Permela Grant married a man named miner.
The other married a man named Keys or Franklin or both, as near as my
grandfather can recollect and he says this may not be correct as he was so
young. He could not find the names of all the cousins' children or how
many they all had? His father spoke often of Solomon, Peter and Datus
Grant and Noah Grant (more than one Noah in family). His grandfather
married a Miss Lowell (her brother was Calton Lowell), then moved to town
of Brownville inGenesee County, N.Y. where Orlin Grant was bornin 1808.
He then moved to Westmorland County, PA, near the town of Greensburg, and
from there moved to Erie County, PA, and from there to Cass County, MI.
Orlin Grant married both of his wives in Cass County, MI. From there he
moved to Berrien County, MI, 3 miles west of the city of Niles. From
there he moved to Antelope County, Nebraska where he died on l/29/l889.
Orlin's father married a Miss Jackson and had 4 children by her. Then
married his mother who had 6 children. Orlin's son was Lorenzo Grant (my
grandfather). Orlin also had by 1st wife, Hester Ann Grant born
4/12/1842, Mason Township, Cass County, MI;
Clarinda Grant, born ll/3/183, Milton Township, Cass Co. MI - died in
Monterey Co, CA 6/17/1908. Also Lewis Gran born l/9/1846, Mason Township,
Cass Co., MI;
Ellen Mariah Grant, born 4/16/1848, Mason Township, Cass Co., MI. His 2nd
wife's children: Lorenzo C. Grant, born 7/25/1850, Mason Township, Cass
Co., MI;
Cyrus Grant, born 12/11/1852, Cass Co., MI - died ll-28/1902, Elgin,
Nebraska;
Freeman Oliver Grant, born 10/2/1854, Mason Township, Cass Co., MI; Alfred
Z. Grant, born 12/6/1856, Niles Township, Berrien Co., MI; Jesse U. Grant,
born 11/2/1859, Niles Township, Berrien Co., MI; Lydia A. Grant, born
8/23/1863, Niles Township, Berrien Co., MI. Just need to know if Lorenzo
C. Grant is really a descendant of Ulysses S. Grant????? Or, can you
tell me where to inquire?
Thank you very much. LeB...@juno.com
