Hi Lori,
When you say PAF import does this mean that FTW 5.0 will import directly,
such as a back-up, from PAF 3.0m instead of requiring a Gedcom?

Thanks for your help.

But, just as version 4.x can save a file in the version 3 format, version 5
can save a file in the version 3 or version 4 format.

For the past few versions, Family Tree Maker was able to directly import a
PAF 2.1-2.31 file. Now, in version 5, we can also directly import a PAF
version 3 file without going through GEDCOM.

I hope this helps.

My order of FTM v 4.40 arrived in the mail three days ago.
Why cannot I contact online w/o making a toll call to the company re the
upgrade? I ordered the v4.40 online.

It should be possible to verify and download the updated version.
Thanks for your consideration!

What if you would want to give someone else your file or part of your file
and they didn't have the FTM 5.0 Version? A lot of what makes researching
genealogy exciting and worthwhile is the ability to share with others and
others being able to share what they know with you. For *.ftw files saved in
5.0 to only be opened in 5.0 would make those files accessible to ONLY those
who have 5.0. There goes the sharing.

Most upgrade software has the ability to save "down"; That is, the
version 5.0 should have the feature to "save as..." and let you choose
which format to save it in, thus enabling you to share with users who do
not have the upgrade.

Version 4.4 has this under the "Copy/Export" option.

My newsserver misses some messages, so I
may have missed something here, but
up until now, FTW has always included the
option of exporting an FTM file in formats
for either FTM 3.X or 4.X in addition to the
standard gedcom option. Also for gedcom
you can choose either 4 or 5.5 gedcom standard,
depending on the age of your recipient's program.
I would assume FTM 5 would have these same
options? Some formatting is always lost when
data is moved from one program to another, but
I have never had trouble using 4.4 to make files
for people still using FTM 3.X.

Paul,
You mean that this is just for saving, don't you? You can still save to a
GEDCOM file which can be exchanged with other programs, can't you?

Correct. We don't remove features. The change we made in version 5 to this
is that now you can chose to save a copy of a file as either version 3 or 4
in addition to GEDCOM.

Cynthia,

Don't jump to conclusions. Family Tree Maker version 5 has a number of ways
to allow the sharing of data. For those using version 5, a person can simply
send them a copy of their file (or the pertinent part thereof). If the other
person has version 3.x or version 4.x of Family Tree Maker, version 5 has
the ability to save a file in either of those format. And, if the other
person does not use Family Tree Maker but different genealogy program,
Family Tree Maker allows the export of information as a GEDCOM file using
either the version 4 or version 5.5 standards.
