I am having difficulty in finding record of my great-grandfather's arrival
at Ellis Island despite the fact that I know he came over in 1903/1904 via a
ship used, chartered or whatever by F. Missler of Bremen.

My grandfather Alois Ajdnik was Slovenian, and the latest twist in this
whole search was my great aunt; one of Alois' daughters, telling me "oh by
the way, I think he defected from the Austro-Hungarian army and may have
come over using a friend's name. . ."; something like "John Rezin".

Well, needless to say, I can't find record of any name like this either in
ellisisland.org database. Now my idea is to try to search the passenger
lists for the ships that came over from F. Missler of Bremen.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Have you tried using Steve Morse's site? It allows you to enter only the first
initial of the surname plus whatever you know about the date, age, port,
ethnicity, etc. all on one shot. You might pop him up with some outlandish
spelling. (And if not under "A", try "O" or any other letter that could be
mistaken by the transcribers). Be patient. It doesn't always load, probably
due to volumn at some hours.

The site is: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html

Thanks for the tip on Steve Morse's site. It is very powerful & helpful.
Alas, even with this I am still comming up empty-handed. I am also lookin
at a site cimorelli.com which lists all the ships comming to the US and
their ports of departure & port of entry & arrival date. I've not come up
with much yet, but I am gathering data. I think this may be tough.

Regarding the search for naturalization records, how would I go about this?
I do have a copy of a document which purports to be a "Certificate of
Naturalization" for the US for Alois, his wife & family. It has a number,
and is dated 12/3/1914 & signed by a clerk of the district court of Crawford
county KS on behalf of the Dept. of Labor. I don't know what this might be
useful for cross-referencing to.

Do you have any ideas/suggestions?
