Hi,
What exactly does it mean when one is let's say "first cousin once
removed, second cousin once removed"?
How does that differ say from second cousin?
I've always wanted to know the exact meaning of this.

Thanks,
Scott

The "removed" means you and that person are in different generations
from your common ancestor(s).

You and your first cousin have the same grandparents. Your first
cousin's child is your "first cousin, once removed," 1 generation
removed from you. Your grandparents are this child's great-grandparents.

Your first cousin's child and your child are second cousins. These two
have the same great-grandparents, different grandparents.

Your first cousin's grandchild is your "first cousin, twice removed," 2
generations removed from you. Your grandparents are this child's
great-great-grandparents.

Your first cousin's grandchild and your grandchild are third cousins.
They have the same great-great-grandparents, different
great-grandparents, different grandparents.

And so on
