Does anyone have any info on where the name Curtis originated. Do you
know of any sites that I can go to where I can search the history of
this name.
Thanks

According to the Encyclopedia of American Family Names...Robb and
Chesler, published 1995 by Harper etc.
Curtis is ranked 250 in most popular surnames. the Origin: English
1. derived from the Old French word "curteis" and the Middle English
word "co(u)rtois" both meaning refined...given to people considered
refined. 2. derived from the Middle English words "curt" and "hose"
meaning short and leggings...again, given to short people or people who
wore short stockings..
Most surnames are that way...descriptive, son of..., occupation,
location,... Because is some countries first names were limited to less
then 30 Christian approved names. Or tradition ... Or (very few ors
left)
Check the surname catolog at your local FHC... There are published
Curtis family books.
