Timberlake Colonial Beginnings
The name Timberlake, is an English habitation name for the people from a
lost place in the parish of Bayton, Worcester, so called from OE timber.
Timber, wood and lacu stream, or lake.
(1) Henry Timberleggs(Timberlake)
Sometime between 1635 and 1643 a ship sailed from Hampshire
England, located on the south coast across the channel from France, to
the New World. On board were three people from the parish of Tichfield;
William Sabin, Edmund Littlefield and Henry Timberlake. It’s not known
if the ship made port in Boston or came into Newport R.I.. The earliest
account of Henry Timberlake is from Rhode Island Colony Records. It
reads as follows:
Rhode Island Colony Records

At the general Court of election held at Nuport on the 13th of the
first month, 1644. All were chosen officers againe as they were last
yeare, except Mr. Jeremy Clark, who was chosen Threasurer of Nuport, in
M. Jeoffrey,s stead.
The Military Officers elected for Nuport were Mr. Clark, Capt; Mr.
Smith, Lief ‘t; Geoge Gardiner, Ensign; Toby Knight, Clark; Robert
Stanton and Peter Easton, Sarjants; John Coggeshall, Thomas Gould, James
Baker, Henry Timberleggs, Corporalls; John Hardy, Drummer.

So from this we know Henry was in Newport by 1643. He married a woman
named Mary-------, born in 1621, and on Sept. 10, 1705 she died.
Henry(who came to America) was born in Hampshire, England about 1618.
He also had a brother, Thomas born about 1627. Their parents were Henry
Timberlake, born in 1594 in Chillinge,Tichfield,Hampshire,England, and
Mary or Margaret, born about 1600, same place. They both died in
Hampshire, England.
In 1644, Henry was Corporal, and in 1663 he was Commissioner, in 1668 he
was admitted freeman. It’s unknown when he died but it was before 1680
according to tax records.
Also included in the Colony records is the next statement; On 1-30-1671
Mary Timberlake was allowed fifteen shillings for a horse hired to New
London for Richard Bailey. The purpose of this trip and the identity of
Richard Bailey is unknown to me. In 1680 the record states that the
widow of Henry Timberlake was taxed sixteen shillings. It also states
that on 8-25-1685 administration to widow Mary. Inventory, six pounds,
six shillings, table, six chairs, pewter, warming pan, feather bed, et.
The inventory was settled on widow in consideration of seven years
education of two children since her husband’s departure. And on Feb. 12,
1697, his widow, Mary, sold to her son-in-law, John Coggeshall and her
daughter Elizabeth, One Hundred and Twelve acres of land in Newport for
the price of one shilling. Her estate was valued at ninety-two pounds at
the inventory July 3, 1706. Inventory; 92 pounds, one shilling, three
quid. Widow Mary of Little Compton. Administrator, her son-in-law John
Woodman. Division of seventy-four pounds, thirteen shillings, seven
quid, balance remaining, in the following manner: To children of Henry
Timberlake, a quarter; to Joseph Timberlake, a quarter; to children of
John Timberlake, a quarter and to Hannah, wife of John Woodman, a

Timberlake had four sons and two daughters, viz; William, Henry, Joseph,
John, Elizabeth and Hannah. William hath a daughter now Mrs. Mumford,
who had the greater part of her father’s estate. Henry is dead, left a
son Henry and two daughters. Joseph remains alive. John is dead, left
three daughters, Elizabeth, Mary and Hannah. Elizabeth Coggeshall is
living, hath had of her mother’s estate before the making of the will,

James Timberlake 1st was born in Boston on July 28, 1720. His wife’s
name is not known, nor is his date of death. However she bore him two
sons, James 2nd, born 1775 and Zenus in 1773. Zenus married Pricilla
Soper of Pembroke, Mass. Zenus and Pricilla lived in Raynham, at least
that’s where Zenus died, on Sept. 29, 1800. No record as to how he died
has been found. But three days earlier, his nephew James, died at the
age of two on Sept. 26, 1800 in Raynham. What ever became of Pricilla is
not known, most likely she went back to her family in Pembroke and later
remarried.

James Timberlake 2nd, born in 1755, was a soldier in the Revolutionary
War, and a private in Captain Samuel N. Nelson’s company, Colonel Aaron
Willard’s regiment, marching to Skeenesborough via Charlestown, New
Hampshire, from Boston, 1777. James 2nd, was the only Revolutionary War
soldier of the Timberlake family.
The only record of James in the revolution I’ve found so far reads like
this;
Timberlake, James, Plymouth Private, Capt. Samuel N. Nelson’s Co., Col.
Aaron Willard’s regt.; pay abstract for mileage and travel allowance
from home to Sheensborough, via No. 4 or Charlestown, dated Boston,

believe he died in the American Revolutionary War. In the 1790 census
His wife Lydia and daughter Sarah are listed as the only Timberlakes
living in Plymouth.

(6) James Timberlake 3rd
James Timberlake 3rd, born in Plymouth in 1777. He married Judith Crane
in Raynham Mass. on Sept. 14, 1797. Together they lived in Raynham with
James’ uncle Zenus, and Pricilla Soper, his wife. After the death of his
first child, James Jr., on Sept. 26, 1800 and the death of Zenus three
days later, James 3rd decided to take advantage of his father’s military
pension rights. Which consisted of land grants in Maine. It must have
been a very common practice as many of the local families of the time
moved into Maine. Sometime shortly after 1800, James 3rd and Judith
Crane had settled into Livermore Maine.
Judith Crane was born in Raynham with her twin brother Henry on Aug. 22,
1779. The twins’ parent’s names were Henry and Judith. At this time,
I’ve been unable to tie them to the Crane family of Berkly Mass. but I’m
sure there is a connection.

(8) Clifford Timberlake;
Clifford Timberlake, the son of Silas Timberlake and Sarah Soper, is
listed on two Maine census reports. The 1860 which he is four years old
and the 1870 census in which he is fourteen years old. This gives him a
birthyear of 1856. Nowhere in Maine is there a record of a Charles
Timberlake being born. Also in Maine there is no record of Clifford L.
Timberlake dying. But when we come to Mass. we find many records of
Charles L. Timberlake. It’s my belief that for whatever reason Clifford
started using the name Charles. Sometimes he was Charles Timly, Charles
Timmins, or Charles Timberlane. However, he always listed his parents as
Silas and Sarah.
On his marriage license he also stated that he was born in Swansey,
Mass. It seems to me that he was hiding from something that happened in
Maine, but I guess we’ll never know what.
Charles Timberlake came to the Fall River-New Bedford area about
1875-1879. He married an Irish immigrant by the name of Annie Harrington
in Fall River on Sept. 19, 1880. The marriage service was performed by
Rev. James Masterson of Sacred Heart’s Parish. This is a copy of the
marriage certificate from the diocese of Fall River. Even though they
were married in Fall River, it seems that they lived in New Bedford,
where all of their children were born.

Charles Timberlake died in Fall River on 9-21-1917. Annie, his wife,
was born in Ireland in Jan, 1863, and died in Fall River on 9-9-1920.

Good Morning,

I am continuing the research that my grandfather started over 100 years ago and have found some anomalies within the Timberlake line. I have a death certificate for my 2nd gr grandmother, Rachel(Timberlake) Doble listing her father James and mother, Rachel (Hewett) birthplaces' as Raynham, MA. On your line, it is listed as Maine.

There are a couple of other things also, but I thought I'd just find your source please.

May I ask your source for this very informative posting, please? Thanks, Paul
