My aunt's name was Janette, shortened to Nettie or Netty. Also one of my
great-aunts was Helen, shortened to Nellie

Nellie was certainly used for Nell, which seems to be an alternative
form of Helen. I have several of those in my tree and they seemed to be
used almost interchangably.

Hi, Nellie is probably Eleanor, but Nettie is more of a puzzle. Could
be for Antoinette. I think if I were named Antoinette I'd prefer
Nettie! :-)

My GG-Grandmother was called Nettie. Full name: Sarah Jeanette

My Mo.-In-Law is Nellie, her mother Helen, her Grandmother Nellie.
I understand they used Nellie as an alternate form of Helen. My dau. is
Aileen, an Irish form of Helen.

I used to know someone called Nellie, and it wasn't short for anything.
It was on her birth certificate. Nettie could be a nickname for Janet.

Nettie is conventionally a nickname for Natalie (I.e., if you check a
dictionary of given names. People use nicknames as they choose and
there are all sorts of variants.)

I don't know about Nettie, but my father had an Aunt Nellie and her
given name was Helen. I'm told this was rather common in Scotland.

As someone else has indicated, it's a matter of choice and these nicknames
could mean just about anything. My daughter's name is Jeanette but everyone
calls her Nettie.

Nellie at least in Scotland was often a nickname for Helen. My
great-Aunt Helen spent most of her life as Nell or Nellie.

My grandmother was named Ellen (Irish background); she was called Nellie.
A lot of nicknames come from a baby's attempts to pronounce his/her name,
and so endear them to the parents, and stick.
