Hi I recently started my family tree and have joined a variety of
sites and spent a fair amount of various memberships. I started
documenting everything using the geni.com site and also just started
using the ancestry site as well. Whilst the majority of my information
is on the Geni site I am in 2 minds as to which is better or are there
any which are even better. I find the Geni site very easy and although
just started using the ancestry site this too is quite easy to use. As
I am still 'green' and not the best with computers is there anything
else that anyone can recommend to use both for recording info and
sourcing info. Both my parents were born in the India so the British
India area is the main source for me. My mother's background is
Portuguese and as she has a link to Portuguese nobility her's is
relatively easy to obtain whereas my father's ancestry is proving to
be a challenge so any help I can get is most appreciated.

I believe if you would poll those experienced in doing genealogical
research you would find that most recommend maintaining your principal
database on your personal computer. There are several programs that
will allow you to sync you computer with an online tree. (If you don't
have a personal computer on a thumb drive.) This will give you maximum
control of changes and access to your data.

If you have your information piecemeal in various sites you will loose
track of where you have what information.

Personally I like to have all of my data on my laptop. In this way
wherever I go, and what ever conditions I find, I can always check my data.

In the past I have used my database in many places; from the home of a
distant cousin in the mountains of Kentucky away from any possible
internet connections, to cemeteries in various locations where I need to
check my data to verify the the grave I was looking at was the person I
thought it was.

What determines whether you have maximum control of changes and access
to your data is the quality of the software, not the location of the
data or software.
