I'm specific to Both Surnames in TN and NC and I can only go back to
1825 but that is even unconfirmable. Confirmable goes to 1885 at best.
What's driving me crazy is that you'd think a relatively rare surname
like Bonine would be easy to go in a straight line but it at times is
no more easy than a smith or jonesmy forgiveness if you're searching
those two :-) }
So can some soothe sayer, some Senior Genealologist here help a poor
soul our?
thanks
Sometimes there doesn't seem to be a solution. I have a
G-G-grandfather who just "appeared" out of nowhere.
I have a possible name for his father, but zero documentation for the
connection. Even the possible person seems to have appeared out of
thin air :-(
It was much easier to start a new life in the early 1800's - move 100
miles away and use any name you liked. You were not likely to
encounter anyone who knew you (or even knew of you).
I have to wonder if there were horse thieves or bank robbers in my
past ;-)

I took a genealogy class and one person in the class had a grandfather
who disappeared in the 30's. He was found to have moved a long
distance and raised a second family completely unknown to the first
family.
I have a relative who "disappeared" He erroneously misinterpreted the
"Gros" in "Grosleau" as French for "Big" Started calling himself
"Bigelow" and decades later, no one knows where to look. :-)_
