I am new to usenet, and I generally don't know what I am doing. I think
this is fun. Anyway, thank you all.

Welcome! UseNet is not too difficult to navigate through. It's just that a lot of the old groups based UseNet aren't that active anymore.

Saying that, tell us more about yourself! Since you posted this in a group about coming out of the closet and announcing to the world that you're Gay, can I assume you are, Gay that is? Where are you from? How old are you? Tell us more about yourself!

I agree! Intriguing that his intro is in a group about coming out of the closet and telling the world, "Hey! I'm Gay and proud to be Gay!" I didn't come out of the closet and announce to the world that I was Gay until the summer of 1994, just a few months before my 40th birthday. Trouble was, I should have done it back in the early 70's when I was in my mid-to-late teens!

Anyway, yes Demosthenes, even though your e-mail is labelled "invalid", tell us more about yourself! Your name sounds Greek (No kidding, Captain Obvious!), and is the same as a Greek legend from around 300AD. I envision someone about 6-feet tall, well built but slender, with Valentino-like looks! Yum! Yum!

Valentino-like? Hot!!

What took you so long that you didn't come out until you were almost 40? And who did you come out to? Family? Friends?

I never really came out per se. I didn't gather my family and friends together and make a big announcement that I was Gay. I hid it through high school, or at least tried to. I had two friends who knew about my boyfriend and I, as they were Gay too. I was most thankful for them especially after my boyfriend died in an accident on of all days his 16th birthday. It wasn't all good though as those two friends were unceremoniously murdered just a week before the end of high school. To show how bad it really was, their killers were never brought to justice, as happened quite often back then, and even still happens now, when crimes against Gay people were ignored.

As for me, as I said, I never called everyone together and announced to the world that I was Gay and wasn't going to hide it any more. As it was, once I was free of high school, I just stopped hiding it. I didn't flaunt it, but I didn't hide it either. Did I take risks? I did, but, I took them with friends. We would go to an all-night coffee shop at 1-o'clock in the morning and sit, have a coffee and hold hands. In 1974! We walked down the street holding hands, and even kissed each other. In public! When Gay clubs started to open up, we would go and socialize with other Gay guys in the community. We made friends and established relationships. I had lots of support after I had a life-threatening accident in the summer of 1984, when I was 29-years-old. I was near death for several weeks and took nearly four years to recover. In fact, over those several weeks, I actually did die (technically) several times! To say I was lucky is an understatement!

No, once I was out of school, people just knew I was Gay. Mostly, it was "old news", and not many people really cared. I did find that, for the most part, people I knew who weren't Gay did accept me for my sexuality. And that, I was thankful for.

So please, tell us your coming out story!
