This is totally normal......you can NEVER guarentee what color a koi will
be.....and befor 2 years old...forget it. Koi breeders put them in clay ponds
to age them. They stay there for a year, and when they take them out they are
greeted with the most likely colors. I was at a koi breeders this week...he
has ponds in Tiwan. He told me the koi at his sales ponds get changed out
every few weeks, and put back in clay ponds because the "clean and clear "
water is not good for them.....These are imported fish, and the cost for a 12
inch fish starts at $2000. He invited me back for a "visit" even though he
knew I would never be a for real customer.....a little out of my range. He is
supposed to come over and look at my ponds, and filter system
sometime.....wonder if I have any hidden winners in there.....oh well one can
only wish.....Jerri

I'm no expert on koi,but I do know that my fish in the tank changes
color due to stress.
you may want to check your water chemistry,Ph,Nh3 or it could be that
they just need some air. I have a oscar that is black, when I do clean
up on the tank he will turn light grey, because he is affraid or
stressed.
hope it helps.

Hello Gary. I had a similar occurance in my pond. I have a male yellow
mirror koi. Early this spring about two weeks after coming out of
hibernation he turned almost a white. Now he is a darker yellow than
he was originally.. I also have a showa sanke that came out of the
winter hibernation period with two spots of red on either side of the
tail. Now he has developed more red up around his head. He had black
that intensified and is twice the fish he was last year. The only
thing they both have in common is they are approx. three years old. I
have just recently read about a Japenese saying that that only fools
sell koi before three years old and only fool buys a koi that is
younger than three years old. I guess the answer to all of this is
that the color change is a natural progression in the development of
koi.
