*Hasbro sold the X-COM franchise to Infogrames/Atari. That was pretty
much where we all left off.
*Take Two Interactive has now aquired the license from Atari. Shortly
after they also aquired the only people in the industry familiar with
the X-COM franchise, as well as a talented designer known to long have
been dying for a remake.
*For a time, X-COM was listed on Take Two's legal firm's websites as
an inactive intellectual property. In 2008, it dissappeared, and was
suddenly listed active along with other announced properties such as
Tribes 3, System Shock 2, Bioshock, SWAT, and Freedom Force. It has
since been removed.
*Rumors abound that the attempted EA takeover of Take Two Interactive
also had plans for the franchise
*Interestingly, Boston 2k/Irrational Games (developer of highly
successful Bioshock) is not developing Bioshock 2. That duty has been
bestowed upon a newly started division. Boston 2k wanted to do
something different.
*Bioshock lead designer Ken Levine (Boston 2k/Irrational Games),
currently working on "unannounced title", is known to a humongous
X-COM fan, and describes X-COM UFO as his "first love" and an example
of a game with strong design that stands the test of time. His only
comment so far has been that it would be "the return of a well
remembered game franchise". He has declined to comment on whether or
not they're working on a new X-COM title. (which is kind of suspicious
in itself, since he could have just flat out denied it)
*Boston 2k is currently searching for new team members for a game
based on the Unreal 3 engine (which is very flexible and more than
capable of a squad based tactical scenario).
*The X-COM games were recently patched up and launched on STEAM... by
Take Two! This is something they've done for other games that they
develop sequels for as well.

Gentlemen... cross your fingers and toes... with any luck we may be
looking at a UFO-remake.

Being remade using Civ 4:

Apparently it's quite good. Reviews coming in hover around 85%!

I'm in 2 minds about it - I've not really loved a Civ game since 2 -
the sequels have all lacked something, I'm not sure what.

Soul, perhaps? I agree, I haven't enjoyed them much either, although I
think 4 was better than 3.
