Well, for some reason I got the hankering to pull the X-COM
Collector's Edition CD out and pop it in...and, of course, it's not
working.

My problem is the graphics. The MicroProse logo (in red) is jumbled,
and the game graphics are compressed and elongated (I'm sure someone
will know WTF I'm talking about). I can see enough to click on the
EXIT button to leave the program cleanly, but no way I can play.

Is there a patch or adjustment out there?

Yes. As I recall, you can also turn graphics acceleration off in
dxdiag or whereever.

I've finished both UFO Enemy Unknown and TFTDeep under XP. There are patches
available that I had to download to fix the graphics problem. Basically,
rewritten exe files to run the game and they worked a treat. I'll try and
find them again from my archived backup discs and email them on with
instructions on how to install them.

I tried one of those and it didn't work. What I wound up doing is
running dxdiag.exe and removing the graphics acceleration. Since it
hasn't affected anything else (yet) I'm leaving it off.

The game runs fine now. Thanks for the help!

It may be a good idea to go to http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ and get
the latest copy of DOSbox. It runs the old X-COM games VERY well.
