1> WHAT IS THE COMING ATTRACTIONS FAQ?

Coming Attractions is a clearinghouse for frequently asked questions about
the World of Darkness game setting by White Wolf Games Studio - to be
specific, what they're going to publish next for the World of Darkness. This
includes the games - Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf:The Apocalypse,
Mage:The Ascension, Wraith:The Oblivion, and Changeling:The Dreaming. It
will also track their fiction line, but only the books expressly labeled as
taking place in the World of Darkness. (Not the Elric or Borealis books, for
instance).

Sources of Information: Most of the detailed information comes from Diamond
Previews and the White Wolf Catalog. Additionally, White Wolf hosts a
monthly chat at the Online Gaming Forum on America On-Line (Keyword: OGF)
the first Monday of every month, where we can pester the staff in person.

With the advent of white-wolf.com, White Wolf's Net.Presence is growing.
Many of the staffers have been posting from AOL accounts, including some of
the line developers, and now they're starting to post from white-wolf.com.
The newsgroups they've been posting to are alt.games.whitewolf and
rec.games.frp.storyteller.

This is an attempt to codify the information they have "leaked" to the
net.public, and provide with it a list of solicited products. Do NOT take
anything in this document as fact. At best it is hearsay. I'm going to try
to get at least partial verification for everything on this list, but
remember, a lot of this is long term planning, and White Wolf certainly can
and will change their minds about this.

If you wish to contribute to this FAQ, send email to me, Rick Jones.
(ri...@blkbox.com). And it'd be helpful if you reported a source. Preferably,
the source would be someone at White Wolf, and not just some guy at your
gaming store.

And, if you want to get games directly from White Wolf, you can order
directly at: 1-800-454-WOLF.

Writers and Artists Guidelines are also available by sending a SASE to:
Writers (or Artists) Guidelines

Or you can get them from the White Wolf Web Site.

2> WHAT'S THIS I HEAR ABOUT A WHITE WOLF TV SHOW?

The Official Kindred:The Embraced Web-Page is - http://www.kindredemb.com/

Yes, White Wolf's World of Darkness had been spun off into the Fox
television show Kindred:The Embraced. The two hour pilot movie appeared
Tuesday, April 2nd on the Fox Tuesday Night Movie, and then the show moved
into it's regular timeslot (8:00 PM CST, right after Beverly Hills:90210) on
Wednesday April 3rd. Eight shows have been filmed, one of which only aired
in Canada. It appears that Kindred has not been picked up for the Fall '96
season. While it is certainly possbile that this may change, the generally
lackluster ratings probably means that Kindred will not return. (But you
never know.)

The television show was about the Kindred of San Francisco, and centered
around the Prince of the City, Julian Luna, and the politics of running a
city of Kindred. The show itself was not "canonical" with the game world.
While differences in behavior between the stereotype of the Clan in the game
and the behavior of the characters on screen can be chalked up to
individuality (it's not written in blood that all Brujah have to be punks),
the powers and abilities of the Kindred on TV were different from those of
the Vampires in the game.

3> WHAT'S THIS "BLACK DOG GAMES" THING I'VE HEARD ABOUT?

In the World of Darkness, Black Dog Games is one of Pentex's subsidiaries.
BDG is essentially the gaming company that does everything that your parents
and certain religious groups has accused gaming of causing. The games are
designed to make you worship the Wyrm, and send all your money to BDG.

In our world, Black Dog Games is a mature readers imprint for White Wolf. In
a way similar to DC splitting their line into the regular DC Universe and
the Vertigo Line, White Wolf has decided to designate an imprint of their
product as for Mature Readers Only. This allows store owners to keep an eye
on these games, to make sure that people who buy them are mature enough to
read them.

THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY By Christopher Kubasik $5.99

"For now we see through a glass darkly; but soon we shall see reality
whole and God face to face."--I Corinthians:13

The stage is set for the greatest struggle between magick and realism.
It is a struggle to alter the flow of history, to control the soul of
humanity. Father Thomas Thorn is a Catholic priest whose belief in God
is as powerful as the Magick he wields. Madame de Pompadour, the
flamboyant bisexual transvestite mage, houses the secret Cult of Ecstasy
in his gay nightclub in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, and may be the
only ally upon which Father Thorn can depend. Rene Descartes, the
17th-century philosopher and scientist destined to destroy the Church he
worships, is caught between the influences of both the Technocracy and a
perfidious Pagan witch, Lila Lauler. Set in three different time
periods, Through a Glass Darkly is a journey through the pages of
history that have defined man's views on faith, science and mysticism.

THE BOOK OF CRAFTS: WHISPERS OF DISSENT $18

Those who see only the four sides of the Ascension Conflict ignore the
"Crafts," magickal societies that forsake Traditions and Technocracy for
the Paths of their ancestors. Templars, voodoo priests, alchemists and
modern Amazons are just a few of the nine groups detailed herein. What
tales might they tell? The Book of Crafts:Whispers of Dissent presents
nine magickal societies from the borders of the Ascnesion War. Finally,
your chance to play a whole new Mage character - one who isn't a mage at
all! This book details the "hedge wizards" of the World of Darkness.

"Nine magickal societies with their own histories and agendas. Some hail
from China and the Pacific, while others come from Europe, the
Caribbean, or more enigmatic points of origin." --Phil Brucato, Mage Developer

10/96

BEYOND THE BARRIERS: THE BOOK OF WORLDS $22

Pass through the gauntlet, wander past the Penumbra, and encounter an
infinity of worlds floating just beyond consciousness. Heavens, hells,
Paradox Realms, Chantries, Umbral Reflections, and mysterious Zones spin
in the unmappable dance of creation. Push on through the Horizon, and
endless space becomes your playground. Wise travellers need a guide. The
Book of Worlds is a massive Mage sourcebook for Umbral Travellers. It
details rough cosmologies, sample Realms amd mystick places. Mages paly
with the fabric of reality; what we consider real has little meaning for
them, and this book helps you create in your game what your characters
can experience - and create - in a reality controlled only by
immagination.

THE HORIZON WAR TRILOGY: THE ROAD TO HELL by Robert Weinberg $5.99

The battle for reality itself ignites as mages of all stripes vie for

dominance of all known creation. The Road To Hell is the first
installment in the Horizon War Trilogy.

A trilogy of novels for Mage:The Ascension, by the author of the
Masquerade of the Red Death Trilogy. "This new series will feature many
characters who have appeared in Mage gamebooks from White Wolf and will
closely tie in with events covered in the gamebooks published over the
next few years. Bob is working closely with Phil Brucato, the game
developer on Mage, on this series, and the books are going to have some
major surprises for White Wolf plans." --from the Robert Weinberg Home

MAGE: FALL OF THE COVENANTS (planned for 1998)

It began with a cannon blast. It ended with reality in chains. For many
Europeans, the Renaissance meant the rise of Reason. For practitioners
of the mystick Arts, it meant the....

Fall of the Covenants
the first fires of the Ascension War.

In 1210, a group of angry peasants and jealous lords stormed a Hermetic
Chantry and battered down the walls with cannon - weaponry unlike
anything ever seen before. The Technocracy had arrived.

In 1325, early Technocrats arrived at a magician's tower, slew her, and
held a parliament that came to be called the Convention of the White
Tower. There, magicians of Reason from all over the world united and
declared war upon the supernatural world. From that meeting the Order of
Reason emerged. The Ascension War began that year.

Most magi remained unaware. Across the globe, they pursued their own
agendas. Some warred with rival wizards, while others governed local
kingdoms or secluded themselves in study. The Order of Reason took
advantage of these distractions to slay the dragons (literally) that
plagued the commoners: ignorance, disease, mythic creatures, and the
oppression of the lords, knights and magi.

By 1400, things had changed dramatically. Spells that once were easy
became dangerous. The beasts whose blood held magickal properties
dwindled, and mortals who once respected magi dragged the mysticks to
the fire. Plagues, wars and roving bandits scoured the land and Paradox,
the Twilight all mages fear, poisoned the mystic Arts. Even far-off
lands felt the dimming of magick's fire, and the mages were alarmed.

In 1466, they came together. From across the world, wizards gathered.
From their unity, the Nine Traditions formed. Mage: Fall of the
Covenants brings you into this turbulent world - into an age where
cultures clash, wizards converge, and legends die.

The years between 1450 and 1600 saw unequaled change - an age of castles,
intrigues, conquests and mysteries. Elizabeth of England, John Dee and
Da Vinci. Aztecs and Inquisitors, privateers, knights and samurai.
Secret societies and fabled beasts. This era sees chivalry, science,
romance and violence. Kingdoms rose and empires grew; explorers crossed
into distant lands while plagues and witch-hunts left whole cities
barren. The dramatic possibilities are endless.

Mage: Fall of the Covenants presents the world in flux. In it, you can
choose many roles: the mystick, who fights to retain his magickal
birthright; the reason-mage, who fights to free her world from
supernatural terrors; the Disparate, who plays both ends against the
middle; or the Outsider, who works to brings down the world. The game's
setting allows you to cross the Paths of the Wyck into the Americas,
venture into the Dreaming Lands of Africa, or storm the castles of
France. Unlike modern Mage, this setting is fairly earthbound. Although
the Otherworlds exist, they're quite mysterious and ill-defined. Many of
the traditional mythic beasts still exist on Earth, hidden from plain
sight but active just the same. Who needs Horizon Realms when the dragon
is next door?

In short, then, Fall of the Covenants is no stuffy simulation game -
it's a full-blast fantasy tale where the players fight for the future of
magick. The eventual fate that future holds adds a sense of drama and
apocalyptic urgency the average fantasy setting lacks; the world is
changing every day, and it's a hell of a time to be alive. The Book
Following on the heels of the successful and acclaimed second edition of
Mage: The Ascension and the best-selling Vampire: The Dark Ages, this
hardcover book continues the White Wolf tradition of quality writing,
dynamic storytelling, powerful art and high drama.

It doesn't end with Death. David Robinson's life has taken several turns

dark forces withing the Shadowlands will stop at nothing to obtain it.

knows that power is a blade that cuts two ways.

"It's Black Dog. You knew that. The authors are Rob Hatch and someone
who's taking a pen name; this author has worked for us before but has
professional concerns about having his name on a game book. He discussed
them with me and I agreed that a pen name was the best way to go. Janet
Berliner, author of Child of the Light and Child of the Journey, is also
going to be contributing to the book, as will I.

The book is a regional sourcebook, to a certain extent. It is also a
historical sourcebook in a way, filling in a period of World of Darkness
history that's been avoided until now.

Some of you may have seen my posts on why we shouldn't do Wraith: World
War II. My main objection was that it would be impossible to portray the
Holocaust within the context of a main rulebook and do it with respect.
The only way to do so, I maintained, would be in a Black Dog supplement.
April of 1997, you will see Charnel Houses of Europe: The Shoah.

It's another way to tell the story that must be told.

This will not be a full sized book like Dark Ages. If I remember
correctly, it will be a $15 book. Though there's so much material to
work with, I honestly don't think I could have made it bigger.

The book will deal with before, during and after, with an emphasis on
consequences. It will deal heavily in shades of grey. It will be
horrifying, because it will stick as close to the truth as possible.
There won't be many heroes in it. It won't be close to comprehensive. It
won't just be about Jews and Nazis, and it won't be Schindler's. The art
will be sparse and iconic, and Lawrence Snelly and I have already talked
about whose work would be right for this. Lawrence is very much behind
this project, for which I am quite thankful.

The central idea of the book is that the Shoah was a human tragedy.
Supernatural parasites might have taken advantage of it, wraiths might
have been born of it, but it was first, last and always the act of
so-called human beings.

I am fully aware of the potential repercussions of this book. I've
discussed it with a rabbi, and with my sister, who works for the Shoah
project. I know that no matter what I do, I will anger people. I may
hurt people, who say that "The Holocaust is not fitting material for a
game."

Believe me, I wrestled with that issue. I decided to do the book anyway.

Why?

Because we must keep telling the story.

That is all I have to say for now.

Now you know why I kept it secret. Now you know why the project was so
important. I hope it lives up to its promise." -Richard Dansky
Developer, Wraith: The Oblivion

"Also, I will be supporting the Dark Kingdoms subline as best I can -

first is The Ebon Mask and it looks pretty good. Mucho Dark Kingdoms
material in it." --Richard Dansky

5> ARE THEY GOING TO DO A STORYTELLER OMNIBUS, DETAILING HOW TO RUN
CROSSOVER GAMES?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: One of the "yeah, that'd be cool" projects that various
developers had discussed was a crossover book. That project has been
shelved. Rules for crossovers have appeared in the Storyteller's Screens for
Wraith, Changeling and Mage 2nd Edition, along with the adventure The Chaos
Factor.

6> IS THERE GOING TO BE A GEHENA/APOCALYPSE/RECKONING/OBLIVION/ETC
"ADVENTURE"?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: While various sourcebooks have said that Gehena (or whatever)
is right around the corner, White Wolf is not currently planning to have a
Gehena adventure or sourcebook. Gehena is the end of the world as we know
it, after all.

7> WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO AFTER THE FIFTH STORYTELLER GAME?

Once the five games of the World of Darkness are out, they will continue to
produce supplements for them. They are not planning to add additional full
rulebook "Monster:The Description" games, but will presumably continue
adding supplementary games like Mummy and the Year of the Hunter books.

According to the Afterword in Changeling, in addition to the TV Show they
have some plans for CDROM games. The next big thing is the "Cry Wolf"
project, getting White Wolf on the web in a big way.

White Wolf is starting a line of science-fiction RPG's next year, starting
with Exile. You can visit the Exile web-page, and download a playtest copy
of the rules from: http://www.null-f.org/.

Yup, and for the next big revision, I'll take out the references. I'm
just leaving it in for folks who were curious about it.

Except that future products are coming out under the Black Dog label, so
I thought it was a good idea to explain what it means.
