Ah, easy question to answer. A splatbook is one of books that details
one of the supernatural groups in the world of darkness. Clanbook:
Nosferatu is a splatbook, as is Tribebook: Fianna or Guildbook:
Haunters.

I don't remember how the name itself got started, but I remember being
told sometime in the past. I'm sure someone will know, none the less.

The name "splatbook" comes from Computer Science lingo. Some text
characters have nicknames, ie "!"=bang, "*"=splat, among programmers,
due to the fact that they're easier to say quickly when reading a line
of code. The origins of those names should be obvious.

As any DOS or UNIX user will know, the "*" is also a wildcard.

Therefore, "*books" = "splatbooks".

I read a post a while ago by the guy who coined the phrase in a
newsgroup or magazine article or something, and I'm sure if he reads
this newsgroup he'll be happy to make himself known. Again.

(And I am a CS major, so I got it without reading that guy's post :)

The (allegedly) in detail books about a given supernatural group.

Quick history lesson folks: WW started with the Clan Books, then
added tribe books, and then Trad(ition) books, etc. Since they had
common elements, people on the mailing lists began calling those
books splatbooks when talking about them in general.

And of course some people think that adequately describes the
contents as well. ;')

It comes from the old DOS term for a wildcard: *. So a *book is a
'splat-book.'

However, don't be fooled. Mark Rein*Hagen is pronounced
"Rein-bjork-Hagen".

No, Mark uses a bullet, not an asterisk. So, casually, I guess it
would be Rein "Bullet" Hagen.
Kinda cool, but "bjork" seems to fit, too, with the flavor of the name...

Cool! I've wanted to use a bullet on Mark a few times, too.......
