Now that that's out of the way, on to my first post of 2002. Everyone go
grab your copy of the Guide to the Traditions. Now look at the picture on
the cover. On the left side, there's a gothy-lookin' long-haired brunette
with a pair of goggles, a V.A. symbol on her shoulder, a pistol, and some
pretty tight-fitting clothing. She's standing at not quite 90 degrees from
the plane of the cover, but we can all see both of her legs and both of her
shoulders. The trouble is, she only seems to have one boob. Am I the only
one who notices this?

Hey! Come back out here! No fair mooching off the rest of the
conversation without contributing to it!
It's easy. Start with an introduction or something, say what games you
play and what lines you collect. If you want to get really ambitious,
you can do a "My Shelf Is Bigger Than Yours" post, saying which books
you /own/. After that, further conversation is easier.
Puleeeeze? This newsgroup /really/ needs more traffic. Why, I remember
when...

Well in that case, hello :)
I've started reading usenet posts again after a long time and have included
a.g.ww in my subscribe list...
I've been reading for about a month and it ain't bad :) You probably noticed
i posted some posts by now...
I play Werewolf & Vampire, and collect their books (No i cannot compete with
the others :)) I've been playing D&D but i find it shallow & boring in
comparison with WOD games... I prefer Werewolf...
And yes i love the Year of the Lotus supplements :)
After trekking the web, speaking with a couple of friends and reading about
the Technocracy...
What should i get of the books if i want to start playing Mage?
I've heard that the 2nd ed is better then revised but i don't know where to
start...

No, seriously, I understand where you're coming from even if I don't

As do I. There really hasn't been any bad Lotus supplements released,
although I speak as someone who hasn't read all of them (just most).

That really depends on what you want out of it.
Honestly, as much as I'd like to say otherwise, you should probably
start with Revised. For more info on the Techs, pick up Guide to the
Technocracy.
Still, M2nd is a good book, and if you can find a copy for cheap I'd
advise picking it up.
How much do you care about metaplot and canon?

I noticed, but being homosexual, decided not to care about her booby. Which
is also rather round. I do believe it is a flotation device of some sort.
Oh...and I'm sorry...I'm SICK of those "I have long blonde hair and dress
angelicly" Celestial Chorus men. I think the reason people don't like the
Celestial Chorus is that there aren't any cool pictures of them out there.

Nope. She has one booby.
> Nope. She has one booby.
Actually, I'm looking at the picture right now. She's standing sideways
with her head turned. The left breast is visible and the right breast
is presumably behind it. This would indicate some significant size
difference, though.
It's not my favorite picture, for reasons unrelated to that. I wish
they'd commissioned Shy or something.
Year of the lotus

Well, after the corebook, Tales of Magick: Dark Adventure is quite
good. It uses the second edition ruleset, but it's easy to convert if
you chose to start with MRev.
And see if you can dig up a copy of Beyond the Barriers: The Book of
Worlds.
> Year of the lotus
> KOE, Hengeyokai & Demon Hunter X... that's what i read and i love it

I would also recommend Dharma-book: Devil Tiger. It's The Splatbook
Against Which All Other Splatbooks Are Judged, for one, and the info
contained within is almost a necessity if you want a portrayal of the
Devils of Heaven as more than snarling psychopaths.
Perhaps she's a neo-Amazonian woman. They used to cut off their right
breasts so that they could better and quickly draw their bows. Of course,
with laser guns (et al) the reasoning behind this in a contemporary setting
seems a little odd, but hey. There could be some twisted logic behind it for
anyone who wants to contrive it.
Nimrod...
Arg! You just reminded me that I need to read that book... soon. I'm playing
a Devil Tiger in an upcoming KOE game set in Japan. I'm very reluctant to
have him as the typical psycho, but I do want to lend some of the Japanese
flavour to his character: a member of one of those infamous Japanese biker
gangs, the only rite he knows is the one that allows him to create Bakémono,
with which he (OK, *I*) wants to create a Bakémono biker gang to exact his
vengeance on those responsible for his death. At the heart of it, however, I
want to portray a more complex character. This is, surprisingly (or maybe
not), the first vaguely combat-style character that I'll have played,
usually opting for the less grunt 'n' kill orientated concepts -- even my
Exalted character wasn't a fighter (and yes, found that out the hard
[bloodied, clawing, crawling hand away from the battle, playing dead] way
many a time).
Nimrod...

I know next to nothing about Mage, but I suppose that if you want to

the core book would be enough. I heard that Sorcerer Revised is good,

That's OK. Saying the same thing someone else already said, but in your
own words, is fine. How often are simple little turns of phrase or
minor points spun off into completely different threads. Just look at
the abomination that was produced when Richard Clayton replied to some
spam and mentioned ghouled bees.

It may be a Paradox Flaw. Using magic to perform third-person

gradually begin to look like Lara Croft - one spline at a time.

I think it would have been a plus to make it match the Guide to
the Technocracy (and the Book of Madness), just as the Guide to
the Camarilla and Guide to the Sabbat match in their cover art.

Unfortunately, that would not have been possible, as the GttTechs and
the BoM don't have matching cover art.
Still, I will continue to promote Christopher Shy as The Mage Art Guy.

Chris Shy is the guy (hey that rhymes!) that did the
Character-portaits in the Revised Vampire Clanbooks, isn't he? If so,
then I comepletly agree with you.
Otherwise, THAT is imho the Mage Art Guy.. (although, I keep repeating
myself, I have never read a Mage book) He hast that flurry (you know

I think I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I am the only left

Look at the the story in Mage Revised that is before the table of contents.
David Leri did that...and I might say, quite well. He's probably my
favorite artist White Wolf is using right now.
> > President of the Anti-Shy Society.
> Well, I think that the Society is misguided. To say the least.
I don't know. The signature pics for Mage Revised aren't that great.
Though his stuff in CB: Setite and MtR are very sexy.
Pretty close. Natural selection tells us that, in time, all
the left-handed people will die off and only the superior right-handed
people will be around. That's why the right-handed people made such
wonderful products as right-handed scissors, right-handed gear-shifts,
and (my favorite) right-handed ergonomic mice for computers - they
wanted to speed up the process. ];) You're a dying breed, man.
Not that you were speakin' to me, but if you *insist*...
I bought Adventure! as a Christmas gift for my roommate. And, of course,
before giving it to him I had to spend frog-knows-how-many hours reading it
myself.
Once again, any game that includes giant robots, dinosaurs, and carnivorous
ape-men in it's appendix /has/ to get a thumbs-up grade.
The 'mate is a big Call of Cthulu fan, and now he's despairing about whether
or not he should run a prohibition-era street chronicle game of Adventure!
or CoC. The torment is amusing to see. <insert evil laugh here>
One thing. How come no one mentioned Bruce Willis' "Last Man Standing" in
the source material? I would've thought that a two-fisted, guns a-blazin'
tale of prohibition mafia war couldn't get more pulp-y.
I mean, after all, when Bruce shoots people in that movie, they go flying
about twenty feet from a single shot. If that's not screaming 'daredevil', I
don't know what is. :)
Regards,
Kevin

Likely, we won't /ever/ know. Either it's something boring, like he
stopped doing that style of art or wanted to concentrate on something

it's not really our business.

Oh, that guy.
Yes, he's cool. I'm not fond of his picture of a Man in Black (which is
a shame, because I like the fact that it's a /rea/ mage Man in Black,
complete with trenchcoat and fedora), but all of his other stuff is
great.
> I don't know. The signature pics for Mage Revised aren't that great.

I love most of the signature pics. Especially when they're in color.
The Euthanatos picture is especially stunning. Pretty much the only one
that I'm not fond of is the Verbena, but that's probably because it's
just all various shades of brown.
Oh, and I don't understand why the Dreamspeaker is wearing a breastplate

Frighteningly enough, if I weren't a solid non-breeder, I would FORCE my

how in everything in my life except write and paint, I can do right handed
from holding a baseball bat/tennis raquet/fire arm (I'm actually
ambi-dexterous when it comes to those activities), to wearing a watch (I
wear it on my left wrist....so I can look at the time while writing).
Also..most people can READ my handwriting because I know how to properly
hold a pen, which lots of left handed people are unable to do. In
fact...the only reason I'm not right handed or abidexterous is because when
it comes to signing my name, I can ONLY do it in my left hand.

He's had a few pics I'm not stunned with, but I love the last pic of the

See...my problem is that each Tradition of Mages should be remarkably
different. I'm just so blase towards the pictures, never mind the fact that
everyone is in techno-armor in an ultra-future technology setting. It was
very a propos for Guide to the Technocracy (I liked all those) but I must
say I was VERY dissapointed with the main Mage book pictures. The only pics
I think are tolerable are the Akashic Brotherhood (well...I mean at least
the picture is of someone of Asian descent) and the Cult of Ecstacy (very
trippy...but appropriate I think). And a big MAYBE for the Virtual Adepts.
Everyone else...I'm sorry to say...it just sucked.

See, I love Leif Jones. My favorite artist. Jones reads art notes. Jones
conveys ideas in his art. Jones actually pays attention. As a result, Jones
creates brilliant pieces like the Akshaic sig, his Kindred of the East
stuff, and the stunning Sabbat "prophet" from Guide to the Sabbat.

Tim Bradstreet's style became a bit "dated." Which is to say when you look
at his pics, for the most part, they scream "early 90's." The art for the
clan pictures was aimed at lasting a while, so they went with a painter who
could create images that had a sense of longevity.

Actualyl Tim is up doing other things. I have his book "Maximum Black"
which has stuff from a variety of other publishers. And his last job was to
work as production designer for Blade 2.

He did help define early WoD. I think there should be a few more pictures
of snow covered cemeteries in Vampire books, but that's just me.

Fine, I'll admit that Leif does some good stuff. Almost all of the
sample character pictures from the revised Clanbooks, for example.
But I think his mage stuff is too distorted. I'd much prefer the
semi-realistic/bizzare stuff that Shy does.
And I'll say that I agree with you that the Akashic pic is good. As is
the Virtual Adept. But the Verbena is only average, and the Euthanatos
is /so/ irritating...

I like it except for the facial expression. The MiB looks, to put it

Man in Black, but I'm not fond of those.
Also, his gun looks like something out of a gangster movie.

Go to your local comics store. Look at the covers for Punisher (Marvel),
Hellblazer (DC), and many others. It's very simple: Bradstreet got
commercial work in a more lucrative field, and judging from his output,
all he could handle and then some. He's one of the current crop of hot
illustrators, in fact.

Good for him, then, for what it's worth.
I don't keep up with the world of comics as much as I'd like to.

Tim Bradstreet has also done some conceptual design work for Blade 2:
Bloodhunt (look for the Ron Perlman starring as Scary Black Hand Face).

In the spirit of fair play, I'll also mention that yes, there's some stuff
Shy has done that I like. It's just none of it is for White Wolf. However,
his stuff for All Flesh Must Be Eaten is superb, and gave the whole zombie
horror stuff a wonderful twist.
Oh, all right. His Orphans and Disparites picture was really nice too. But
that's as far as I go!

But at least his Cultist of Ectasy looks, well, ecstatic. I can think of a
lot of things the cultists should be: Decadent, lustful, sadistic, kind,
vibrant and intriguing. Any and all of the above. But never jaded, and
that's exactly what Shy's picture looks like.

Disagree on the gun, but the face... well, OK. I can kinda see your point. I

I should really at least /glance through/ a copy of AFMBE, shouldn't I?

Ecstatic, yes. But too cartoony.
I see your point, though. What would be really cool was if they had
different artists do the pictures for each Trad. I can't really think
of one that's perfect for all of them.

Ok...the number of left handed, post-modern Amazonian Virtual Adepts who've
Awakened?

I like AFMBE. How can you go WRONG with a game title like that?
And Shy's work is very nice in it.

I still think Shy could have done all of them...if he had a good description
of what the Traditions were about and got off the Techno-armor trip he was
on (which he managed to do for stuff outside of the main Mage book) I'm sure
the Tradition pictures would have been much better.

Indeed ! I remember the early days, when I discovered the Vampire and
Shadowrun core books. Both were partly illustrated by Tim. Both made me
feel like I had found the Graal of RPGs. The portraits had such an
incredible depth ! MOOD !! I want MOOD, no stinking eight-eyed beholder

Let's see. I have M2nd and Book of Shadows. Great game. Awesome game. I
found the Book of Shadow to be very nice and useful in some ways
(traditions novels, new backrounds), and pretty boring in some others
(certamen, who cares ?).
I also bought an english Werewolf 1st ed, with a few supplements (you
know, the tribebooks have that litle silly/funny comic at the beginning.
How far are we from Tim BradStreet. Sigh...). These are the five books I
never use - except for throwing the occasional Ananasi in our Sabbat
chronicle, the beholder effect, you know.
My friend has Vampire 2nd, Guide to the Sabbat, and Player's guide. We
don't know much about any "metaplot", except for the very well known (and
sometimes controversial) issues discussed here - the Tremere Antitribu,
the Gangrel leaving, the Week of Nightmares, Tzimisce can't beat Cthulhu,
etc. ;)
Well, my books. How boring.
As for you and Richard being like "stock footage" for the moments where
the group is silent, I have been lurking for 4 months here, and you are
very entertaining - the bees and all, prefect. Please feel free to

Maybe.. But they could have directed him into that "longevity" style. Or

Nah, I disagree. The chapters being done by the same artist is a really
easy, useful way to ensure that a book graphically looks consistent and
unified. I see your point though, the traditions are ultra-varied. Still, so
are the tribes in Werewolf to large degrees, and the variations are subtler
sometimes. Yet Prescott nailed every last one of them. I thought one or two
weren't very attractive to look at, but hey, neither are all werewolves. And
the Glass Walker one is just so damned cool.

Well, statistically, out of all the left-handed, post-modern Amazonian
Virtual Adepts in the world, I see no reason why the chances of them
Awakening should be any different than all the right-handed, post-modern
Amazonian Virtual Adepts.
Nimrod...

I think it's more along the lines that his pictures tended to be of a
certain motif, which after a while, becomes dated. I still like Bradstreet
though.

My group only seems to have time for around one game a week. Schedules (work

I can see it being a western, but it still gives me plenty of inspiration.

No, I agree on the chapter headings.
I was talking (typing) about the pictures that go with each Tradition
description. If they were done by different artists but given the same
guidelines, such as "must be such high by such wide", "must embody [this
tradition, and artist is given description of tradition to work off]",
and "must clearly be one character (so no fights of watercolor blurs)",

I'm not ashamed. It's kinda like that girl on Six Feet Under will always be

did it once, and will live with that forever. Now I must find something

Unless you're trying to be metaphysical, t'aint so. There are a
number of Leif Jones pieces with more than one person. The most
controversial art in Montreal by Night is the first to come to
mind, along with a few memorable Trinity pieces. Almost all of
his templates and clan signature characters have a single person,
but that's to be expected.

I believe he meant a metaphysical approach to the tradition portraits on
pages 49 through 80 of Mage: The Ascension Revised. Several of them,
specifically Cult of Ecstasy, the Euthanatos, the Sons of Ether, the
Verbena, and the Virtual Adepts have two people in each portrait.
The Virtual Adept is easy. The one on page 76 is the VA's physical
body, while the one on page 77 is the Icon she's projecting into the
Digital Web.
The Verbena embodies the dualistic male/female division, showing how
each Verbena has a bit of both within them. This is not necessarily
something that exists in canon, but might make a neat spin on the
concept.
The Son of Ether, Cultist of Ecstasy, and Euthanatos are each somewhat
simpler than that, in that each is a picture of a mage with visible
avatar. The Etherite is guided by his Lady of Science, who rubs her
hands together in the background as all Mad Scientist should, the
Euthanatos uses the hindu traditions her Avatar teaches her but herself
reflects the modern world in her dress and her martial leanings in her
stance (not that her Avatar is wholly without martial leanings or modern
trappings himself, as he cradles his handgun), and the Ecstatic dances
to the beat of her ethereal drummer.

Oh, gack.
Redefining the question.
In each of Leif Jones' Tradition splat pictures, there's only one person.
Discuss.
Cheers,
Sean.
"Last Man Standing" is a Western, yeah. It's "Un Pugno Di Dollari" ("For A
Fistful Of Dollars").
Oh, wait. "For A Fistful Of Dollars" is the Kurosawa movie "Yojimbo."
Oh, darn! "Yojimbo" is Dashiell Hammett's "Red Harvest."

I'm not ashamed of what I do either, but I consider sex a very private
thing, and therefore don't discuss it in a forum as public as a.g.ww. I may not
be ashamed of my credit card, but that doesn't mean that I'm posting the number.

Methinks I could guess what you were thinking. (^_^)
I'm VERY ashamed of my credit card...the number is as follows....
Besides, I haven't said anything that hasn't been photographed by
Maplethorpe.

Oooh...dodged that one huh? Is silence an admittance of truth? ;D

Probably not by a long shot. ; )

Amazon dot com shopping spree with somebody else's credit card, here I
come... (^_~)

I have no comments at this time.

You might be surprised...

At least be smart about it and buy all the stuff I have for sale on
half.com, so that way I can get SOMETHING out of the deal.

Another comment I feel you'd rather not have me post. ; )

On a semi-OT point, on a 500 question purity test I scored a miraculous 14%.

You're right. I can't find the art I was thinking of - I thought
Shy had done an assembly of Technocrats for the cover, having
forgotten about Baxa's MiB on the cover. I might've been thinking
of Shy's interior art for the GttTech, mixed with Leif Jones' "You
Are the Weapon" art with the different Trinity Psion Orders, as
I can't find an exact match to what I was thinking was the cover.

I like some of his stuff, but art direction is too important. I
read in an interview that the cover art for the Bitter Road was
very important to him, and I'm sure it carries significant meaning
- to him - but among everyone else, the comment I have heard has
been an overwhelming "Huh?"
The Mona Lisa's a nice portrait, too, but, it doesn't advertise a
guide to Adepts' lives in the post-Ascension War setting for Mage
that would distinguish it from other art that could have been used
for the cover.

Yep, that's what I got out of it too.

Nice! That's a really neat take on it. I like that a lot. Taking it further,
it's the dichotomy of the old and the new, with the classical looking woman
in the background and the less traditional man in the foreground. All very
Verbena, in my opinion.

This was my take on most of them, but I love how you went further with it.

Her handgun, you mean. ;-) She holds his knife, he holds her gun. The two
are entwined.

About how I saw the image, too.
Cheers,
Sean.
