Hey. Anyone out there know if there is a glossary of pronunciations for
the Storyteller System? I mean, in the Sabbat Players Guide, the terms
were all phonetically spelled out so you could pronounce properly.

You know, words like Samedi. (I've been told it's french or haitian or
something and it's pronounced Sahm-DEE. Now how the heck am I supposed
to know that?)

Or Vitae? (of course, I HAVE seen it printed Vit‘, which would make it
Vi-TEE. But would that be Vi-TEE or VY-tee?)

See what I mean? So, is there or isn't there?

Thanx.

It should be WEE-tie (the w is right, not a typo), because it's Latin.
Only the older Kindred are likely to get it right, or those who
learnt the language after the new pronunciation (which was the original
pronunciation reconstructed) was brought in, around the turn of the century.

Similarly, an-KILL-a (all c's are hard in Latin), TREM-eh-re (this isn't
a diphthong). Brujah should be BROO-hah (Spanish), but I'll bet that
most Kindred don't pronounce it that way. You can always have your
characters mispronounce everything, especially if they learn the stuff
by reading.

It is French, but the origin of the name is Arcadian (Cajun) in nature.
It's from Baron Samedi, one of the more powerful Barons in the New Orleans
area (BTW, in Voodoo/Voudon mythology, the first person buried in any
particular gravesite is that gravesite's Baron, and is responsible for
protecting the other dead buried there.)

Neither. it's Vee-tie. It's Latin, meaning "life", and thus should have
a Latin pronunciation. And, of course, Celerity starts with a "k" sound,
for the same reason. *grin*

Actually, how you pronounce it is up to you. I've heard multiple
pronunciations of Chimerstry, ranging from "Chim-ess-tree" to "Ky-mes-tree"
to "Ky-mer-stree", etc. I've also heard multiple pronunciations for
"Vitae", "Celerity", "Tremere", "Tzimisce", and a slew of others.

In the end, as long as everyone in the group knows what you're talking
about, it really doesn't matter how you say it. In fact, having multiple
pronunciations can, sometimes, aid the feel of a campaign, if everyone
whose heard of a certain Discipline calls it something different, it keeps
people guessing. In the last all-VtM Chronicle I ran, PC's didn't even
refer to Disciplines by their names; they used the names for each separate
power, and kept a running record of which powers they knew, not which
Disciplines they had. It helped keep a level of mystery, and also heightened
the "we really aren't sure what we're doing" feeling, which I was trying
to establish.

I say Mal-CAVE-ee-un
You say Mal-KAHV-ee-un
Mal-CAVE-ee-un
Mal-KAHV-ee-un
Mal-CAVE-ee-un
Mal-KAHV-ee-un
Let's call the whole thing nuts.

The first edition of VtM has pronunciations given for all of the major
Camarilla clans, and a few other terms in captions on some of the artwork.
Sorry to disapoint everyone but Brujah isn't Spanish and the 'j' is
actually pronounced as and english 'j'.
