However, Auspex says:
"cannot see vamps with higher obfuscate" (the other way round).
It's clear enough that someone with Auspex 4 can spot a vamp with
Obf 2, and alternatively, someone with Obf 4 can hide from a pesky
vamp with Auspex 2.
But what happens if they are equal?
If one vamp is hiding with Obf 3, and another with Auspex 3 is looking,
who spots who?

The way we run it is that the obfuscated character rolls a pool of Obfuscate
dice at difficulty 6 and the detecter rolls Auspex at difficulty 8. This
applies regardless of the level of discipline, which gives those people without
massive Auspex at least a fighting chance (rather than the deterministic rule
as per usual). If there is a tie, they simply dice off, higher roll wins
unless someone wants to spend a Willpower point.

I'm not official, but here's what I do, and my players seem to live with it:
If you have Auspex equal to or higher than the opponent's Obfuscate, you
can make an opposed roll of Perception + Occult versus the opponent's
Obfuscate roll (usually it's Wits+Stealth, or some such), to see who spots
whom.
If you have the merit Clear Sighted, I let you make the opposed roll to
spot Obfuscated folks no matter what the relative levels of Ob or Aus are
(I don't let folks completely ignore the Ob discipline for so cheap a
merit).
The players, many of whom have one or both of these disciplines, seem happy.

Here is the way we play it in my neck of the woods:
Manny is using Obfuscate 2. However, he possesses Ob 3, which we all
know is not a hiding power, so he is using level 2 to hide.
Bobby wants to find Manny. Since Manny HAS Ob 3, even though he is only
using Ob 2, we consider it to be "Ob 2 at the power of Ob 3" and
therefore Bobby will need at least Auspex 3 to see Manny.
If Bobby has Auspex 3 exactly, we roll a challenge - perhaps Manny's
Dexterity + Stealth versus Bobby's Perception + Alertness, or whatever is
appropriate in the situation. (During Larp, we generally judge this based
on Manny's actions and whether Bobby is trying to find Manny as opposed
to just looking around. Generally Manny will win with his Obfuscate, but
sometimes it's more fun to have Bobby's Auspex win. We often just wing
it.)
If Bobby has Auspex 4, he'll see right through Manny's Obfuscate, and
indeed, if he is distracted, not paying attention or has a low Perception
or Alertness or something, may not even notice that Manny was _trying_ to
hide.
