Hi folks -

A friend of mine told me that someone wrote an article on vampire
demographics.
Does anyone have a copy of the article that they could repost (or email
to me if
its been posted recently)?

I'm setting up a LARP, and I'm working on making a little more
"realistic" (read:
self-consistent) than is par-for-the-course.

Thanks in advance,

Marc

If you mean this, sure. The first part of it is directly quoted from the
VtM2 FAQ, by Rob Hatch:

<<The vampire-to-human ratio is 1 to 100,000. Last I checked, the human
population was 5.5 billion or so. Let's assume that the World of Darkness,
scumulous place that it is, is even more overcrowded than our own
garbage-strewn sphere, so we've got six billion agonized souls trudging and
plodding their way through the WoD.

That gives us 60,000 vampires, of which at least 20,000 are Cathayans and
thus not "Kindred" at all (see KINDRED OF THE EAST, plug, plug). So, in all
the great wide world, a mere 40,000 Cainites exist to commit atrocities,
concoct Machiavellian* plots, and wear sunglasses at night. Of these 40,000,
most either belong to one of the 13 great clans or are Caitiff. The more
populous, less choosy clans, like the Brujah, might have all of 3,000-5,000
members, while insular types like the Tremere and Giovanni sport a mere
1,500 or so members worldwide. (Same population as my high school. There's a
reason why vampires don't control every facet of human history.)

However you work it, there are maybe a thousand or so Kindred to divide
among all the multitudinous bloodlines in the entire world.>>

Based on that, I worked out the following grouping list, which I use in my
chronicles if it ever comes up:

Total number of vampires: 40000
Camarilla: 20000 (2300 Ventrue, 1550 Tremere, 3000 Toreador, 3000 Nosferatu,
3000 Malkavians, 1000 Gangrel, 4000 Brujah, 350 others)
Sabbat: 7000 (2000 Lasombra, 2000 Tzimisce, 350 Assamite antitribu, 450
Brujah antitribu, 250 Gangrel antitribu, 250 Ravnos antitribu, 70 Harbingers
of Skulls, 250 Malkavian antitribu, 250 Nosferatu antitribu, 350 Panders,
100 Salubri antitribu, 180 Serpents of the Light, 300 Toreador antitribu,
200 Ventrue antitribu)
Assamites: 2000
Gangrel: 1800
Giovanni: 1500
Ravnos: 2500
Setites: 2500
Bloodlines: 1000
Caitiff: 3500

The Vampire Demographics you look for was indeed written by Paul Strack and
has been out now - ahh.. - a couple of years so I would say it is not the
most accurate you can find. You can find the article below.

-Robert "Sleepwalk" Jonsson.

Modern Demographics by Generation
By: Paul Strack

1st and 2nd:
Caine and his progeny are largely mythological. They have not moved openly
in recorded history. It is widely believed that Caine still lives, but
Enoch, Zillah and Irad, the three 2nd generation, fell with the first city.

3rd:
There is a single Antediluvian for each of the clans, all embraced during
the age of the second city. Over the millennia, several of them have died,
and a few lower generation vampires have diabolized their way up into their
ranks. By clan, they currently are:

Brujah: Troile [Clanbook: Brujah]
Gangrel: Ennoia [Clanbook: Gangrel]
Malkavian: Malkav [Clanbook: Malkavian]
Nosferatu: Absimilliard [A World of Darkness]
Toreador: Arikel [Clanbook: Toreador]
Tremere: Tremere [Clanbook: Tremere]
Ventrue: Veddartha [A World of Darkness]
Assamite: Haqim/Assam [Vampire: the Dark Ages]
Giovanni: Augustus Giovanni [The Vampire Players Guide]
Ravnos: Dannae [WoD: Gypies]
Setites: Sutekh/Set [The Vampire Players Guide]
Lasombra: unknown [The Children of the Inquisition]
Tzimisce: Lugoj [The Children of the Inquisition]

The slain Antediluvians are believed to be:
Brujah, diabolized by Troile [Clanbook: Brujah]
Saulot of the Salubri, diabolized by Tremere [The Vampire Players Guide]
Cappodocius of the Cappodocians, diabolized by Augustus Giovanni [V:TDA]
Lasombra, diabolized by unknown Sabbat [The Children of the Inquisition]
Tzimisce, diabolized by Lugoj [The Children of the Inquisition]

Note that according to _The Children of the Inquisition_, Tzimisce was not
in fact diabolized by Lugoj, but instead took his name and place. It is also
rumored that some unknown Brujah diabolized the Ventrue Antediluvian. It is
possible that the Sabbat who diabolized Lasombra was not of the 4th
generation, and therefore did not advance to the rank of the Antediluvians.
If Veddartha was indeed diabolized by a Brujah, it is likely the case is the
same with him. Thus, there may now be less than thirteen 3rd generation
vampires in the world.

4th:
The first 4th generation appeared in the later days of the first city. New
4th generation vampires have appeared for as long as the Antediluvians have
been active. Thus, most 4th generation vampires pre-date Rome, and there are
none (?)embraced after the Inquisition. Each Antediluvian has embraced on
average a dozen progeny over the millennia, but time hastaken a harsh toll.
No more than about 50 survive until today, about 4 or so per clan.

5th:
Vampire of the 5th generation appeared in the first and second cities, but
most were slain in the upheavals of their fall.Vampires of the 5th
generation were embraced for as long as 4th generation vampires were active;
most were embraced prior to Rome, but a fair number were embraced in the
Dark Ages. Only a handful have been embraced since the Inquisition. The
surviving 4th generation vampires have embraced on the average 8 progeny
over the millennia, and slain 4th generation often embraced a several
childer before passing on. Two thirds of 5th gen have perished in various
instances, so about 200 of them survive today, or 15 per clan.

6th:
A few 6th generation were embraced and then slain in the first and second
cities. The first surviving 6th gens were embraced in the city-state period,
an equal number embraced during the Imperial age and another equal number
embracedduring the Dark ages. Only several dozen have been embraced since
the Inquisition. Each surviving 5th generation has embraced a half dozen
get, while those that perished created a pair of childer on average. A bit
more than a third of the 6th generation survive, and there are currently 600
of them, or 40 per clan.

7th:
A few 7th generation vampires survive from the city state period, but most
were embraced either during Rome or after. Equal numbers were embraced in
the Imperial period, the Dark Ages and Modern times, though the number of
survivors are skewed more toward modern times. Surviving 6th gen have
embraced 4 childer on average, while those that perishedproduced 1.5 childer
on average. Roughly 65% of the 7th generation fallen over the years, so that
there are now about 1500, with about 100 per clan.

8th:
A few 8th gen survive from Imperial times. Of the rest, half were embraced
in the Dark Ages, half in Modern times. Surviving 7th gen have begotten 3
childer each on average, while those that perished produced only single
childe. About 60% of the 8th gen have fallen so about 3000 survive today.

9th:
Some 9th generation vampires pre-date the Inquisition, but the bulk are
modern. Surviving 8th gen vampires have begotten 2 childer on average, while
those the perished produced 0.75 childer each. About half of the 9th have
perished, leaving 4500 today.

10th:
Few pre-date the Inquisition, and most are modern. In fact, the bulk have
been embraced since the population surge ofthe industrial revolution. The
living 9th gen have only produced a childe each, and only half of those that
have perished produced a childe. About half of the 10th gen have perished,
leaving about 3300.

11th:
Almost all are modern, most embraced in the twentieth century. Only two out
of three surviving 10th gen have produced childer, and only a third of the
fallen 10th gen made progeny. About 60% of the 11th generation survive, 2000
today.

12th:
Nearly all surviving 12th gen were embraced in the 20th century, most in the
latter half of that era. Only 60% of living 11th gen have embraced, and only
one 30% of those that perished produced get. About two thirds of the 12th
generation have survived, leaving 1100.

13th:
Almost all the 13th generation have been embrace in the latter half of the
20th century. Only half of surviving 12th gen have made get, and only a
fourth of the perished. About 75% of the 13th generation survive, and that
leaves 500.

14th or 15th:
Very few 13th generation vampire have been allowed to breed, and their
childer rarely last long. There are less than a hundred or so such low
generation vampires.

Generational Breakdown Chart:
Generation Number % Total Get Living Get Typical Age Range
3th 13 - 12 4 8000 BC - 6000 BC
4th 50 0.3 8 2.5 6000 BC - 1000 AD

13th 500 3 1/4? 1/8? 1950 AD - Present

Note: Kindred ages tend to be weighted toward the end of their age range
than the beginning, with roughly 10% in the firstquarter of the range, 25%
in the second quarter, 40% in the third quarter and 20% in the last quarter.
About 5% of the kindred of a given generation are outside the given range,
either younger or older.

Demographics by Clan
Brujah: One of the two largest clan, the Brujah make up significant
percentages of the Camarilla, Sabbat and Anarchs. The Camarilla Brujah
number 1100, the 3rd largest Camarilla clan, many (but not all) of whom have
Anarch leanings. The Brujah are also the 3rd largest clan in the Sabbat,
with 300 Brujah antitribu. There are another 100 independents. With their
indiscriminate breeding rates, the Brujah are skewed more strongly toward
the younger generations than most clans.

Ventrue: Equal in number to the Brujah, the Ventrue dominate the Camarilla,
with 1300 members. This is primarily due to the number of Ventrue Princes
there are in the sect, with proprietary breeding rights. The Ventrue have
more broods than anyother clan, leading to a somewhat skewed generational
make-up. There are few (100) in the Sabbat, and about 100 independents.

Toreador: The second largest Camarilla clan, the Toreador number 1200, and
are the second most common Camarilla princes. Again, there are few (100) in
the Sabbat, and few (100) independents. The Toreador have a fairly typical
generational spread.

Caitiff: Not a clan per se, the Caitiff have become quite numerous in both
the Camarilla (800) and the Sabbat (350). There are a fair number of
independents (200) as well. They make up 8% of the total vampiric
population. The Caitiff are almost universally skewed to the younger
generations. Most are 10th to the 13th generation, and none are older than
the 8th generation. A few older "Caitiff" are usually in fact founders of a
new bloodline, though they may identify themselves with their younger kin.

Nosferatu: A middle-sized clan in both the Camarilla (1000) and the Sabbat
(150), the Nosferatu often transcend sect boundaries, being more concerned
with clan unity. This extends to the 100 or so independent Nosferatu as
well. The only Nosferatu exclude from this arrangement are the feared
Nictiku, whom, if they exist, would be more properly numbered as a bloodline
than as part of the clan.

Gangrel: Another mid-sized clan, with decent numbers in the Camarilla (900)
and Sabbat (200), and another 100 independents. Many Camarilla Gangrel are
only nominally part of the sect, spending much of their time in the
wilderness.

Malkavian: The second smallest Camarilla clan (800) is not only marginally
numerous (150) in the Sabbat as well. Their numbers in both sects are kept
small by their instability. The Malkavians also have 100 or so independents.

Assamites: The largest non-Camarilla clan, the Assamites size is due
primarily to their large numbers in the Sabbat (250). Only 100 or so are
members of the Camarilla, and their loyalties probably lies most strongly
with the 600 independent clan members. With their long traditions of
Diablerie, the Assamites were in the past skewed toward the older
generations, but this has become less true since they were cursed by the
Tremere.

Tremere: The smallest (700) Camarilla clan is also the most tightly nit. Few
indeed (50) survive to defect to the Sabbat. Because of the clan's relative
youth, the Tremere are some what skewed toward the older generations. In
fact, most of the 4th and 5th generation Tremere are still active in the
clan. It is rumored that there are a number of "independent" Tremere, but
they hide themselves carefully.

Giovanni: The Giovanni is also a relatively young, tight-nit clan, with most
of its members (700) independent of the Camarilla, though a few (100) have
joined the Sect. None are known to be members of the Sabbat.

Ravnos: Most (600) Ravnos are independent, but a few are members of the
Sabbat and the Camarilla (100 in each).

Setites: Most (600) Setites are independent, though a few (100) have earned
grudging acceptance in the Camarilla. Only a handful (50) have managed to
earn the trust of the Sabbat to the point where they are accepted into that
sect.

Lasombra: Due to the casualties they took in the Sabbat-Camarilla wars, the
Lasombra are one of the smallest clans, though they are the largest clan in
the Sabbat (550). A few (50) antitribu are members of the Camarilla, and
more (100) are purely independent. Their generational make-up is strangely
skewed toward the middle. Many of their elders were slain in the wars, and
most of the younger Lasombra have diabolized their way up the ladder.

Tzimisce: Long hated and feared, the Tzimisce are now the smallest clan,
though they are the second largest (450) in the Sabbat. A few (50) antitribu
are members of the Camarilla, and more (100) are purely independent. Like
the Lasombra, their generations are skewed toward the middle. It is rumored
that an alliance of old Tzimisce exist with different powers, but they are
different bloodline, not numbered with the Tzimisce.

Bloodlines: A sizable percentage of the vampiric population make up a number
of individual bloodlines. There are 700 vampires of specialized bloodlines
in the Camarilla, 200 in the Sabbat, and 1150 independent. There are a few
large and ancient bloodlines with old generation founders, like the Baali
and the Dakini. The members of these lines number several hundred. Most
bloodlines are much smaller, with several dozen members. There are perhaps 3
to 5 "major" bloodlines, and another two dozen or so minor bloodlines. The
major bloodlines may in fact be clans with forgotten founders, but most of
the minor bloodlines have only appeared in the last few centuries.
