Is there a basic intro to wargames ruleset, with simple rules designed for a
new player?

I've been using the front chapter of chainmail, but it's not well written and
makes a lot of assumptions that you understand what's meant to happen. I think
at the time chainmail was more a "rules of the game" rather than a teaching
tool for new people, and at the time most people learnt directly from other
people that had experience playing.

e.g. you don't learn to play cricket by reading the rule book.

Is there a ruleset that's good for beginners, that can do a bit more
hand-holding?

That would be something nice, I also have the issue of not having people
around to teach me properly, although then it often turns out these
things are just a bit too basic. I have gone over to watching YouTube
play reports to get some more information. Also reading Donald
Featherstone's books are really interesting for getting the why of
wargaming.
But I still feel like I am missing a lot of things because I only have
read the rules.

For what it's worth Hordes of the Things I remember as being rather easy
to get into, and Lion Rampant and Dragon Rampant also are quite nice and
a bit more basic.
