Gee, that's kind of chilling. I don't think I like Blizzard being that
co-operative.

FTA:
The sheriff's department of Howard County had been searching for
Alfred Hightower for two years without any luck, even with the help of
U.S. marshals under Operation Falcon. From what Deputy Matt Roberson
could piece together, he had left the country.

But he was still online.

Still, Roberson started asking around, and through a number of sources
he figured out that Hightower, who was wanted on drug charges, was
playing an online game – "some witches and warlocks game," he was
told. Roberson knew what he was hearing.

Some witches and warlocks game? It could have been DDO or Everquest,
even Ultima if anyone still plays that. Even Warhammer might fit this
description. That deputy had to have had more to go on than what was
mentioned in the article.

They were sent a subpoena and most online services, including most if
not all internet providers do state in their TOS that they will give
up your information if given a subpoena asking for that info.
Blizzard is hardly alone in this. Look at the TOS for your internet
provider.

Yeah, a subpoena can get you pretty much anything, from anyone. And
with help of the US Marshalls it could have been (or maybe was) a
Federal subpoena, instead of just state. Probably was to force inter-
state cooperation...
Interesting story though as I live in Indiana, lol.

Gods forbid they respond to a court order. *
