So, just what are the runestones used for?

For whatever you want to use 'em for is the short answer. Long answer... be
creative and find out what they are good for. They are useful as mere
scenery. As part of the story line they were magically endowed and owned by
the elves. The orcs destroyed them and used much of the rock to build their
altars which embue them with bloodlust and eye of kilrog. They can be ID'd
as belonging to specific players, therefore they can be used as lighthouses
providing light around them to guide a player to a specific spot and to
make the PC attack 'em. That's chiefly what I use 'em for, ie. to light up
hostage players that need to be rescued.

They create magic portals for elves from alternate dimensions.
'course, ya hafta have be playin' humans for this to work...
which is why I 'ways play humans on maps w/ runestones,
'n' why I 'ways try to put runestones on maps. The secret
to doin' all this is written right on 'em, but most ppl can't
read runes, 'specially not these runes. The key is that
these ain't even standard wood-elf runes; most ppl only
know Common Runes. The Mirkwood Elves, w/ whom
I hold a distant relationship (didn't I tell y'all? I'm, like, one-
fifth elven; my family's been interracially breedin' for
the last coupl' millenia. Someone said I'm descended
from Arathorn, King of Gondor, but I don't 'lieve 'em. Anyway,
I asked a certain Mirkwood Elf for help on these, 'n' he
told me, right away, that they had been written by Lordaeron
Elves, which makes sense, right? He referred me to someone
else who might know, but that person couldn't read 'em, so I got
passed along, 'n' so on, 'til I found someone who could. I popped
'im off an email w/ a picture of the runestone attached, 'n' he
sent me back this:

"The best I can do is translate these into the basic, common runes
used in the Third Age. My apologies."

The attachement looked somethin' like this
(I ain't sure if it'll turn out; I can send the GIF to anyone who
wants it)
| | | /\ | | | | \ / |
| /| |_/ / \ |___ | | | X |

I wasn't quite sure how to "Speak Tim", so I selected the runestone,
'n' typed in "speak tim". It didn't work. Then, I upgraded to a lvl
2 Castle, 'n' made one of my rangers a hero named Tim, told
'im to enter the runestone, 'n' typed in "speak" while he was
selected. Suddenly, I got this lvl 15 ranger, which really kicked
those BLed ogres asses, ya know? Anyway, that's all I've gotta say.
Try it yourself, 'n' tell me if ya find somethin' else 'bout
runestones.

As it says on many WC2 websites they're for blowing everyone up who
walks over 'em.

I didn't read your question very well. I guess I wasn't fully awake yet.
I read runes.
Runestones on the other hand aren't for anything really. They're for
basically just for decoration. In some missions you have to conquer them
by walking next to them. They are treated as a building of a certain
player (or non-player; but it has a color). They player that owns it can
see 1 square around it. They can be destroyed. That's about it.

Hope this makes up for my mistake
