Where is the best place? A little googling reveals a lot of unhelpful
dreck. I can't see much of value on the official WoW site, but if I'm
missing something please advise. I basically want an idea of where it's
best to invest points for a Tauren hunter.

TIA,

It doesn't matter all that much. Unlike Diablo 2, any point
allocations you make now can be changed later. So go with what seems
interesting, try it out and once you get comfortable with the way WoW
plays, you can go back later and change things if you wish.
The only thing I'd suggest at this stage is to not spread your talents
out between the 3 tree's and instead go straight down one tree as
quickly as you can and make a boar your first pet.

Keep reading and posting here, and while a lot of the conversations
are going to be about high level stuff, that stuff will still help you
learn what's important in maximising a WoW character. : )

This at Almost Gaming is really good. It's easy to
follow if you know what kind of build you want.

So nothing is permanent? I can experiment freely and not screw anything
up? Cool :-) How do you change point allocations later?

Cheers, I'll have a read right now :-) Thanks to everyone so far for the
help.

Just talk to your class trainer and they have an option to allow you
to unlearn your talents. Be aware this costs more gold each time you
do it though; as I remember the amounts are 1g, 5g, 10g, and then
going up by 5 each time until 50g. You can reduce it by not resetting
your talents for a month though, then it'll go down a step, and keep
on going down until 15g, I think.

Googling "wow hunter talent guide" yielded this result from the official WoW
site.

Wowwiki and the hunter wiki were mentioned already.
In the official forums (at least in European site) every class
forum has the Informative and Useful Threads post. For hunters:
http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=304172592&sid=1
There is for example a link to a talent build thread, that includes
some suggestions for a leveling build.

Then the more general site's you might find useful:
-Databases for ingame items, quests, mobs, etc
www.wowhead.com / www.thottbot.com / wow.allakhazam.com
I prefer wowhead myself, but any of those should work ok.

-Addon sites
www.wowace.com, www.curse.com, www.wowinterface.com

What does "proc" mean? As in "The new IAotH is set up to proc a lot
more".

It's basically the chance that an event will occur. "The new IAothH is set
up to occur more often"

Yes, it can get expensive. I think there are a lot of rich players
out there. If you've got a level 70 who's good at farming gold,
then respeccing a low level alternate character is cheap. But
for your first time playing it can be a lot. You don't want to
spend 1g at level 20 to fix a mistake if you've only got 5g total.
Especially since it will never cost 1g again. Wait until level 35+
or so before respeccing

For a hunter, going with beastmaster does not hurt. It's by far
the easiest way to play, and it will be useful at both low and
high levels. Focus on talents that give your pet more damage,
armor, or hit points. And it won't hurt to try and get the
Marksman talents of Lethal Shots, Efficiency, and Go For
The Throat somewhere along the way

WowWiki is good, but unfortunately like all the "where do I
put my talents" guides, it can sometimes focus on what to
do at level 70 than where to spend points from 10-69. But
it's hard to screw up a hunter that's mostly beastmaster.

I second that. My first stop when trying out a new class are the
stickies in the official class forum.
