How is this need before greed actually supposed to work

Ok am I wrong if so please explain. You are not supposed to need if you
have better gear on either spec you are only able to greed or DE if
available right. If so how are single specs able to need on lets say a blue
plate piece when they are wearing 232 and single speced ( oh it is not BOE
either) when it is way lower than the 232 piece

Someone give me a heads up please for if that is so I have seen a few
ninjas in the last few days and I have some ignores to add ;-)

I'd like to extend the question..

In the past we run a dungeon, I gather loot not 'needed' by players, DE and
we all roll for shards - generally the person who got an orb or something
specil (Ony's reins for example ;) doesn't roll and then I distribute abyss
crystal to top roller and dream shards to the others.

Greens now sometimes yield dream shards, but this is the luck of the draw
and aren't counted as the DEing of greens happens later

This means on heroic 5 man runs our usual (past) distribution is - top
roller gets the abyss and everyone else gets a dream shard, greens are
greeded on the run

With the new system it's easier for me as the DEer as I don't have impatient
people waiting at the end for me to shard, distribute, look back thru chat
for rolls then port the group back to Dal (or in the case of guildies, they
hearth and expect me to find them or post them the shards)

however each drop is needed/greeded/sharded on the fly now and I'm seeing
some people getting 3 or 4 shards and others getting none.

how does this work for you the reader, would you be happy with this?

k

I think it was "Matthew" <iamacat...@proudtoserve.com> that wrote
something like...

I've never actually heard that you can't roll need on an item even if
it's ilvl is lower (even much lower) than what you've currently got
equipped. Or if it's for a spec you don't currently have. I haven't
read anything that would suggest a ret/prot pally couldn't need roll
on a piece of healing plate.
They probably/possibly *shouldn't* roll need on it, but that's not the
game's decision.

The new need before greed does only one thing differently than before:

It has a very limited set of rules to forbid needing.

That's it. Other than that, other players can do whatever the heck
they want to do, and your only recourse is talk them out of it, and
get them to trade the item to you.

Good persuasion skills go a long way in the game, and in life.

The limited rule set is effectively....
1. You can only roll need on the highest armor you can wear. Aka,
plate wearers can only roll need on plate armor.
2. Non-mana classes cannot roll need on anything with spell power or
mana regen.

That's pretty much it. Note that lots of things slip between the
cracks (like tanking trinkets).

I would prefer the first way but, as everyone has the same chance to
win, I don't really mind the second way either.

The system does not check your bags to see if you have a "better" item.
Where did you hear that?

Well, on the test realms, you couldn't "need" on an item if you were using a
higher ilvl item.

last night, 4 runs. I got nothing from greens, collected no greens or dusts
from greens - so be it.

I got no shards, my partner got no shards (so that was 2/5 of the party in 4
runs got no roll wins)

Another guildie who ran got 2 shards, so of our guild party of 4 with one
pug and roughly 20 shards in possible drops it seems a pug picked up 18
abyss and dream shards

lucky them!

so one person won 18 rolls of 20 :4 guild rolls of 20 .. 18 times!

I'm sure this is a statistical oddity, but the guildies have decided we're
going back to the need/pass system with DEer rolling greed and booting
anyone who doesnt like it

so we have a solution

...as long as you aren't in a cross-realm group. The DEer can't trade the
shard to someone from another server - that's one of the main reasons the
new system was implemented.

I don't think that has made it into the patch - a resto shammy might
be wearing a high-level dps item with lots of +hit or spell
penetration, or a pvp item, and would need on a lower ilevel resto
item.

Can anyone confirm if this really works? I know this is what the patch notes
said. But my "Need" button was active on various plate items when I ran the
new instances (my highest armour type is mail). Is this a bug? Did I
misunderstand something? Or is the Need-restriction only in place for BoP
items but not for BoE?

Cheers

I think you can consider it a bug. It will *look* like the need
button is active, but if you actually click on it, nothing will
happen. I'm guessing you didn't actually try clicking on it right?
; )

Reg PoS's last boss dropped some cloth pants that would have been an
upgrade for my pally's healing set so I gave clicking the need button
a try. Did nothing. At least, I don't think it did anything, but I
*did* end up winning the greed roll for it. ; )

Ah, I see. I would have expected that it would look "greyed out" like the
disenchant button if no enchanter is in the group.

Certainly not, I didn't want to be labelled as a ninja just to try it out :)

I thought the new system didn't allow you to need on items you can't
wear? Or was this a same-realm group, not assembled via the new system?

This was the new system.....i thought it limited it as well. First the
mage rolled need on an 8agil dagger which screwed the hunter and rogue
and then he rolls need for every blue that dropped until he was
kicked.

I would like to see a running log of kicks tacked onto a characters
profile......or just not let you join the new system dungeons if youve
been kicked more than a few times.

That's how it was on PTR, but doesn't seem to be implemented on live.

Yeah, my low level priest accidentally rolled on leather gear yesterday.
I assumed it was cloth since I could need. I only looked at the stats
and didn't notice I couldn't wear it.

Which may not be true on all the servers/battlegroups, as when I tried
to roll need on some cloth pants for my pally healer, I couldn't. The

I never said it was. However, that is how it was on the test realms, if you
were using a higher ilvl item, you couldn't need on a lower one, because, I
guess in Blizzard's mind, higher ilvl WAS better. Likewise, you couldn't
need on a lower type of armor than your max, which dissappointed many ele
shamans and balance druids, who often found that cloth armor provided better
stats for their specs than the leather or mail drops.
