Yeah, somehow I finally figured out what it meant too. When I first
came accross it on the forums I Googled "ftw" and came away thinking it
meant "f*ck the world." I was left thinking WTF for quite a while
everytime I saw it. For the win makes a lot more sense.
Lol...

Although the context within which most posters use it usually leaves
one scratching one's head, thinking WTF? Seems to be used in a totally
nonsensical and unintelligible way, most of the time.

About half the time that it's used, it's extremely sarcastic. "Something
exceedingly retarded just happened, but it seemed to work." "Priest tank
ftw!" Or, something exceeedingly retarded just happened, and I hate my
life. Murlocs ftw!

Ah. Gotcha. I was looking for a rational usage, when that was not the
case ;-) Goofball-slang... check.

ftw actually means "For The Whored"

FU can also be "fucked-up", specifically when things are "AFU."
"How's it look in there?"
"It's pretty FU"
"AFU?"
"yeah."
"Shall we go in, then?"
"Sure!"

There's a ton of in-game slang, and some that seems to be forum only -
there's also server specific stuff (Dragonblight has several Horde
guilds that are pretty graphic, and their current fave one is "Mangina")
QFT: "Quite F*cking true"
"Leroy Jenkins"...hard to explain this one, I missed it, I was'nt
playiong or reading the forums when it popped up.
PT: Patrol
AOE "Area Of Effect" stumped me for a bit.
DOT: ??? (sometimes it stands for the red dots on a mobs portrait)
KOS stumps people, "Kill On Sight"
There's more, but i'm beat - i leveled to 50 last night so I celebrated
by going on a kick-butt Uldaman run with some cool folk, did all the
quests, killed everything in sight, and I was up 2 hours past my usual
bedtime - work was tough today. :)
> QFT: "Quite F*cking true"
Typically means Quoted For Truth
> "Leroy Jenkins"...hard to explain this one, I missed it, I was'nt

A guy (Leroy) bravely enters the room with critters, aggroes them, the
critters start fearing him and the rest of group, which all turns into more
aggro. Everybody dies. The clip/movie is quite funny and looks good (good
camera work, lol).
> DOT: ??? (sometimes it stands for the red dots on a mobs portrait)
Damage Over Time = does damage on each tick for a period of time, Warlock
curses is a good example, Power Word: Pain of Priest is another.

Or more commonly: "Quoted For Truth".

Go watch: http://www.warcraftmovies.com/movieview.php?id=1666
You will then quickly start bellowing: "LEEEROY JENKINS!" and
muttering: "At least I got chicken...".
No, this is not supposed to make sense until you watch the movie :p
>DOT: ??? (sometimes it stands for the red dots on a mobs portrait)
Damage over Time - any spell that does X damage over Y seconds. Also,
Fireball is a DD (Direct Damage) spell with a weak DoT attached.
You will commonly hear stuff such as: "DoT rogues in PvP because the
periodic damage pulls them out of stealth".
A common variant is HoT (Heal over Time). The same as a DoT, except it
is heal X damage over Y seconds.
Oh, and the red dots on a mob portrait is a rogue (and druid in
catform) thing, and is called combo points.
Some rogue skills generate combo points (max 5), and they are consumed
by finishing moves - eg. Kidney Shot stuns the target one second per
combo point.
