My son answered the phone and said it was a recording from Gamestop, but
he didn't bother to listen to what was actually said. My kids piss me
off routinely.

Anyone know what it would have been about?

MW2 early? :)

Yep. They were given permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 early.

It may have mentioned the midnight release as well. Just saw a MW2
commercial during my Chargers game and they said it's available
Tuesday at 12:01 am. Though no surprise there... of course the most
"hyped game EVER!" is going to get a midnight release. (And here I
thought nothing could out hype Halo 3.)

Yep ,standard , I get the call everytime I pre-order a game from them.

Although I believe 100% of all GameStops are having midnight launches,
so you can pick up your game monday night 11:59 pm

The best pre-recorded message from GS came from my Brutal Legend
reserve. They actually had Jack Black voice the pre-recorded message
and it was quite funny.

I was chatting with a guy on XBL yesterday whose brother works at
Gamestop. He said the security surrounding MW2 is unprecedented.

I think you should contact the GameStop at which you reserved Modern
Warfare 2 because Jonah is somewhat correct. GameStop has given the go
ahead to certain stores in specific regions where independent game
shops broke the street date to break the street date. They did so
after discussing the situation with Activision, who apparently
understood the retailer's need to protect its customer base.

I called this morning and they said no way. :)
Midnight at the earliest.

Kind of sucks that Activision gave the go-ahead for specific regions.
They should have just said screw it and opened the floodgates for everyone.

Thanks for the link to the article. My uncle is really excited about
this release.

On a side note, my cousin and I went to the local Best Buy and
Gamestop in Seekonk, Massachusetts this past weekend and were shocked
how much better the videogame section of Best Buy is now compared to
the Gamestop rIght next door. The gamestop was very empty like they
got rid of everything but the newest games, not to mention there was
this horrible smell in the air that made me want to vomit, come to
think of it it probably was vomit, and the carpeting was nasty
looking.

You couldn't even get a copy of the new GTA Episodes from Liberty City
at the Gamestop without having to ask for it at the counter from the
greasy fat kid because they didn't have any empty boxes on the rack.
Best Buy had plenty of copies right on the shelf so I ended up buying
it there. My cousin and I even laughed our heads off when the greasy
fat kid was boasting to this guy and his wife about how he's on the
final boss of some game that just came out that they were asking about
for their son and how it only took him 3 days to get that far and the
father acted like he was all impressed. I really fought the urge to
just go over to the father and ask (more like tell) him this greasy
fat guy is what his 10 year old son would grow up to be if he wasn't
careful and more responsible as a parent.

After seeing your post I thought it was odd that Bowling chatting with

GameStop permission to sell the title early. "Activision has not given
any retailer permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 prior to the Nov. 10
street date. The company fully supports the Nov.10 street date," a
spokesperson said."

It's unnecessary in 99% of the country although such an action is not
unheard of. I think Activision made the right call in not allowing the
"mom and pop" shops to really benefit from their transgression.

That's an amusing story. I've never had the privilege of seeing a
GameStop shop in such disarray. In fact, GameStop just opened a new
location two blocks from where I work, and it looks very nice. It
helps that there's a pretty cute girl working there, which is not
commonplace in video game retailers.

Interesting...

I wonder if there will be any repercussions against GameStop by
Activision for this, and if there are whether they will be harsh
enough to outweigh GameStop's business need to take this action.

I think if anything Activision will be more likely to punish the
smaller shops since they bring in much less revenue and they're the
ones who started this whole mess in the first place.

Street dates always seem to be broken one way or the other, I would
think Activision would just be glad people are so crazed to get the
game at all.

Sounded to me like their statement was just for statements sake with
no real repercussions or weight behind it.

Now for the issue of no dedicated servers and completely fucking over
the PC community.

Yeah, I don't know what was up with that. Only a few months ago it
was the exact opposite where the Best Buy would only be checked
quickly for any sale prices on the new stuff and then the rest of my
time would be spent in the Gamestop. Even when they moved the dvd
section over to the new Moviestop a couple stores down it didn't look
that decrepit. Makes me wonder if that Gamestop is closing up soon or
something. I felt like I needed to bath myself in Purell after I left.
