Hey guys,
Any one get a chance to play Midway Arcade classics yet? I like the price and
most of the games included on the disc so to me it's something I am really
looking at. Anyone here had teh chance to try it yet?
TIA

Yeah, I got it the other day. Pretty sweet stuff. The bonus features aren't
the greatest but there are some interesting tidbits on there. A couple of
the games I found unplayable because the custom arcade cabinet controls
didn't translate well to the Xbox controller. (Toobin' and Vindicators are
the prime examples so I hope you're not looking at these 2 as the major
reason to buy it. I found them nearly impossible to play.) All of the
translations are dead on, it's just like playing the original. I still love
Robotron, Smash TV, Rampage, Satan's Hollow, and Joust. You can't go wrong
for a measly $20.

It's hard to go wrong at the $19.99 retail price. Just being able
to play Robotron and Smash TV again make it worth it for me.

Most of the other game are good to so so. Some of the games that
required track ball or special controllers are almost unplayable.
Marble Madness, Vindicators and to a lesser extent Toobin, Paperboy
and Rampart are a bit tough to play due to the controlls.

Overall, I'd say it's a good package at fair price.

Considering some of the high scores on the XBox Leaderboard... people have
been racking up the scores (or cheating).

I now know why Joust 2 had such a tiny release. P.U.

The "unplayable" games can usually be brought under control if you tweak
the controller settings and then practice for a while...the analog stick is
*very* sensitive, but with some effort you can learn to use it effectively.
Don't give up.

I agree about "Joust 2" being a disappointment...and I really miss "Moon
Patrol", which made the Dreamcast Midway collection. (Just be glad they
didn't foist "Spy Hunter 2" on us.)

Also, I think I remember being given the option to modify the screen
settings for some of the games, like "Spy Hunter", so that they didn't
appear as "squashed" as they do here.

The historical data is all fun, but I wish they'd made some kind of effort
to gather the printed material for some of the games (like Vindicators,
etc.) which feature lots of interviews, but nothing else. For that matter,
do ANY of the games have any "history" data?

I started to play around with the disc last night. Gauntlet brought back a
lot of memories. The games are perfect replications of the originals. The
disc is worth the small amount of money to me.

I concur. I'm not sure if the appeal is related to age, but I'm having a lot of
fun with this disc. I remember putting quite a bit of my lunch money into
stargate. I sucked so bad I couldn't get past the first few levels. I'm having
my revenge, cheap.

Couldn't Midwy have made the interface a little more professional?

The Intro "Video", the demo clips, the description... it all seems
like a "Quick Let's Release This NOW" hack job instead of a more
professional project.

Come to think of it, I think only the SNES Super Mario All-Stars and
Saturn's Sonic Jam are good examples of a 'complete' retro collection.
(Sonic Mega Collection was good too, but there's no -good- reason why
Sonic CD couldn't have been included... Nintendo's recent Zelda Bonus
disc has arguably the best game, A Link to the Past, removed for
bullshit 'economic' reasons because God-Forbid Nintendo have a
complete pre-GC collection and ruin the sales of a GBA re-release of a
SNES game that has already sold at least 200,000 copies... :P)

At least Midway gave us 'quantity' as well as 'quality', though
there's still some big games missing (Xenophobe and APB are ones that
come to mind)

Namco Museum = Crap conversion of Pacman/Ms Pacman (for cryin' out
loud, why can't the original Pacman/Ms Pacman be ported properly when
MAME has done it for like 5 years now perfectly on much weaker systems
than DC/GC/PS2/XB?), not to mention they could include tons more games
(Super Pacman, Metrocross, Pac-Man Jr, etc...) For crying out loud,
why not just charge $49.99 and have arcade-perfect emulation of all
the games they released on the 5 PSX Namco Arcade discs?)

Activision Anthology = Fairly good, but sort of cheeseball
presentation

Atari Anniversary = Okay, could have been higher quality...

Intellivision Lives! = Haven't tried this yet.

One company that really should go for a retro-collection is SNK...
Imagine 10 years of KOF on 1 game disc... or Metal Slug collection,
etc...

Perhaps the next generation of consoles, with more RAM, will finally
give us some worthy collections. All vertical games should have
'tate' capability, Menus should be slick, with full-screen detailed
adverts, commercials, interviews w/developer, etc.

Just a shame that PC emulatiors are, by and large, still better and
more robust than console ones... there's really no excuse for
companies to treat their IP like a cheap whore, and give out
half-assed retro-collections anymore.

Ranting in a disgruntled fashion is fun!

Whoa, what happened to Moon Patrol!? That was one of the main reasons
I wanted the set! It was always listed in the previews I read, why in
the world would they remove it? Damn I hate these companies
sometimes...

Midway licensed Moon Patrol from Irem Software.

Likewise, Bally/Midway licensed PacMan and Digdug from Namco and
Spacec invaders from Taito in the 80's... perhaps Midway
couldn't/didn't want to spend the money on the license for Moon
Patrol.

The scores should have been based on 'one quarter' play, not one
sitting. You could leave your box on for a week and keep going and
going.

The interface and emulation was done by Digital Eclipse. The same
folks who did Phantasy Star Collection for the Gameboy Advance.

But I've been too busy playing Joust, Robotron, Gauntlet, Smash TV and
Marble Madness to care. ;^)
