There better be a PSP version.
According to their quote "Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can
truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of the Cell and Blu-ray disc".
Certainly puts validity to the claim that they were unhappy trying to
"limit" the current GTA game to the 360 DVD. Guess all those posts about
"Blu-Ray isn't needed for games" should eventually die down.
Really funny situation, though. This version of GTA has exclusive content
for 360, making it a better option...then to follow that news up before the
game is ever released with news that they will be exclusive to PS3 for the
next version, making that the better (only) option. Very wishy-washy.
I doubt it...if they really are targeting PS3 because of blu-ray/cell as
they mention, then why target PSP?
lol. are you fucking stupid. Read the links again.
Interesting that the source of the story is an Xbox publication.
If true, Rockstar is taking a huge gamble considering there's only 3.5
million PS3s in the wild.
Considering it hasn't been done yet, we'll see if Rockstar has the
expertise and resources to take advantage of the cell processor.
What power? All Blu-Ray gives is a bit of extra storage - 25GB single
layer, 50GB dual layer. True, that's more than the 15GB/30GB of the HD
DVD, but frankly there's no actual *need* for the extra space. If they
actually try and go out of their way to fill it, it'll more than likely
end up lowering the quality of the game by quite a bit.

Sorry xbots, it's over, YOU LOSE.
Yes, because they're not likely to sell even a single additional unit
in the 2-3 years it will take for this game to see the light of day...
brilliant.
Yeah, the Xbox 360 has no software (laugh) Go away. 2-3 years from
now? May as well be 20-30 years.
Don't you mean "History repeating itself"?
Sony have announced a cut-down version of the PS3 (smaller HDD, no backward
compatibility) either to try to recoup sales or to reduce losses depending
on who you believe. GTA exclusivity will help, but it's hardly unexpected.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7030164.stm
Or maybe they've come up with technology that actually needs more
storage than DVD provides? It's funny how every console generation
has seen an increase in the size of the medium used to play the games,
but this is the one that Xbots think won't need it. Is it a
coincidence that it just so happens that their beloved Xbox also
decided to stand pat?
Your evaluation that there is no "need" for the extra space is like a
pig commenting on Calculus. You're simply not qualified, Xbot.
What's to read? I quoted from the link the part I was referring to.

Why? There hasn't been PSP versions of any other GTA game. Liberty
City Stories and Vice City Stories were two completely different games
from GTA3 and GTA Vice City. That's why they were independently ported
to the PS2.
They still need to do a San Andreas Stories and a GTA4 Stories before
they can think about this one...

Had you had a brain, you would have actually visited the links provided. The
first one corrects the rumor and specifically says that the news is not true
and that the next GTA is NOT PS3 exclusive. Learn to read... actually..
learn to write while you're at it.
His statement became absolutely irrelevant the moment he mentioned HD
DVD, since XBox360 doesn't use HD DVD for games. And all things being
equal, Sony isn't going to use HD DVD over Blu-Ray, for obvious reasons.
Perhaps, but his point was that neither of them are necessary for
games, which I find to be a funny statement since a) he doesn't know
anything about developing games and b) he doesn't have the slightest
idea what shifts there could be in game design over the next few years
that could dramatically alter what resources are considered to be
acceptable.
But hey, when the biggest Xbot of them all said that 640K would be
enough, I don't expect any Xbot to have an IQ greater than their shoe
size...
"1pstart.com already debunked this. It was published in OXM as a joke.
I'm hoping that this site is keeping with the joke (hoping), because the
quote from Sony about Blu-Ray and CELL processor was taken from a
statment involving the BRAND NEW franchise that R* is creating for the
PS3. Not L.A. Noire or GTA. Twas a joke. GTA has been branded
multi-platform for life. "

Er, no. I'm a PS2/PC/GBA person. I wouldn't willingly own an XBox of
any generation - last time I played, my left hand got cramped after
about a half-hour because of those huge controllers. Not a Microsoft
fan, either.
Nor would I buy a PS3, to be honest, given how they fucked up PS2 & PSX
compatibility on their first try, then dumped the hardware portion of
the emulation and made that emulation work for even fewer games, then
(apparently) announced that they're dumping it entirely...
Oh, and cost, of course. Both platforms are out of my wallet range. :P
But that's not to say I'd go with a Wii (seriously, they should've
stuck with 'Revolution' and get by the supposed problem that it'd be
hard for non-English to deal with by translating the name into various
languages for the major market) - the controller's too icky for my
tastes. I'd probably go with the vast majority of people and buy a DS
were I to get a modern game machine. :)
Given that the 3 continents of San Andreas are each as large as the
entirety of Vice City, at least, they could easily do Los Santos
Stories, San Fierro Stories and Las Venturas Stories, if they felt
there'd be enough profit in 'em. (I'd definitely buy the PS2 versions,
if they were to exist - would much rather have PC versions of the
Stories, though)
Oh? I thought it *COULD* use HD DVD for games (assuming a company
produced one and the user had the HD DVD expansion drive). My comment
still stands, though, on the resulting quality of a game if a developer
deliberately goes out of their way to find content enough to fill a
Blu-Ray disc.
As a gaming media device? They can't. Now they could use Blu-Ray as a
media (i.e. movie) device, like they're doing with the HD-DVD. But they've
already said that the HD-DVD add-on will always be stricly for media. They
have said they could support whatever format wins (i.e. Blu-ray), but again
that is just MEDIA support...they have no intention (or capability) to use
it for games, which I guess is the point we're talking about here.
Did anybody else realize that the quote is just snipped from an
earlier newsbyte that Sony and Rockstar had signed a deal to create a
new exclusive franchise for the Playstation 3? This "breaking news"
has absolutely nothing to do with the Grand Theft Auto series.
Wasn't this reported months ago?
On 10/5/07 6:24 PM, in article
1191626671.5...@19g2000hsx.googlegroups.com,
Actually the GTA series is the biggest series of all time, sold more.
But that was on the PS1 and PS2
Not counting PC sales (can't be bothered to try and find the sales
figures for 'em), and only counting the million+ sellers (ie, no GTA
Advance; same goes down below), the GTA fanchise has sold a bit over
60.1 million units.
The Halo series (not including PC versions) has sold 18.6 million.
The PC versions for Halo & GTA wouldn't add *that* much - probably not
more than another 10-15 million for GTA and 2 or 3 million at most for
Halo & Halo 2.
The Pokemon franchise, on the other hand, has sold more than 154.2
million units, so it leaves both the GTA and Halo series in the dust. :)
'Course, that's only counting video games. Adding in the card game,
DVDs & videos, music CDs and toys would only cause needless humiliation. :P
The ONLY way your ever going to fill up a 25 gig Blu-Ray disc with a game,
is Lots of large Wasteful Textures, and lots of HD Video in the game. If a
Company actually spent so much time to even get 20 gig's of Programming Code
on a Disk, it would takes Years to make the game, they would never be able
to get all them Bugs in the programming out, and they would have to charge 5
times the price in hopes of making their money back. It already costs a
fortune to make a great, Good looking game. Only a few games will ever go
the route on the PS3 to fill up a 25 Gig Blu-Ray Disc. My guess Final
Fantasy for one. Maybe one or two others in the PS3 life span. Most of the
space on the Disc's are going Unused. SONY is forcing all games on Blu-Ray
Disc even though they would fit on DVD.
People on the PS1 didn't seem to have a problem with 2 or more CD's. So
really, what's the problem with 2-3 DVD's for those very few games that need
them? Which by the way are normally Japanese games, because once gain, they
like their VIDEO in games!!! The #1 Reason the PS3 has Blu-Ray is because
SONY wants to FORCE that to be the new HD Format for HD Video's. That's
where the REAL MONEY to be made is!!! Sony pays Royalties for DVD. Sony
Collects Royalties for Blu-Ray. Each Blu-Ray player and movie Sold. The
Movie Video Marketplace is far, far greater the the Gamers on Consoles.
How about all them Great PC Games, that can run at HIGHER Resolutions then
your HDTV have more Features, and yet, they are NOT on a Blu-Ray Disc or HD
DVD Disc! How Come??? Your SONY Suckers.
Blu-Ray, the Anti-Consumer format. A Unfinished format, that anyone with
Stand Alone players will have to buy a NEW one next year when the final
Specs are finally released LATE, once again. A format with DOUBLE the Copy
protection. A Format with Region Encoding. A format more strict burring
BD-J Discs then DVD with Menu's and whatnot. This is what you want?
Blu-Ray would be DEAD as a Movie format without the PS3 as the HD DVD Stand
alone players are out selling the Stand Alone Blu-Ray Players.
Read up on Blu-Ray a little why don't you.

Considering how PS3rdplace sales are dropping every month, but the
time the game is released the only place you'll find one is at the
Smithsonian Institute.
Who could possibly need more than 64K memory in a computer?

It IS bullshit. Sony did not secure the next GTA. They secured their own
franchise from Rockstar the same way Microsoft technically secured Table
Tennis.

Do you have any idea what the phrase "near-term" actually means?
MGS - 2008
Final Fantasy - Maybe 2008 for Japan, 2009 for the U.S.
LBPlanet - 2008
KZ2 - 2008
None of these are near-term. None.
