I don't like sports games, so I don't agree with the two you mentioned.
Here are some that come to mind as the best games of all time (these are in
NO particular order):
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Sega Dreamcast)
Super Mario for the Super Nintendo (Super Nintendo)
Castlevania for the Super Nintendo (Super Nintendo)
All the Castlevania's for the Nintendo (Nintendo)
Resident Evil (Playstation)
Mrs. Pac Man (about every system in the world)
Dark Forces (Any system it was on)
The last Mario on the regular Nintendo (part3?) (Nintendo)
Star Wars (Super Nintendo)
Wave Race (Nintendo 64)
Empire Strikes Back (Super Nintendo)
All the Sonics on the Genesis (Sega Genesis)
All the Contra's on Nintendo (Nintendo)
The Contra on Super Nintendo (Nintendo)
Tetris (Gameboy)
Rayman 2 (Sega Dreamcast)
Super Monkey Ball (Gamecube)
Quake (whatever system)
Quake II (whatever system)
Gauntlet Legends (Sega Dreamcast)
Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
Crazy Taxi (Sega Dreamcast)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Playstation)
Soul Calibur (Sega Dreamcast)
Rogue Leader (Gamecube)
Final Fantasy III (Super Nintendo)
Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)
Just about anything on the Atari 2600 (Atari 2600)
I know this is already more than 10, but there are soooooooooo many more
that I'm forgetting, and I could never limit it down to a top 10 list. If
I had a few weeks, maybe I could come up with a top 100, or something.

Since everyone else is adding PC games, I want to throw "Full Throttle"
into my list. It was short, but it was one of the best times I've ever had
on a PC. The other time was when my now ex-girlfriend was out of town and
bought a video camera and stripped for me, but that's a whole different
story, altogether.
1. Yoshi's Island (I was hooked on it for damn near 3 months looking to find
every little thing) [SNES]
2. Final Fantasy III/VI [SNES]
3. Zelda 64 {N64]
4. Metal Gear Solid [PSX]
5. Chrono Trigger (finding all those damn endings) [SNES]
6. Super Metroid (saving the silly bird at the end) [SNES]
7. EverQuest (PC)
8. NBA 2K1 (DC)
9. NFL 2K1 (I'm more a B-ball fan) [DC]
10. CastleVania IV (Talk about old-school) [SNES]
*Honorable mention* Super Bomberman 2 (if you ever played it with 4 players
at a party, you'd KNOW why it's mentioned) [SNES]
.

Sorry, I just listed my favorite games. In my opinion, there are WAY too
many great games to narrow it to just 10. I agree with Alexander. Most of
those games are classics from classic series, or on their way to being
classic.
Add the original Street Fighter 2 and SSF2:Turbo to that list. Along with
Ghouls n' Ghosts for the SNES.

Quake series - PC/Mac
The mods and the internet play were unbeatable. It was one of the first
game I played online a lot. Mods like Killer Quake Pack and 3Wave CTF
with the grappling hook and were a blast.
Unreal (the original only) - PC/Mac
Because at the time the graphics were unbelievable and the stuff you
read through the universal translator added emotion and depth to the
game. The environments and level design were outstanding.
SimCity 2000 - PC/Mac
I didn't play it much but it was fun and original.
Gran Turismo series - PSX and PS2
In the racing genre it's absolutely unparalleled.
Mario 1 though 3 - NES
It's Mario. Mario 3 was especially fun.
Metal Gear Solid (the original only) - PSX
This shouldn't need explaining.
Silent Hill (the original) - PSX
The game had crappy graphics but it creeped me out like nothing has
before (and that's not limited to just video games either.) The second
wasn't as creepy but is also a great game.
Carmageddon - PC/Mac
It combined a lot of fun gaming concepts - fast cars, hills to fly off
of, pedestrians, other cars to fight, etc. Unfortunately the developers
just reused a lot of levels with different textures (dirt, snow, etc.)
Sonic and Knuckles
The environments were nice and the shields were fun (the magnetic one
that attracted all nearby coins is my favorite.) The ability to play as
Knuckles in other Sonic games was an awesome feature.
Virtua Racing - Genesis
It was actually 3D. If you've played many 2D racing games, you should
understand why that was so great.

classify them as "top ten" yet.

Yeah, nearly every review of both of the above (particularly the NFL2K

these games on their console, and they were some of the best selling games

Let's do it as a countdown...
10. SSX and SSX Tricky. Man, without SSX, the PS2 launch woulda been lame,
and since I stood in line all night to get one...but as it is, SSX took
over my life for about two happy weeks.
9. Tempest. One of the biggest 'adrenaline rush' games in history. So fast,
so precise...remember how the levels changed color when they repeated?
8. Doom. I've played through a lot of FPS games, and this is still the one
I had the most fun with. I used to play this all the time at work...nothin'
beats getting payed to play! (I was working in a candy store at the counter
and business was often slow...)
7. Galaga. I still spend about a dollar a month on this game...if I happen
to see a machine, I'll usually play it. I rememember being about six when
it came out in the arcades...I was excited because I'd been playing
Galaxians and I could tell it was better!
6. Devil May Cry. Maybe the best action/combat game I've ever played. It's
like a beat-em-up, kind of! And I think it has the best graphics I've ever
seen...(of course, I haven't seen DOA3 yet.)
5. Gran Turismo...all versions, because it's the same game every time.
Driving is fun.
4. Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2. Again, it's the same game. The
second game is 'technically' far better, but that doesn't mean it feels as
fresh and exciting. And by the way -- the story in MGS1 is just as flaky,
really! It's a goofy overblown comic-book full of crazy philosophy, what do
you want?
3. Tekken 3. This game claimed so many hours of my life it's not even
funny. I had about five different friends who played the game, and we'd
play it all the time whoever's house we were at. It was pretty
ridiculous...
2. Zelda 64. Gaming goodness. Huge, epic, beautiful.
1. Grand Theft Auto III. Nothing else I've played even comes close to the
richness of this game's world. The level of interactivity and richness
makes almost everything else seem EMPTY. So much to do. I played the hell
out of it -- and now I still enjoy watching other people play, because my
roommates are all starting to go through it.
Enjoy.

Well, it's nice that you have your opinion, but sports games are generally
the best selling titles on any console, so it would seem that most do not
share that opinion.
> You'd know what that was all about, if you ever got out of the house.
I play lots of sports, but its pretty hard to get 22 guys (and a couple of
refs) together (and the equiptment) for a nice game of football, so I enjoy
a nice game of NFL2K1 on occasion ('specially this year since Dallas sucks,
i can play Dallas in game and they still kick ass). I also do not have the
time to go snowboarding, play hockey, or soccer as much as i would like, and
seeing as how nobody has invented that weather controlling machine yet, i do
not get as many oppurtunities to play those sports either, so...
personal attacks do not help your argument much either, but then again
"sports games suck" isn't much of an argument to begin with.

Gyrus (arcade)-- Big-time graphics, big-time addictive gameplay. Just a
heroic astronaut/freedom fighter trying to get home!
Ten Yard Fight (arcade) -- Young'ums don't know about this bad-ass
football/brawler. Real men only for this one!
Mattel Football (Intellivision) -- Oooh, the graphical revolution this one
brought about! Blew me away my first time playing it.
Gorf (Commodore Vic-20) -- You young whipper-snappers *definitely* don't
know real gaming until you've battled the multi-genre minions of this alien
world. And to have this on your very own home machine with its 8KB of RAM!
Talk about a pure gaming rig long before anybody ever heard of Microsoft!
Tempest (Arcade) -- 'Nuff said
Starfox (SNES) -- *Polygon* graphics, dudz! Yes! And what tremendous music
and background textures. A little slowdown at key areas, but what a
fantastic, heroic journey this game was. Probably my all-time favorite game.
I hate I sold my SNES just thinking about it.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES) -- "Turbo" did you hear me, son? Can
you handle the speed? Oh, if you're really bad, here's a little something
else for you: Down-Right-Up-Left-A-B. You can't handle the truth!!
NFL2K2 (DC) -- Superior control, plus the ability to make breakaway runs on
occasion. What more can you ask for?
Resident Evil (PSX) -- The series may be a bit trite today. Sorta like how
after a while, you have to ask why Scooby and Shaggy still get frightened by
ghouls and ghosts even though they've unmasked 100+ such cretins as scheming
criminals in the past. It's not scary anymore. But who will ever forget
encountering that first zombie munching on that corpse? And then he turns
his attention to you...!Whew!
Super Ghouls & Ghosts (SNES) -- Loved this one. Deep gameplay. Tremendous
graphics and sound.
Ms. Pac Man (Arcade) -- I dropped many a quarter into this one. She was my
girl!

Any platform huh? Okay, in no particular order...
1) Midwinter - PC/Amiga
Annoying as hell at times, but I couldnt' put it down..
2) Impossible Mission (C64)
I hated IM2 though...
3) Grand Theft Auto3 (PS2)
My one current PS2 game on the list..
4) Bard's Tale (C64)
Never managed to play Ultima in my childhood, and I'd keep
folders of maps and spells and stuff from the entire BT series.
5) Sim City (in almost any platform)
A case of where I hate the "flood" of Sim-<insert game title>
on the market. Makes me long for the days of Sim City and nothing
else.
6) Civilization (PC)
Who didn't love this game?
7) Pitfall (Atari 2600)
Between this, Donkey Kong, and Yars Revenge, I don't think
I ever put any other cartridges in the 2600 I would borrow.
8) Masters of Orion
Never got to play this one as much I wanted to.
9) Tempest (Arcade/Saturn)
One of my altime favorite arcade style games...
10) Tetris
Classic that will never get old in time. Pandora's Box
was a fun game made by the same people, and probably the
only MS "label" game I truly enjoyed.
11) Alpha Centauri
I'm probably one of the few who loved this game, probably...
12) Madden (except for 2k1)
Can't help it... I'm a football fanatic when it comes to video
games. No good Football game for a platform, I won't buy it.
(One reason I will never buy a Quarterback Club game again...
Too many bad memories from my first purchase)
13) Sonic Racing (Saturn):
This was my game I'd play to get rid of my frustrations. Don't
know why, it just was, until my Saturn quit working. Nothing
spectacular just relaxing.
14) Summer/Winter Olympic games 1&2 (C64+)
It was just fun, at least for me.
15) Front Office Baseball 94 (PC)
I think it was 94 I had.. but basically, a stats driven game
that had it right... (not to mention making up a huge league of
about 60 teams or so, just to do it..)

I thought long and hard about Street Fighter 2, but didn't think it quite
made the grade. I forgot about Ghouls n' Ghosts. I LOVED that game!

You were obviously trying to start an argument, the comment above has no
other purpose. Regardless, you have your opinion and I have mine. Sports
games are just about the only reason i even own a console, as most other
types of games I play on my PC (considering games like SSX and Tony Hawk as
sports games as well).

I had this on the PC, and found that playing it for real on a table top was
much better... but then I am like that.
Lol. So, you like your Xbox better than every Nintendo console ever, eh?
I've had more fun with Halo than I have with any of the Nintendo consoles.
So yep, the list doesn't lie. N64 with Paper Mario comes close. If I own the
Xbox 3 more years and still only like 2 games for it (like the N64) then
I'll change me list.

Yes, still on of my favorites to play on my PC using the 'MAME' emulator.

That game was *great*! I had an Intellivision in my dorm room and me and
some friends would regularly miss class 'cause we'd be so caught up in our
football tournaments. When you think about it, it was probably another 10
years before another football game as good as Mattel's came along (I'm
thinking not until the Sega Genesis and Madden).
10. Zelda II (hey this is like that Rambo game we rented...)
09. Bionic Commando (wow, i just blew up Hitler!)
08. Deadly Towers (hmm, this looks nothing like the cover...)
07. Ninja Gaiden (hey, i just killed that eagle!)
06. Metroid (why is the password so long?)
05. Rygar (what does assail mean?)
04. Kid Niki: Radical Ninja (hey, is this a chinese game?)
03. Metal Gear (the truck have started to move...)
02. Adventures of Lolo (hmm, this game is for grown-ups...)
01. Super Mario Bros 2 (where are all the turtles?)

You need to try something from sony or nintendo!

"blame the canadian, slap the kicksen -- this is agvngc"
But yeah, hey don't be like me :o)
Why? All the good fighting games are on DC and X-Box.
PS2 can't do 2d like the DC. Did you not see the one PSX game
on my list, its an import that you probably never played. As for Nintendo
I feel they have not put out a system worth getting since the SNES when I
was 13.
WTF? Tekken (3 on PSX, Tag and soon-to-be-4 on PS2) is one of, if not
-the-, best fighting games. Unless you mean DC and X-Box only have the
"good" games, and Sony have the better ones. Even if you're not that
fond of Tekken, you have to admit it's a good fighting game.

Aziraphale's eyes opened. His right hand patted his chest. He sat up.
"Paint?" he said.
Crowley nodded.
"What're they playing at?" asked Aziraphale.
"I don't know," said Crowley, "but I think it's called silly buggers."
His tone suggested that he could play, too. And do it better.
Good Omens, Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
I honestly believe Tekken is a weak fighting game. I mastered the game
completely and could do anything (some of my friends liked to play so I just
got good at it as well) and I have found SOOOOOOOOO many better fighting
games where skill comes into play. Tekken takes little skill and I think
skill is one of the most important aspects in a fighter. Dead or Alive,
Virtua Fighter, and even Soul Calibur (though not as much as the others) all
take great skill and make for great fighting games. 2D wise, Street Fighter
is fantastic. To each his own though, I can deffinitely see how you could
enjoy Tekken but I personally don't think it even begins to compete in
quality to some of the above games I've listed.

I'm curious, from a fighter afficionado's POV, what you think of SSBM...

I don't really take Smash Brothers as a serious fighter. It's kind of a
fighter parody (sort of). I like Smash Brothers quite a bit, I rented it
the other day and I've put over 5hrs into thus far (this is w/ also renting
Pikmin and I've got 20 ship parts so far in it and I'm up to day 21). I've
been busy lately if you can't tell :) I love the whole nostalgia factor of
Smash Brothers and the trophies are just fun to get to see what they are
gonna throw at me next. It's a fun game but far from being a serious
fighter, very solid though- I like it! And I don't think I'm a afficionado!
I just like my fighters to have some meat to them and for a skilled player
to be able to beat a newbie (as it should be!).

I care not for Tekken for it peaked with Tekken 2. Tekken 3 was lacking so
Namco made Tekken Tag to try and appease the fans. Also Tekken characters
just don't have enough personally compared to SF or DOA to keep me interested.
Plus Tekken never evolves, compare DOA1 to DOA2 and there is a huge difference,
with DOA3 it has become a serious fighting game with balanced characters and
changes to the roster to make each character a force to be reckoned with, especially
sweet sweet Tina. Give me Capcom vs SNK 2 with Cammy, Athena, Iori, and Terry
among many others on the DC and DOA3 on the X-Box and the PS2 dosen't have
anything that comes close. Well it does have CVS2, but the DC version is superior
due to the DC's better ability to handle 2d and more ram. PS2 can't do anything
close to DOA3. Compare DOA2HC to DOA3 and there is a night and day difference
in the graphics.
SSBM is a fun game, but not a serious fighter imo.
I've played quite a bit of Street Fighter as well. I find (at least with
the people I play with) Street Fighter ends up being a lot of button
mashing, and I end up with a sore thumb from all those quarter circles. A
friend of mine is a big SF fan, and I complained to him one day that it was
all about getting your opponent in the corner and using cheap moves on them.
He said "Oh nah man". So we played a bit, and in most of the games, he
trapped me in the corner and used those same cheap moves on me. I imagine
I'd probably enjoy it more with a stick controller, mind you. I was
considering picking up DOA2 this weekend, but ended up with DMC, Wipeout
Fusion and Soul Reaver 2 instead, and was quite unable to justify getting a
fourth game :-).
Soul Calibur I'd really like to get - I'll have to wait for Soul Calibur 2,
though, and I'm interested in Virtua Fighter 4, although I haven't played
any of its predecessors. Of the fighters I've played, though, Tekken's my
current favourite. As you say, to each his own :-)
