OT: Need suggestions for A/V receiver

It's funny that just last week I was telling my wife as soon as the
thing dies we can finally get something current.
Any suggestions? This is a secondary system, meaning my kickass system
is in the basement, so I don't want to spend much. This one is in the
family room with the PS3.
The room has built-in surround speakers, but I could never use them
because the old Yamaha didn't have a center channel.
Now I can finally get something with a center channel and HDMI to boot.

If you want something cheaper they have a Sony for $199 with promo code
EMCMMMX25 (expires 11/25). It doesn't decode lossless audio but the PS3
does so your covered.

Don't bother with the upscaling on low end AVRs since they're usually no
better than your TVs. Removing Svideo and multichannel analog input is all
the rage this year so you'll have to go higher if you need those.

Again, upconversion is the only gripe, but I don't care since the PS3 is
the hub of the system and it's HDMI.
Not too concerned about connecting a VCR. :)

Denon is my favorite when it comes to receivers. They have been for
years. I use to be a Harman Kardon and Onkyo fan but I have since
switched to Denon for my secondary systems.
What does your main system consist of? I love talking electronics. Do
you have the setup in an accoustically tuned room (sound panel,
absorbers, deflectors, etc..), big screen with projector or large flat
panel, 5.1 or 7.2,3., Receiver or processor/amp setup?

I've got a Denon receiver. It's not particularly "loud" or powerful
sounding overall, but it is pretty clear overall, with fairly good
definition. Nothing I hate more in a stereo than a lack of treble/
dullness. My biggest complaint other than a lack of loudness is the
lack of a multi-band EQ, because I'm an unrepentant sound-tweaker.

Count me as another happy Denon customer. I absulutely love the sound
clarity and overall features of my AVR-4306.

I agree, it pisses me off to no end that most new receivers, even ones in the
$1000+ range have no tape loop any more. Impossile to use an equalizer without
one.

No, nothing like that. I have a Denon AVR3300 and a Mits 65" RPTV that
will probably die any day. The Denon is actually 7.1 capable, which is
pretty good for how old it is, but I only have it connected to 5.1,
Atlantic Tech THX with 15" powered sub that blows the roof off.

I ended up getting the Sony STR-DH800. It sounds incredible. After
applying my rewards coupons, it was $137, shipped. Since my TV is a
Bravia, they link via HDMI. Unfortunately the pre-Slim models of PS3
don't support that feature. Otherwise, you turn on the PS3 and the
receiver and TV both turn on and tune to the right inputs. "Bravia Synch."
