in past Resident Evil games, the hoards of enemies were zombies and
more recently,
white villagers, in RE4. but with RE5 (not due to be released until
2008 or 2009), I think many people will be offended because most of
the enemies appear to be crazed BLACKS in Africa.
now some people will just LOVE this stuff. shooting dozens of black
people in a high profile videogame (not even any of the Grand Theft
Auto games had racist violence like this).... while some people will
throw a fit.
personally, i cannot wait for Resident Evil 5: killing lots of black
people in Africa
(that's not the real subtitle) to come out. just because it looks

For nearly a decade, the popular video game series Resident Evil has
been giving us excuses to shoot the living hell out of pale, pasty,
flesh-eating zombies. Machine guns in hand, players have traditionally
faced these nasty brain munchers in creepy old mansions, or (not-so)
abandoned rural towns. The zombies themselves have been Westerners-
unlucky ex-Americans or Europeans with undead faces as white as the
series is dark.
Until now, that is. Development team Capcom recently released a
trailer for Resident Evil 5, the newest incarnation of the survival
horror game. It doesn't take place in backwoods U.S.A., though. It
seems to take place in Africa.
Though the full details of the storyline aren't public yet, the
trailer makes a few things clear: you play as a white Chris Redfield,
the same all-American boy who has been taking down old-school leg-
draggers for years. And the zombies? You guessed it: the local
villagers. Which means that the hordes of undead you'll be pumping
round after round of ammo into-they're all black.
Resident Evil 5 is already raising questions about racism (White good
guys vs. black bad guys? Is this some kind of race war?), or maybe
questions about Capcom's judgment (Who okayed this for production?).
As one forum commenter wrote, "Is it just me, or is there something
subtly racist about gunning down mobs of angry Africans?"
But the point isn't to smack one more label on mainstream video games
(violent, sexist, racist). The point is that-for this white girl, at
least-the Resident Evil 5 trailer is strangely disturbing.
Of course, it's possible that Capcom is just throwing around novel
combinations willy-nilly here ("I don't know, how about a zombie game
in Africa?"). When it comes to a piece of pop culture like Resident
Evil though, we have to consider the possibility that our interest in
the supernatural is actually mirroring our anxieties about real-life
problems. So, in America - a country still tangling with the legacy of
slavery, racism, and oppression-what does Resident Evil 5 give us to
be anxious about?
First, there are the obvious cultural connections: otherness and race,
blackness and monstrosity-as Public Enemy puts it the "Fear of a Black
Planet." It's Heart of Darkness meets PlayStation.
Plenty of Resident Evil fanboys are standing up for the game by
claiming that Africa is just a setting like any other. After all, why
shouldn't zombies be black? On one level, that's true.
But looking again at the trailer, I see a different message: it's not
just that these zombies are black, but that the uninfected black
villagers are zombie-like too. See all those spooky shots of the
villagers before they get infected? It's as if race itself were a
disease. The white protagonist has to fight back or be infected.
And that's the other issue with setting a zombie movie in Africa. The
whole idea of zombies is based on our fear of contamination. Get
bitten by a zombie, or just drop a tiny bit of undead blood in an open
wound, and you're a goner. Soon you too will carry the disease of the
living dead.
Sounds familiar yet? Yup, we could be talking about the HIV/AIDS
crisis, which has killed 15 million Africans, and infected 25 million
others on the continent. Especially since one of the few sentences
spoken in the Resident Evil 5 trailer is, "Casualties continue to
mount over the long years I have struggled."
Or maybe we're reminded of the "one drop rule," concocted by racists
who feared miscegenation in the era of slavery and Jim Crow to create
a definition of whiteness. Is that what's lurking behind the premise
of this game?

For anyone who's seen the trailer (and oh does it look good) are you
really surprised? The first time I saw it, by time it was over I was
thinking "oh this is going to upset certain groups in support of
African American rights", not because it should upset them, but
because we're talking about some groups that just have their antenna's
up looking for something to complain about. When they attack something
like this their cause isn't about African American rights, it's just
about the sport of attacking anyone or any company that portrays black
people in a bad situation, never mind that in fiction people of all
races and colors are portrayed in bad situations, all the time.
It appears, collectively this group has failed to do their research of
if they have done their research, they are just too incompetent to
understand what's going on with this title and series. Resident Evil
has come to be a series all about location and the local inhabitants
become the enemies. CAPCOM was looking for some place fresh to base
the game and at this point we don't even know how much of the game
takes place at this location.
It's just a silly claim... Hopefully they can turn the sensitivity
wheel down a few notches, to attack something like this makes them not
only look incompetent it makes them look weak. Pick you battles wisely.

I am not racist, and I know the RE series and see no problems w/ the game
trailer.
The game has to take place somewhere. Seems to me that after this event that
the same thing would have happened if they set in Asia, or the Middle East, or
Mexico. This is simply a case of political correctness gone mad.

The least likely is that the game will be released on time as scheduled w/ no
changes. A little more likely is that the game will be abandoned all together.
It seems an easier way to fix the so called problem, would be to simply change

Regardless, after growing up in Detroit, this doesn't surprise me. There
are plenty of people out there who are just looking to make anything into
a racial issue, so they can scream and yell about how they're being
oppressed/enslaved/whatever by "the man".
The unfortunate part of this is, there really ARE legitimate issues that
society needs to address regarding its racist history, but too many Whites
are downright SCARED to even LOOK at a Black person for fear of being
yelled at, accused of being racist, and other verbal abuses. Where do you
think this misconception comes from? From non-issues like this, where all
of a sudden you've got a whole bunch of angry people yelling about how all
White people are still trying to keep Blacks 'in their place'. I don't
know about you, but I don't think ANYONE likes being yelled at.
So instead of trying to actually deal with the real issues, most people
just seek to avoid contact altogether. After all, if your first
impression of a group of people was being yelled at, called racist, and
accused of crimes your great-great-great-great-great-grandfather
supposedly committed, would you think they were being friendly or
something?
The situation reminds me of how many people consider Christians (all
Christians) to be kooky fundamentalists. In both cases, there is a very
small, and unfortunately VERY VOCAL kooky minority that unfortunately
gives the appearance of speaking for the entire group. This isn't the
case in both instances, but again, approaching either kooky miniority
group is likely going to result in you being brutally assaulted verbally.
Both vocal minority groups ALSO feel they are totally incapable of the
sins and wrongdoings they accuse everyone else of having. Which, of
course, is total BS. The kooky fundemental Christians are easily as
intolerant and close-minded as the folks Jesus preached against,
meanwhile, I've yet to meet a more racist person than an angry, raving
militant Black activist. Both groups are so blinded by their fanatical

Somalia right? People in that region just happens to be predominately

The thing that really pisses me off is that it could keep the game out

Some facts: The game's design team are all Japanese. The game idea,
programming and art work were all done in Japan at Capcom's Japanese
offices. The Japanese have no concept of American racism. I doubt the
European black people could give a rats ass either.

the worst parts of Africa and something tells me they are more
concerned about everyday survival than raising a fuss over this
bullshit.

No, not all Black people think that. Heck, when I was in high school, I
had Black classmates who were from far richer families than mine.
However, we all worked hard to get good grades in high school, and then
get into college.

Affirmative Action is a very difficult subject. The original idea behind
it was to attempt to level the playing field a little. For instance, most
colleges practically require that students take AP classes in high
school. Well, what if your high school doesn't offer AP, yet you still
worked really hard? Should you be denied entry to that college?
Again, it's a very difficult subject to tackle as it's deeply entangled in
economic and social backgrounds.
From my personal experience, I can see there is some benefit to it, but
I don't think it should be applied along racial lines.
When I was in high school, there were a lot of scholarship programs
available - but they all required you live in Detroit (which I did) AND
required you to be a minority (which according to the US Gov't, I'm not)
Yet, all the non-minority scholarships required you lived out in one of
the suburbs - which I didn't. At the same time, I was taking the same
classes and earning the same grades as my Black classmates. They got
thousands of dollars in scholarships, I got thousands of dollars in
loans.
I was upset about it at the time, but it really doesn't matter anymore.
If anything, but NOT being handed stuff on a silver platter, I had to
learn to go look for opportunities on my own. I managed to land some
scholarships, including one from my university, and one from the Rosa
Parks association. I also managed to take 3rd place in the NAACP science
fair one year. *shrug* Good science isn't based on the color of the skin
of the person who performed it.
Once we all got into college, however, any benefits they might have had
for being Black, vanished. We were all just students.

Maybe so, but you have to remember, these complaints were based on a
single sentence, or even less, taken out of context from the game.
These are the same people who get upset because the "N" word shows up in
works like Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn. They simply see the word, but don't
understand the larger context of why it's being used, or even the themes
in the book. Yet, if I, a White person, was to decry that 'The
Autobiography Of Malcolm X' is offensive to White people, and should be
banned, you can be sure that I'd be called out as a racist.
Or, let's ban Roots because it too uses the "N" word, and therefore MUST

The point is, these complaints are just someone over-reacting and/or

stigma and are often applied to people they has no relevance to. It's
quite common for idiots in the UK to refer to almost anyone of asian

watching a show on FX called Black/White where there was a a black family
who was made up as white and a the opposite done to a white family. The
white dad who became black refused to acknowledge racism was still prevalent
in america so even though he was experiencing it to a lesser extent, he
didn't really catch on that that's what was happening. Just because someone
doesn't have to ride in the back of the bus doesn't mean that everything is
the same for every person and race has nothing to do with how well or poorly
people are treated in certain circumstances. While I do feel problems are
more based on socioeconomic lines, I don't deny that racism is alive and
well.
3) BET isn't racist. They don't EXCLUDE white people any more than the Food
Network excludes skinny people or WE excludes men. It is a channel with a
demographic. The PROGAMMING is geared toward that demographic. Jenna Van Oy
(Six from Blossom) is on BET. Mariah Carey, Paul Wall, Eminem, Justin
Timberlake, Amy Winehouse, Scott Storch, Tom Cruise, Fergie, Pink, Aly and
AJ........ have all been featured on some BET show recently. Because they
have a talent that appeals to the demographic of the channel. 72% of all
rap music is purchased by non-blacks. Is there a chance that some of them
might prefer to watch BET because there is a greater chance that they will
hear their favorite song? MTV doesn't even really play music any more so I
already know the answer to that.

Oh, I don't know about that... Just because Christianity is now the
dominant religion in the West, it wasn't always that way... There are
plenty of accounts of Christian persecution. However, that's not
necessarily what today's Christian kook is yelling about... And what I
find more disturbing is that some of them are yelling for the exact same
treatment their religious ancestors suffered at the hands of others all
those many 100s of years ago. Heck, even the first American colonies were
founded by people who felt their religious beliefs were being persecuted
back in England.
As for the angry Black activists, sure, there are things to be angry
about. However, at some point you have to decide if you're going to be
part of the solution, or part of the problem. If you've ever tried to
talk someone who's part of one of these groups, all they have is anger.
There's no desire to actually try to ADDRESS anything. All they want to
do is rant and rave and stew in their hatred of inequality - either from
the past, or imagined inequalities of the future. They're not interested
in solving anything, which means they're part of the problem.

Racism doesn't just have to be about skin color, you know. Sure, in the
US, it's all about White vs. Black, but what about earlier on in our
history? Why do you think we have China Towns, and Little Italy's? When
these people first started coming over, THEY were discriminated against.
And over in Europe, the old animosities between the different
nationalities are still there. Do you really think calling the French a
bunch of Frogs is a compliment? I have no idea what the French call the
British in this context but I'm pretty sure it's not nice...

Asia is no different. Japan, Korea, China all still have some remnants of
racist inclination against the other. Many say it's just because of the
war, but history extends back way further than that, and is filled with
examples of countries feeling hatred and of being superior towards their
neighbors.
You don't have to be non-White to hate racism - regardless of which two
sides are involved.
That was what Martin Luther King was talking about in his famous speech -
that not just hatred because of differences in color would not exist
anymore, but that ALL hatred because of ALL differences just wouldn't
exist. People would just be people. Period.

Let's not forget Dahlsim's family at the end of the 2nd edition of Street
Fighter II. Also, the green monster was a mutant from Brazil - a very
heavily mixed country with configurations of people you have to see to
believe. Tell me you don't see the parallels in that. Ken and Ryu are near
equals (of course they cannot make the Japanese guy inferior), but Ryu is
smarter and clear thinking. Ken on the other hand is powerful, but a loose
cannon. Not to mention later on in the series there was DJ, a DANCING
Jamaican fighter. I tried my best to figure out why a guy would be dancing
and playing music while fighting, but since he was black and the Japanese
love to kiss white ass, we all know why. That is why Japanese games have
not been in high demand over the past 6 or so years.

Well you forget that there is no tribe in Africa called negro. Africans

Actually, these perceptions comes from what is already on the inside. Any
reaction to anything else is only an excuse. How could you get angry if
someone is offended? When you get tired of the complaints, it really means
that you do not respect the people to begin with. None of the people who
