AMD: Xbox 720 graphics will look like Avatar
Daniel Landis, Game News Examiner
July 16, 2011 - .

Technology company AMD, who supplied the graphics hardware for the
Xbox 360, claims that the next Xbox will be capable of the level of
graphical detail seen in James Cameron's movie Avatar. Even on PC,
that kind of technology just isn't here yet, but AMD claims the Xbox
720 will launch with it.

While AMD would not confirm they were actually working on the 360's
successor, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, stated
that gamers have a lot to excited about.

Robison also mentioned that the A.I. and physics capabilities of the
next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as
Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row to have a totally individual mentality,
meaning when you shoot a gun or run someone over they don't all just
do the same thing. There will be no more mob mentality, where
everyone just screams and runs away; every NPC will actually be an
individual character.

Whoa.

sounds like nonsense - the makers of avatar with their farm of computers
had to dedicate many hours to each frame being rendered - and yet this
says that a new console can do that in realtime many times a second.
clearly exxageration.

Yeah, and the PS2 was supposed to have "Toy Story" like graphics...

Anyways, what about the games?

So in other words, it'll be pretty but vapid.

Yeah, I remember when Sony said the PS2 would have "Toy Story like
graphics"

Certainly this sort of pronouncement is basically 98% bullshit.

I don't know why they feel it necessary to release this sort of
obviously silly hype. Over-hyping even seems sort of counter-
productive... why not just say nothing and then wow them with the
actual product?

[Ok, in the case of the PS2, maybe I can see -- when they made those
statements the system was still in development, the whole field of
realtime graphics was still evolving very quickly, and the marketing
people / management probably were quite clueless; in the end, the
actual product had rather bad graphics, so hype probably served better
than reality. But I don't think any of those caveats applies to the
forthcoming generation; it seems reasonably likely that it will look
pretty nice -- but predictably so.]
