I believe that the reason the 360 got a boost is that the way the beatles Rock
band game was marketed, they made it out to sound like you needed an XBOX to
play the game.

That nonsense is about as outdated as Halo 3's graphics.

Well you know... there was probably a 3-4 minute period at 4:37 am PST
on a slow Tuesday night where they eked ahead by a few units...

You missed the last few months of data where the PlayStation 3
significantly outsold the Xbox 360 in North America?

I know the PS3 outsold the 360 for some months, but was that enough for
the PS3 to pull ahead of the 360 in terms of total # of consoles sold?

There's 3rd place overall and 3rd place in monthly sales... two
different measures. This thread was obviously about the latter...

PS: The PS3 has been out of 3rd place in Japan for a very long time.

Generally, people in this forum specifically say they're talking about
total number of consoles sold. If someone talks about a console being
in "third place" off hand, they're usually talking about current
sales.

At least that's what I've observed for the most part.

In any case, monthly reporting numbers were referenced with no mention
of totals so the monthly scope is quite obvious unless you're just
trying to be a Microsoft shill. ;-)

It's too bad that Japan is the least important territory in terms of
video game sales...

Right, I was thinking in terms of "total consoles sold" vs. individual
monthly totals.

I know that the PS3 outsold the 360 in terms of monthly sales for a few
months, but it wasn't enough for the PS3 to ever overtake the 360 in terms
of total consoles sold. The PS3 has narrorwed the gap, however.
