You Are an idiot for all the dumb cross-posts, and besides that, you have no
idea whatsoever if PS2 can do Ecco because it hasn't even been attempted. If
you want to talk about raw specs, then PS2 can easily do Ecco, I'm sure of
it.

Nice answer.

Don't you just hate children who can probably barely add 2 and 2 together,
then go on about technical specs of which they nothing about. Then they go
and post a message on a system that is provided to let 'sensible' people
exchange ideas/views.

Oh hang on.... I'm getting a bit nasty ...... sorry ;-)

The PS2 may not be twice as powerful as the DC (as Sony wants you too
believe!), but it does have slightly more power whether you like it or
not.
Of course, this doesn't mean the DC is any less powerful once the PS2 is
released, as it can't take away the current power and potential that our
good 'ol Sega has! :)
Echo could be done on the PS2, and it'd be as good. But it is a Sega
title and something that will only appear on our great console.
It's a superb game, a delight for us to

Just enjoy it and stop yer moaning!

Sega have been the most innovative when it comes to games

I must admit to being all set to buy a US PS2 at launch, however
seeing the current and future games line-up (especially The Bouncer
and GT2000 which everyone was raving about and look frankly shit
compared to stuff like JSR and even the ancient Sega GT) I am
definitely going to be waiting to see what happens.

Spare me your stereotypic waffle, please. I'm repeating myself here but
what the hell. The ballyhoo that has shrouded PlayStation2 has worked
against it in such a way that people have now substantially lowered their
expectations of it. But in the next few months you're going to see some
stuff that will definitely convince you of its true potential.

My friend, there is no supposedly about it. Anyway, you're not the first
to claim this so I tell you what, how about YOU list all of these innovative
games for those of us in a.g.v.s-p2 ?

and some of the alt groups and you will see that i own a
great many consoles.

Chu Chu
Powerstone (went away from conventional 3d fighting games)
Sega bass (the one that started all the clones off)
Crazy taxi (how many other taxi games are there?)
Jet Set Radio
Shenmue

there are others and other people would pick up , i only
list the few i own personally feel have moved gaming on.

I suppose if you want to be pedantic , there is none above.
But, for the genre's they are in they have took gaming on
from the monotony of sequels and rehashes that has so
blighted the playstation.

But , when we see what the PS2 has to offer on launch then
it starts to look a little sad. When i get one (unlike your
blinkerd vision in relation to the DC) the only title which
appeals to me at the moment is GT2000 which being another
sequel doesnt concern me, unless its crap.

Channel 4 is 2 soft lad

dropship what is that?

My thoughts are , that the PS2 is going to be the biggest
selling "dvd player" ever , as that is what most people will
use it for , not as a console. Past software sales have
shown that in Japan only a couple of games are being sold
per console.

Still slate me off for some reason, but I'm kind of glad I
don't have to suffer further EA efforts.

Well, I suppose Powerstone doesn't count because it's Capcom (isn't
Powerstone 2 due for PS2?).
I wouldn't really agree with Sega Bass either (there's been fishing
games around for years).

The rest of the stuff I'd agree with though.

GT2001, NHL2001, Square Baseball, Tekken Tag(i`m a fan, OK), DOA2:Hardcore,
TimeSplitters, Unreal Tournament(split-screen multiplayer, much more fun

Smugglers Run, F1 2001, The Getaway, Extermination, Munch`s Oddysee, The
World Is Not Enough, Oni, The Bouncer and a soccer game, most probably
ISS2001.
And thats only a portion of the games getting a release this year that i

Square Baseball,

Silent Scope

So what are you saying , you havent seen reviews , but there
"ace" by screenshots :o/

I'd be happy personally if there is 2-3 good games on launch
, Gt2000 I will definitely get , but the other don't inspire
me.

If you want an arcade machine , get the DC , if you want a
dvd player with a console attached get a PS2. If you aren't
blinkered get all of em.

I doubt very much they`d miss Christmas for this title. And they have done
the engine, AI, Physics and controls; all they need to do is the cars and
tracks. I think they`ll make it.

As long as the controls are OK it`s hard to screw up baseball as it has set
rules, most games are pretty similar, but have no-where near as amazing
graphics.

I know, i still have the old 3. But TTT has all the characters i know and
love, new moves and stuff, and some ace graphics(i think so anyway),
especially if they put the new FSAA routines in as rumoured. Me and my pals
know the fighting style of the game and it`ll revitalise our weekly
tournaments.

My USB mouse and keyboard for my PC will already work fine on the PS2. And

Looks like PSX!!!? You gotta be kidding.
And RE is essentially a clone of Alone in the Dark, copying a game style is
no bad thing. Besides Extermination is billed as a Panic Action game, more
of a frantic shoot `em up than RE.

Are you comparing it to the DC`s or PS1 library? Whats the point of that

those games live up to their previews then they`ll be worth my cash.

The difference between you and me is although we can both see through
the hype I still know enough about PlayStation2 to be able to distinguish
between fact and the fiction, where as you, evidently, can not.
And as for your extremely lame attempts to convince me that you have

As have many games before it. The basics such as free roaming arenas
and object interaction go as far back as Pit Fighter!, but more recently
both Ergheiz (Namco/Square) and Bushido Blade preceded Powerstone.

> Sega bass (the one that started all the clones off)

Hmm, I have faint recollections of a 3D (Bobb Nudd) fishing game on the
PC. ?...

> Crazy taxi (how many other taxi games are there?)

I nearly just choked on my biscuit! - please tell me you're not serious.
At the end of the day this amounts to nothing more than a basic runabout
clone, but because it features a taxi you class it as innovative ?! What if
Sega were to replace the Taxi with, say, a motorbike (Harley Davidson:
L.A. Riders) or a skateboard (Jet Grind Radio) or perhaps a motor
powered supermarket trolley... would that be innovative too ?
(And I'm the one who is supposedly blinkered!.)

> Jet Set Radio

Another non-linear runabout clone that has you franticly dashing from
one point to another, but this time your a kid on a skateboard tagging
various parts of the city with graffiti. (still hope for Crazy Trolley yet)
Admittedly, there are some original elements to be found within this
game but nothing that can be used against PS2.

Pedantic - oh the irony.
Sequels and rehashes will spawn where ever there is a viable and open
platform. And - shock horror - that includes Dreamcast.

(as someone else said:)
The flux in software sales are predictable. You see, the majority of
buyers pretty much knew what games appealed to them at launch,
which they immediately sought. So what you're seeing now is a dust
settling period. It happens every time.

I can't, but not because there is a lack of promising titles - far from it.
It's just that unless I have hands on experience of these titles I won't
be in a position to recommend them. However, these are just some
that are shaping up to be worthy purchases:

Dark Cloud.
Dropship.
Formula One 2000.
Ferrari F360 Challenge.
GT2000.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
The Getaway.
Resident Evil (as yet unannounced)
Run Like Hell.
Silent Hill 2
Summoner.
Timesplitters.
Unreal Tournament.
Wipeout Fusion.

Now you show me a DC game that I just 'have' to own that is now

available or will be released within the next year. And you can't say

Shenmue.

The initial sequence where the Dropships are descending through the

Bloody amazing isn't it. Apparently it's pushing in the region of 20

Sorry "Ste" but GT2000 does not impress me visually at all. Sega GT
looks loads better. Of course looks matter not a jot but all these mad
Sony devotees raving about it puzzle me slightly - it just doesn`t
look that good.

And after all, it`s just GT with better graphics.

And stuff like The Bouncer - what? The players look like Thunderbirds
puppets and the stupid Matrix-style bits are pointless and gimmicky.

Of course both games could evolve into somethign amazing, and should
do what with the superior PS2 hardware, but WHAT I WAS SAYING is that
there is nothing on PS2 yet that has made me go "wow".

Ok, I have only played Chu Chu, VOOT and Crazy Taxi on this list. I'll agree
that Crazy Taxi is loads of fun. VOOT is fun too. Chu Chu though? I truly think
that this game sucks ass and I just cant see why everyone loves it. Then again

Out of the above I'd only count SW:Starfighter (first proper use of
PS2 vector units I've seen) and Munch's Oddysee (some very complex
herd dynamics being simulated apparently) as truely standout titles.
GT2001 will undoubtably be an excellent racer but even Polyophony have
admitted the real revolution in the series will come in the next
installment.
Square Baseball & Kessen have AFAIK only received middling reviews in
the Japanese press. UT IMO isn't really well suited to any console, on
pc it only comes into its own when you're playing the team games with
a least 6-8 people and without a gaming network in place to support it
I can't see how this could be acheived throught the PS2s USB modem.
Yes 4 player console deathmatches are great, but only if they've been
designed for 4 players. Unless UT PS2 has had a lot of new levels
added the multiplayer won't be great (bots don't make it any more fun
IMO). TimeSplitters may be very good but I can't really comment on it
since I've read little about it other than its a return to Doom style
fps action (I'm sure there's a lot more too it) likewise I've heard
little about the Bouncer. The other games you mention can't really be
described as games which'll make you buy a PS2 since they're all being
released on other machines (I've also got a feeling Oni may be
cancelled for PS2 now that Microsoft owns Bungie).
What this really heightens is the PS2s (and the PS1s) major weak spot:
lack of strong first party support. Sega and Nintendo both have
incredibly strong in house teams (arguably the best in the world)
which work with their respective companies all the way through the
hardware development stages whereas Sony have to rely on Third parties
getting to grips quickly with their new hardware after the development
kits have been made.

I'd be suprised if more than just a few of these titles haven't been
pre-rendered - all the hype and competition around making PS-2 titles is
bound to have left some trying to pass pre-renders off for games. I'm
sure a few of those titles will actually look pretty close to that when
finished, but I bet very few games are up there now.

I will accept them if they have a semblance of truth or validity.
But as I have said before I will contend anything that I deem to be
incorrect flawed or, in your case, just plain stupid.

In future, unless you can substantiate your claims, I wouldn't be so

on Dreamcast and I challenged you to name them.

The simple fact is you do not know what my attitude is with regards to
Dreamcast. You are assuming that because our views as to what is and

Damn! I missed Bits last night. Was it really that good? The video i
downloaded from E3 absolutley SUCKED, the ships were not even textured, so i
am impressed they can make it apparently good so quickly.
Let me know if you see that vid shown last night anywhere on the net.

It was only brief but the most impressive thing was seeing huge amounts
of mountainous landscape with no pop-up or fogging.

It's up here, somewhere.. but the detail is so poor is doesn't compare

I just found a piece of toast from Ste Birmo with the following message
inscribed:

If you really think about it, ALL games are just rip offs of Atari
classics. I mean, driving a car. What's so original about that? And
collecting points. Or killing monsters. Sheesh, where's the originality
these days?

Well, IMO more importantly it is GT with better physics. While the
original GT has more realistic physics than any other console car
simulator (please tell me I'm wrong[1]), it is very rudimentary
compared to the efforts of Papyrus and Geoff Crammond on a PC.

[1] Driving Emotion Type S isn't a car simulator, you drive around in
a hockey puck. That's the way it feels, anyway.

And, if you recollect, something Sega did with the Saturn. I'm not going
to argue against this because it [hype] is something that happens almost
every time and, no doubt, will happen again in the future. However, it is
the extent of this hype and the dumbing down (from people like Steve)
that I am willing to argue about. For every programmer that has
expressed some form of disappointment (Hideo Kojima's words, in
particular, were taken out of context) there is more than enough all to
happy to praise it and set the record straight. You must bear in mind
that many such criticisms [lack of VRAM and AA etc] are simply
unfounded.

And why exactly should I ? After all I never implied PlayStation is
renowned for it's innovate titles, as I already know that innovation /
originality is extremely thin on the ground.

I think the Dreamcast has some games which display original concepts
(an abstract or general idea inferred or derived from specific instances),
but for the most part you could mistake it for a PlayStation or PC.

If Dreamcast sales suddenly went through the roof and it managed
to establish a user base of some 50 million, do you think the industry
would change or that it's owners would be any smarter ?

Putting your persistence to place a wager to one side for the moment,
there are a lot of good titles due to ship come October 26th *, and even
if many of the titles on that list aren't scheduled for release on launch
day a lot of them will be released a few months either side of Christmas.
But I still don't see how you can say what PS2 has to offer on launch
"looks a little sad". There are possibly another ten or even more games
to be added to this list as yet (SCEA and many 3rd party developers
are still playing their cards close to their chest remember).
Now after taking into consideration the above what would be the point.
in a wager ? * http://ps2.ign.com/news/20661.html

I dropped it because it is not true. I openly admit that I do not own
a Dreamcast, however, a close friend of mine does. And no, he does
not work in a shop :)

The same could be true of MGS2, Sonic 2, Jet Grind Radio or any
other title for that matter. There's always that danger, obviously.
But my point was that there are many promising titles in development
for PlayStation2 that the average Dreamcast owner does not know
about.

Yes but history has also shown us that it is nothing out of the ordinary.
Industry analysts have already pointed out the various reasons why sales
figures are fluctuating, of which I gave a sample before.

Well you have to ask , why did TR:TLR fail so miserably on

Is it the kind of person who owns a DC?

Sorry, but I've seen both running side-by-side, and they look pretty
similar (with the key difference being that you can actually BUY Sega
GT). GT2000 will end up being a better looking game, but by a margin
considerably less than the hype would suggest, and will represent an
investment of time and money way beyond what was put into Sega GT.

And as far as driving physics goes, neither game is actually a "sim"
(damage modeling, anyone?). Both have a lot of arcade qualities, with
Sega GT just a touch more toward the arcade end of things (and easier
to drive). The point being: to have fun - and Sega GT is a fun game.

How much fun are you having with GT2000 at the moment?

No. However the cars in SGT have some sort of semblance to the real
thing and don`t look like overpolished snooker balls. SGT looks about
1000 times more realistic than GT2000 does.

The hype was spread through industry magazines such as Edge.
As development was nearing completion, and after hearing numerous
developers heap praise upon Sony's up and coming PlayStation,
Sega claimed its Saturn console was easily capable of producing an
arcade perfect conversion of Daytona USA. They even had everyone
drooling with anticipation after releasing fantastic looking media shots
of the game running on Saturn hardware. But as history shows the
Saturn simply wasn't up to it as the home version of Daytona USA
was, at best, a steaming pile of dung!

I don't know why as I only used Mr Gates as an example of how you
can use someone's product but still be prejudiced.

Because this is not a quiz. I asked it of you to substantiate your
original comments.

The games. Many of them are PC / PlayStation ports and sequels.

Two reasons. First, the Dreamcasts' user base is considerably lower
than that of PlayStation's and so sales were never going to be anything
like comparable. And secondly, the Dreamcast version got slaughtered
by the press for being an uninspired and shoddy conversion of the
PlayStation outing.

Again, you deviate from the topic which is the recent downturn in PS2

it as a DVD player.

!! In a game that shifts at speed (racers) it most certainly frigging does,
the longer gap (distance travelled) between each frame is a lot more
noticable. Have you seen the difference between Gran Tourismo`s 30 and 60hz
modes? Massive.

Again, the over-shinyness has been scaled down a lot in the new demos.
Real-time reflection mapping doesn`t mean the cars are gonna be like
mirrors, but the effect at night, when going next to buildings or on car
windows should be sweet.

Of course Sega GT does look fantasic (though it got a poor review in Edge),
but the GT2000 team said they had barely started on the backgrounds or
details when last shown and had about 15 million more polys/sec to play with
or something. And once they include the new AA routines it should be a real
stunner.

The physics are GT are horrible, and anyone that thinks real cars
drive like that must drive a fucking Ford Taurus. EVERY car in GT
drives like shit, and they all drive the SAME. Im not saying that Sega
GT is going to drive better, but to say that GT has the end-all be-all
of physics is crap, it's made by the JAPANESE, they know SHIT about
cars. If you want to check out a lesson in physics, check out any of
the NFS titles for the PC, it's arcadey, but they drive much closer to
REAL sports cars.

With regards to Gran Turismo 2000 I challenge anyone to download
the following preview footage and not be impressed. The file size is a
bit big (17545K) but it's worth it's most definitely worth it:

http://ps2movies.ign.com/media/e32000/video/gt2k/GT2K-Celicas-done.mov

For me this is a no contest. Gran Turismo 2000 pisses on SegaGT
from a very very tall building.

Just for the record, according to Polyphony Digital the game engine,
when complete, will be capable of throwing around a staggering 20
million polygons per second!

Considering that GT2000 is nothing more than a 1st gen PS2 game, which hardly
uses the PS2 power much at all (having the EE take care of everything hardly
counts as a demonstration of the PS2s FULL power...)...and its still on par
with Segas made-for-DC-3rd-gen-GranT-killer-app...it tells us quite a bit what

Considering the decent sales of GT and GT2 in the US...I think its safe to say
that some people consider GT pretty fun too...

So simply because something comes out before its competition...its a better
game? Ooooooo-k. You must be in thr running to be a Sega exec or something,
getting things out first, no matter what the cost, seems to be a general
philosophy...

Sega GT is a *3rd Generation* title? Spare me your arbitrary
*generation* definitions. Sega GT is pretty much Sega's first attempt
at that kind of game on the DC, and hardly qualifies as being *3rd
Generation*.

I guess Ferrari F355 Challenge is a 5th Generation game - even PS2
fanboys have to be impressed with that title (a couple of professional
drivers even have their own F355 arcade machines that they train on!).

Great. Gran Turisimo IS a fun game.

This is your own, fanboy-esque conclusion. Gran Turisimo 2000 may turn
out to be a great game - no one knows at this point. However, with
Sega GT, Metropolis Street Racer, Tokyo Extreme Racing 2 and Ferrari
F355 Challenge, the Dreamcast is getting a pretty strong racing lineup
this fall as well.

If you have ever tried pissing from a very very tall building, you

Hey, movies are great - I remember all those great Tekken Tag movies.
But you know, I actually played GT2000 at E3. It's a pretty nice game,
but it doesn't exactly *piss* on Sega GT. I don't judge a game until I
actually get to try it.

You know what game DOES *piss* on the competition? Ferrari F355
Challenge. Nothing on any console for the forseeable future can/will
be able to touch the physics, look and "feel" of that game.

There's more to game design than polygons.

Yes whatever, have you played it?

300,000 polygons is what Jullian Gollop/Mythos Games are getting at

Umm... You're confusing which side of the argument I'm on. I am a
big fan of the GT series, and am not impressed with the "gimmicky"
physics models on the DC racers out there (e.g. Tokyo Highway Battle,
Sega GT).

And, graphically, GT2000 is a lot more technically impressive than
Sega GT.

Yes, it does matter. Especially if you want faithful physics. Since
most games run their physics in lock-step with their graphics
rendering, smaller time deltas for their graphics means smaller time
deltas for their physics engine, which in turn lead to more accurate
integration of forces.

Real reflections are "1000 times" more taxing on the console than
faked reflections, and are also that much more convincing when you
watch the games in motion. The gloss on the cars in GT2000 is being
toned down, so gripe about it while you can.

60 or 30 fps doesn't mean a whole lot of jack, you butterball. Of all
the priorities for a racing game, 60 vs. 30 fps is hella low on the
list. 60's nice, but don't be such a dickhole. It's not a big deal.

So what, that video doesn't say much, it's FMV not in game action, it
isn't that hard to make a replay look good. Let's wait for some in game

And I assume you're commenting on Sega's "innovative" titles. Maybe one day
you'll drop the labelling crap, fella, and accept the general
consensus--that Sega is producing some damn innovative titles at this time.
If you're not impressed by Sega's E3 lineup, strictly from a gamer's
standpoint, then don't even bother continuing to argue your "intelligence".
You will never play these Dreamcast games simply because you have no faith
in Sega. The whole damn town can be having fun with their Dreamcasts, or
X-Boxes or Dolpihins, or Super NEO GEO 512s, you wouldn't touch 'em with a
ten-foot pole because it's not PS2. It's unfortunate for you that you can't
see past your bias and realize this.

> I think the Dreamcast has some games which display original concepts

This is utterly the most ridiculous statement I've heard about Dreamcast,
especially from someone who already admitted to not owning one. It displays
a total concept of Sony bias. It reveals a complete refusal to acknowledge
some of the brilliance coming from Yu Suzuki, Yuki Naja, and Sega as a
whole. After reading all your posts, I've officially labelled you as a
hater--you don't care about games, really. You wouldn't have a good long
sit-down with Dreamcast simply on principle alone, and that's not what
really enjoying video games is all about--you'd rather talk specs all day.
That attitude is crap, plain and simple.

I have a bit of advice for you--put yourself out of your misery, and buy all
of the goddamn systems. That "running from the mouth about how PS2 is so
much better than anything else" disease will be cured quickly.

No, but I bet that you still wouldn't buy one. It's pretty much a
PlayStation or a PC, after all. Sheesh...

Again, you're wrong about what you label "the average Dreamcast owner". Some
of us actually look forward to what both has to offer. Some of us choose not
to take sides on the issue and just enjoy the games. I would also risk it to
say that many Dreamcast owners are what you call "hardcore", and bought the
system because it has some pretty fun games. It's a rather simple concept,
completely "poly/sec" free. It's a refreshing way of thinking--you should
really try it sometime.

Huh? Where did you get this information? I find it utterly
unbelievable that Digital Polyphony are unable to take advantage of
the vector units. After all, the release of the game is still far
off, they've had plenty of time to get to grips with the hardware.

And these!

MDK2
Ecco The Dolphin DOTF (what a mouthful)
Rayman 2
Sega GT
Soul Calibur
And I know it's not a popular decision but VF3tb it has a great fighting

I must be missing something here. If the games you listed are justification
enough to buy a new system, then how is you don't own a Dreamcast yet? The
Dreamcast has a better lineup than this already available, with much more
coming down the road. And there will be at least twice as many comparable A
titles released for the Dreamcast than you listed below, before the PS2
comes out. Not to mention imports of games like Sega GT and the amazing
Tokyo Extreme Racer 2 (English name) that are available now and easily
playable on the Dreamcast.

It's not the fact that you want a PS2 that surprises me, it's that you would
pass on a $149 (or less) console right now with such a lineup of games
already available and more coming soon. And at that price, you can get a
bunch of games instead of just a new piece of hardware. Isn't that the
point?

In no way whatsoever does it matter. Gran Turismo on the PS goes at,
what, 15fps? And does something like Motorhead that runs at 50fps make
a better game?

Framerate affects smoothness, not speed, so IT DOESN`T MATTER.

I would like to reiterate that I was commenting on the game as it
stands at the moment - it may turn out to be the most gorgeous racer
of all time.

In fact, it will be a disaster if it doesn`t.

Err, surely you've got your figures wrong? 300k is pathetic. If you're
touting that around as a real-life PS2 benchmark then you're in for a shock.
That figure sounds like what you'd get on your first day or two of PS2
programming, after which it should ramp up dramatically.

No offence Mythos :-)

I thought it had to be 300k per scene, which is 18m polys/sec if they
manage 60 fps.

Motorhead gives a much better sense of speed, but that's probably not
related to the frame rate. The important thing about frame rate is
better and more accurate response from player input.

> Framerate affects smoothness, not speed, so IT DOESN`T MATTER.

The number of updates in the physics engine is _very_ important for
realism. Grand Prix Legends (the most realistic racing game I know)
runs its physics model at 288 fps, but the graphics are only updated
at 36 fps at most.

In Gran Turismo the physics are updated exactly as often as the
graphics, so when the frame rate is doubled, the physics get more
accurate as well.

Due to not being the in-game action, the replays can look better, there
is a noticeable difference in all the GT games between replay and in-game.
Anyway, that video doesn't impress me that much. It looks only a little
better than the best (graphically) racing game from the pre-DC era, World
Driver Championship on the N64. And it definitely doesn't piss on Sega GT.
Face it, the PSX2 isn't as good for graphics as you imagine. Just like
PSX1.
